Keep on pushing sis. What made me back out of UX design is how I feel like you have to plead your case / design choices. You have to literally educate them on UX design to prove why you've chosen the layout choice. That's too frustrating for me. You never know being a UX design teacher as part of your job.

Suuuper good video Stephanie!! I've been designing now for 5+ years and I can 100% agree with you. Regarding business vs user needs...I think this is kinda our role, right? We're trying to bring both needs into whatever product we're designing. Sometimes I get a business request for a feature or whatever, my job is to investigate why we need that feature and why it could be useful for users. Then, we make the best we can for the end user (while giving the business what they need). It's frustrating at times, but also I think detaching yourself from the product helps a bit. Even if it's mostly you designing it (and let's be honest, we do most of the heavy thinking work), if you consider it a full team effort, you can be a bit more objective.

Thank you for the content! I'm making a decision to start the ux/ui bootcamp through Springboard this May. I come from a industrial design and mechanical engineering technology background so I'm hoping it won't be too challenging to transition. It definitely seems disappointing to try and defend your user's needs just to get shut down. When the product/service isn't as successful, I can foresee people pointing figures at the designers. Again you're then put into the position to defend your case and your innocence. Learning how to set proper boundaries and protect yourself is important when you often become a scapegoat for issues. Company politics sucks, but it's a reality we live in. Anyways, thank you for sharing your experiences!!

I did a contract job (my first UX Design role), and as basically the UX "expert" at that. It was in a venture organization in a company, and so it was like a start-up. I experienced all the things you said. It was hard to balance on top of learning to do UX also. I was basically learning as I was going haha.

😊Great video! How do you feel about presentation. I think that’s the only think I’m a little nervous about. Like how often do you have to do them. And is it like a long drawn out presentation. 😩 I’m pretty introverted but can hype myself up to just get through it. Lol
@hellostephaniem
@hellostephaniem Жыл бұрын
In my experience, they have been very casual and not very long. All of my presentations have been me showing my designs, so I practice what I want to say before hand. I'm usually presenting once a week, to my product manager, or design team. I don't look at it like a "presentation" more of just showing my work. From one introvert to another, you got this girl!

I've seen a lot of recent layoffs with UX/Product Designers lately. Since Design/Creative is more subjective, do you ever get scared of job security? Like, what if one month they decide, hmm we want someone who can totally change our interface differently, let's choose this person from singapore/india who are way cheaper Saying this from my own fear lol
@hellostephaniem
@hellostephaniem Жыл бұрын
Hey! When it comes to layoffs, in my opinion, it's due to trying to save costs & cut back wherever they can. They would rarely change their whole interface because that would alienate their existing customers. They could get cheap labor but contractors do have their limitations, especially when understanding the American customer. Hope this helps!

Thank you for sharing! Love your content! I'm brand new to the field, and have been looking into two programs to land a UX Designer role, an associates degree in Graphic and Interactive Design or a 2nd Masters in Human Centered Design. Do you recommend a graduate degree in this field? I've been told that the industry is seeking a lot more undergrad/certificate based education than a graduate degree. Would you agree?
@hellostephaniem
@hellostephaniem 10 ай бұрын
100% agree! Undergrad and certificates are typically the level of education UX jobs require so I won't go down the grad degree route myself.
