Excellent presentation gents. Employeers overlook good ppl, micromanage them and see them as tools not human beings

I can give you an advice. Make sure the compensation in the team reflects the value each brings to the team. Not that you must go on a spending spree, but that a good employee earns a bit more then an average irresponsible of tenure.

My issue has been, as the most experienced in my department, my manager has asked me my opinion on several things. The issue is after multiple years of this he usually ends up doing exactly what he wanted to do anyways and not taken my advice at all. Why should I continue to think of solutions to problems just to see non of my ideas being used.

Almost like a form of bullying that isnt it ? Your boss is communicating with you that your opinion doesnt matter and hes more powerful than you, he will make the decisions not you. You ever considered looking for another job just to see his face when you tell him your working your notice ?

I agree with the other comment, it's a passive aggressive way of putting you in your place. He may feel threatened by you and is trying to show you (indirectly) that he's the boss and he calls the shots. That is a very slimy way of handling things and you should definitely find something else, these kinds of people will cause more problems for you instead of helping you.

Sorry, as an objectively high performing employee on my team who is actively looking for another job, I'm happy to do more, but only if asked nicely and presented as an option. If my boss came to me and told me to figure out a solution to a problem that is outside my job description, I'd probably think, "WTF dude, this is not my job and not my area of expertise. Also, you didn't even ask nicely or presented it as an option". You can probably already guess that is what happened to me. They gave me more responsibility alright: about a job's worth of responsibility so now I'm doing the work of 1.5 - 2 people and I was forced to do it, was not asked nicely, and no extra compensation was even offered.

The other staff will laugh at you behind your back as well, because their worse than you, get paid the same as you, for half the work your doing. They also have less stress in their life because their doing half the work you are, which can also make them feel smug when they talk to you. Doing double the amount of work other people do for the same money, can also make you resentful of other staff, you can kind of alienate yourself from them also. The whole work system simply doesnt work in my opinion, it seems your damned if you do or damned if you dont whether you work hard or are lazy. Seems like most people dont actually like their jobs and that changing to a new job is often the only way people can give themselves hope and have some variety in their life and make it interesting. Its a fairly new thing going out to work for a wage for humans when you think about it, we are not designed to live like this.

Let's talk about the elephant in the room shall we? Money Most people, even though few admit it, would leave a job for another if its paying, say, a minimum of 10% more. This is especially true given the cost of living crisis sweeping the world just now. So, I'm surprised this reason didn't make the top four - it should probably be number 1, I'd suggest. Also, listening to staff is pointless if the feedback isn't acted upon. If an employer does that, they're just paying lip service. I'd argue it would be better not to ask for employees' opinions at all than get those opinions and do nothing with the feedback. It's, actually, quite insulting, from an employee's perspective. I'm also wondering why this point wasn't mentioned in the video?

I don't think anywhere in the video we said ask for advice and don't do anything with it. We have made a lot of videos on this subject and always make the point to listen to staff to get a better understanding of what they are encountering in their jobs so you can make adjustments. Yes people will move on to a new job for more money, it will always be that way. But a good business owner can also have a lot of staff stick around who would rather work in a good environment over an extra ten percent. And a well run business should be able to offer some extra money for key staff without worrying about money.

@@MatterhornBusinessDevelopment Yes, but you didn't say that businesses should do something with the feedback either. That's more important than asking for feedback. In my current role, the company surveyed its staff. My younger colleagues were so pleased that they were being asked for their opinions. I reserved judgement and said I'd wait to see what, actually, changed, as a result of the survey. Of course, nothing has changed in 9 months and, unsurprisingly, one of those younger staff has lost patience and quit. I also suspect most people would change employers for a 10% salary rise. 5%, probably not but the way inflation is going just now, staff can't afford real terms pay cuts. My employer has given us 3% and over half the company are on the job market.

It is important to recognize that these things also create the situation where people who could and should be great employees, aren't. The line from the man on the left "good employees want to do more, bad employees want to do less" is a bad manager attitude. Good managers inspire their workforce to contribute. Bad managers demotivate and alienate good employees and get less out of their teams than they should. Employee behavior is the result of the SYSTEM and it is the responsibility of management to build and run a good SYSTEM. The man on the left does redeem himself a bit when he says you cant blame a person for doing a bad job when they havent been given the tools to do a good job.

They completely skipped over lack of compensation which is the real number 1 reason that good people jump ship. These two are so out of touch with reality.

On the training issue, I know of a person that perpetually complains that they did not have enough training to do complete their tasks. It was them deflecting responsibility and putting it on management. No initiative, no responsibility, total avoidance.
@udirt

everyone meets a few of that kind, yeah. maybe an excellent manager can give them the right env to shine, or maybe they simply have chosen the wrong job. probably also something a manager will need to help them figure out. i suppose the combination matters - without great management talent (*raises hand*) a non-learner kinda person can ruin a lot, and even for good managers (from what isaw) it seems that such a person is very detrimental to the manager's well-being. it sucks! my life lesson is to act swiftly, openly and foremost: decidedly.

Management needs to ensure staff is trained properly to do the job. It’s a two way street. We have staff who don’t take initiative but we also have managers who don’t manage.
