Wow. I recently stumbled on your channel and am really appreciating your wisdom. I’m someone who usually writes a pretty great first draft (which sometimes serves as a finished piece) but admittedly I’ve hesitated to edit and lose any of the feeling. Watching you make changes in real time is liberating. And I see how you are actually enhancing the depth and original meaning and emotions. Well done!

I know this is an old video, but I implemented some of your tips for my poetry and this is one I wrote. It's called Some Other Time. [people in the comment section, tell me what you think!] I'll write a poem some other time the feeling is too fresh like a cut from a lemon knife a burn from sun-stung metal the pain of a tooth jerked out of tender gums -- too fresh -- entirely. wait until it is a dull memory old books on the back shelf of a cent store in peace, photos from the war...

Hannah's amazing at what she does. We're lucky that she uploads these videos for free. Unfortunately I never got the hang of writing poetry. Is it just harder to write poetry in English and German (I'm bilingual) than in other languages, or am I just not poetic at all?

I like poetry to be the spice in my prose, I feel that is the correct ratio ! Also, I love the real-time Editing videos. They feel like they're keeping alive the feeling I got from "Genius 2016", about Max Perkins (Editor of Genius, Thomas Wolfe played by Jude Law). That was the first time I felt an understanding for the technical brilliance and artistry of an Editor ! So... thanks for that !

A second thought: Interesting interpretation at 6:08 but I feel it changes the original thought too much. You were aiming to make it more succinct yet clear and effective, yet I think you should have kept 'way' and rather removed the whole prepositional phrase 'in the dark'. The way knew her back, not the dark. The full repetition with the earlier portion is indeed unnecessary, but I feel like 'way' better evokes the prior 'way in the dark' than 'dark' evokes 'way in the dark'. The way can be windy, treacherous, whatever, but it's so familiar even if it's dark its features are all known. Dark is always dark (featureless?), but ways (terrain?) in the dark can change/variegate, or the way it is traveled on can change. That way with all its features is what knows its traveler back. (This is a nice poem, by the way!)
@JoshuaMNielsen
@JoshuaMNielsen 3 жыл бұрын
Arguing both sides here, perhaps you could argue for a creative metonymy of providing 'dark' for 'way in the dark'. But what I noted in my initial comment above seems clearer, else the reader likely will start dwelling on the essence of dark(ness) and not essence of the way. If that's your intent as a writer though, then go for it!
