TL:DW version 1. Your willpower is limited. Focus on one goal at a time. 2. Self-acceptance is better than guilt. Don't be so hard on yourself the next time you fail. 3. Will power is contagious. Find a friend with the same goal. 4. Don't imagine yourself achieving a goal. It makes you feel rewarded when you shouldn't.

+Bite Size Psych if youre talking about willpower then #2 is highly misguiding. it just supplants one weakness with another. thats like skipping gym and instead painting the sixpack on. every time i mess up, i make a point about feeling guilty. and sure enough, soon after that i feel the urge to remedy this. with your "trick", i would just accept my failure because it wont tempt me to look for a remedy in the wrong places. instead, what i do is i look for a remedy in the "right places". meaning, i do something that furthers my goal(s), which then remedies my guilt. again, its not wrong per se, its just making a shortcut where you shouldnt make shortcuts. willpower doesnt increase by avoiding weakness.
@augustas381
@augustas381 9 жыл бұрын
+Gregorius LaFayette There's often a confusion between what the remedy is to guilt in your sub-conscious, to you it may have been clear that exercising and re-trying is the way to remedy the failure but in an example where you are talking about eating less sugary foods, your body may believe that the sugary sweet is actually better for you, which in a way it is because it has more energy, but you know the problems. The point being made here is that if you feel guilty you will try to remedy the guilt, and sometimes the remedies your body is thinking of such as resting to feel better, eating sugar to satisfy your energy needs or whatever are more influenced. However I think it is best if you become proud with the progress you did, this is not the same as guilt as is a pure form of communication to your sub-conscious telling it you did something good, which is actually good and your mind will be more inclined to do it meaning you need less willpower and it will be a more automatic thing like a negative remedy would be. He doesn't say willpower doesn't increase by avoiding weakness, but to clarify, feeling guilt over a mistake you have made may inform your sub-conscious that the entire process, which you may not like so much like avoiding eating sugary sweats or doing more exercise, not just the mistake, is bad and you will require more willpower to come over it.

Jesus Chow generally speaking youre right. but the point is to make setbacks and challenges a good thing. and you can only do that by repeatedly overcoming them. meaning: every time you fail, you try harder until you succeed, thus associating challenge with success in your mind. once you have achieved that. you wont be afraid of failing or making mistakes, you will embrace it, because in your mind it will represent a chance for success - just like candy represents "feeling good".

There are two thing I would say about this video. First is about point number one that you mentioned. Willpower is limited but that limit is so freaking high that basically no one is operating in that range, so acting like you have infinite willpower is definitely the better way to go! The way to best conceptualize it is that you willpower is stored in lots of different tanks and they get progressively harder to open. People have poor skills at dealing with the gaps between opening a new tank and thus get an illusion that their willpower is much more limited than they believe. Secondly you're 4th reason is correct in a sense but not explained correctly. Visualization is extremely powerful and effective... The problem is that most people are super lazy and just want the reward and not to do the work. So they only visualize having achieved a goal. Like checking a task off a list you're done so you don't have to do anything more on that to make it happen. This is the problem, when people visualize hedonic based goal completion. When this happens you just visual yourself as done and so you don't visualize yourself crushing challenges, working hard and loving the hard work you need to do to accomplish the goals. A fat person just visualizes the 6 pack. They don't visualize loving the process of exercising, strengthening their abs, pushing barriers and limits on their abilities and making it into a life style. No they just see abs and probably hot chicks liking those abs. You have to visualize yourself loving the whole experience, because the entirety of a journey is not just the destination, it's all the steps and challenges along the way (more so than the end point).

Yeah, and you don't have to re-read them or anything like that. Since you have the background music playing you could just list your 4 points and give the viewer enough time to read them as the video ends. Personally I would be satisfied with this and it wouldn't require that much effort to add in text without a voice-over.

+scorpiss9 need 4 tips to stop fantasizing! jk Try imagining the opposite scenario. If you're 25 and trying to lose weight, imagine yourself 35 without having lost weight (or worst, gained weight). Imagine a negative outcome so you get a strong urge to avoid it. That's how religion works. Imagining hell makes people obedient servants.

+hasen195 no, because that contradicts the rule of not being too hard on yourself. What you have to do is come to the realization that your not at the goal yet and take each step at a time. Enjoy the journey, but dont be too comfortable taking it.

+scorpiss9 Be very objective and realistic. Try to lower your heart rate by taking a deep breath before you begin to think or speak. Speak softly and slowly so you are not driven by impulse. Sticking to the immediate and present situation also helps as fantasy normally consists of looking into a distant future away from the immediate problem or situation. Hope this helps.

You have develop a distaste for it. Catch youself every time and remind yourself how dangerous it can be. Repetition works. It's the hardest thing in the world to change a physical habbit but changing the way we think just takes a bit of persistence.

Its situation based. Quitting the smokes and exercising daily goes hand in hand. Because both has to do with a healthier and better future. When you are exercising you feel better and healthier, therefore its more likely you possess the will power to quit smoking at the same time.

Yeah, thats the theory. But science, by it's very nature, is counter intuitive. It goes against common sence. Because thousand of studies have shown that when we try to break too many habbits at once, we achieve nothing. Even the most responsible of us. The gurus tell us we can do it. Science says "don't bite off more then you can chew".

The more important take-away for limited willpower is to try to steer clear of temptations - situations where you need to expend willpower. So instead of using willpower to refrain from eating the pringles/choc cake on the kitchen counter, just don't bring junk foods into your house in the first place.

Out of all of the b.s, self help books. It's the most b.s. People want everything to be so easy. So it's no wonder that the book that says all you have to do is think, is a best seller. I wouldn't be surprised if it outsells the bible. Meanwhile useful, practical books like Greene's Mastery, that not once uses the term "easy step" are barley on people's radar and even get some bad reviews.

Actually it requires thinking. So cat videos and vines will trump it every time. People are getting so lazy they'd rather watch someone else play a video game because picking up a controller and using their brain has become too much like a job. The bright side (for us) is that the people willing to learn something new will always have a decided advantage of the 99% who simply are not.

Strangely, and this might only work for a nut like me with few material positions, but a $275 a month 12x14 efficiency living space with a shared bathroom is key for working out and being social. Simply put, your gym, restaurants, and libraries become your home, and you'd rather be out and social than in your own home which is now just your place to sleep. I sold all my books and have all them in my kindle, tons of space saved. Movies burned on external hard drive plus Netflix saves more space. I've lost a ton of weight and feel like, "My House" is the gym and library. Feels like a mansion. I can save a ton for loan pay offs and vacation. The women tend to feel more comfortable at their place anyways.

For hares the second point is very helpful. Tortoises may plod on and get there first, but hares can accept their temporary breaks, from the road, without guilt and with self- forgiveness and laughter. The road is still there. Rather than winning the race the story talked about, personal achievement is what counts in the end, I had some problem with the fourth point as I always understood that visualization strengthened the goal you were trying to achieve. The examples given where it has failed, could, I suspect, be counterbalanced with examples of it succeeding. The examples were ones of easy fantasy. Fantasy is passive and comes and goes as easily,as coming and going to MacDonald's. Imagination, on the other hand is an active process and takes work. It, thus, is more likely to motivate. Nevertheless, without action, imagination. affirmations and what have you, are just self-delusions. In cases of long term projects it sometimes helps to break them down into manageable chunks. Take one bite at a time, as the advice says, when eating an elephant.

I recall something about how certain types of imagery -- visualizing yourself doing something -- could actually train your brain much the same as doing the action. So for example athletes who spent time thinking about their upcoming exercise or competition, seeing themselves practicing moves, or dreaming about moves, would have the edge over those who didn't. But, I'm not sure where I heard that or that it got stored correctly in my brain. Also, it's not impossible for both to be correct. Perhaps visualization is only a useful trick for those who already have their willpower well in hand?

Imagining that you already achieved a goal is good ONLY when you want to get rid off a bad habit. If you suffer from addiction, identifying yourself as someone who is not an addict is certainly going to help. This kind of approach should not be used for initiating. However, it's great for PREVENTING action.

I'm totally in love with your videos :) I kinda had a question although I'm not sure you could answer it. Since visualizing tends to have a reverse effect on things, what would happen if someone visualized the foods they're not supposed to eat or something like that and just let their thoughts about it run rampant for a bit. Would that help them get over their urge to eat that thing they just fantasized about? Just a thought! Anyway I hope you continue with you're awesome videos I'm pretty sure I've already watched them all :)

tess noodle Hey there. I haven't looked at the research on that. And thanks for the kind words :)

If you know about the Marshmallow study, children who were encouraged to think about the Marshmallow as a " white Cloud" rather than a " sweet treat" were more likely to engage in self-control. Avoiding and distracting oneself from the temptation of thinking about desired and harmful things by finding alternative habits or changing one's perception of it, particularly regarding food, could be more helpful. For example, instead of thinking of the donuts as a delicious treat, consider them fat in your stomach and weight on your scale! That works for me!

I love the video, but i can't get my head around point 4. I have read quite a few books on Self Help and Achieving your goals, and they all tell you to spend around 15-20 mins a day visualising yourself having reached your goal. So my question is, should i stop the visualisation? And why is there contradiction between point 4 and seld help books?
@MonteNegroMCMLXXXV
@MonteNegroMCMLXXXV 8 жыл бұрын
Definitive statements in such matters risk confirmation bias - they are highly abstract, complex, and difficult to turn into a science. In the visualisation aspect: its like a double edged sword, where visualisation will allow your unconscious mind to acknowledge a potential reality to strive towards, yet biologically, it can drain your motivation towards achieving it. It will depend on you to moderate the amount of visualisation to balance both factors.

That's simply. We live in a culture of ease. Everything's "ten easy steps" this and "the one secret that no one else knows" that. On the flip side are the people, backed by science and research, who tell you that it takes 10,000 hours of focused practice (i.e 10 years) to get good at anything and all the myths about how the Beethovens and De Vincis were born "talented", skip over the gruelling hours of their apprenticeship. The rule to live by is this: "easy" doesn't enter into adult life, and anyone who tells you it is is going to follow up by asking you to reach in your wallet. So don't even be polite. If someone gives you advise and in any of it uses the "E" word. Just tell them to fuck off!

Will power is limited... Every asocial person in the world is painfully aware of this. Being asocial is NOT the same as anti-social or being shy. Asociality means that a person will burn a lot of mental energy much after when interacting with other people. This means that after a social event, an asocial person is left feeling drained, and tired. You just don't have the energy to keep dealing with people anymore, even if it's at a fun event. Socializing will mentally drain asocial people, and hence, will want to retreat away from people for a good while in order to re-charge their mental batteries. Solitude is soothing to asocial people, feeling lonely is extremely rare for those of us who are asocial because being alone is both soothing and regenerative.

I disagree with number 4. Visualization must be coupled with like action..

Except.......that if you believe that visualization actually brings things into tangible form; then you SHOULD visualize. I visualize working out. I see it, and my nerves and muscles actually get benefit; and because I see myself already doing it; my THRESHOLD for starting the actual activity is a lot lower. Another thing, Willpower can be developed over time. Those who rely upon a new year's resolution to FINALLY accomplish something; haven't learned the art of gradual change. I taught myself how to adopt small changes, stick with them; and use those to build other changes. But when I need a MASSIVE AMOUNT OF WILLPOWER; I stop for a moment and imagine the future. I imagine what will happen if I continue doing whatever it is that isn't giving me the result that I want; and then I visualize what doing the IDEAL thing, will result in. The science is cool; but I don't agree with everything he said. I'm not a paid scientist; but I've spent my life, addressing these exact issues in my own life; and I've used my creativity in order to over come a lot of the so-called 'science'. I watch this stuff in order to get a different perspective; but in the end, I call the shots in my own life; and I've learned to trust my own judgment. I think the worst thing you can do, is to teach a person that they can't trust their own judgement.

Oh hey! If you are really having problems with procrastination and lack of willpower I have a cure for you. First of all apply procrastination bulldozer method. Secondly, start doing tasks that take less than 15 minutes right away. These two things alone completely cured my procrastination after 12 years of trying everything I could.

does it mean that I hv to choose between my workout and studies to save my will power and to get success ...??''
@rotmgdabeatz

I don't agree completely with the video. Let's put it this way. The more 'fuel' (effort, willpower) you use to overcome obstacles you meet through your workout or school, the better the bigger your 'fuel tank' on the next refill is going to be. Basically, your willpower is not unlimited, but you train your willpower the more you use it. You basically trade guilt and dissapointment for strength and accomplishment. It's like a muscle. Not training your willpower at all is bad since you can't accomplish anything if you don't make sacrifices. But OVERTRAINING can sometimes be even worse.
