Lord of the Rings has the perfect world for a total war title. And not as huge a unit roster/mythical as Warhammer, so could be one game with some dlc

I mean they really do have a lot we just never get to see most of them on screen so most people don't even know they exist, like the various cities of Gondor and their forces, the most famous being the Pelagar Marines. It's just that the good guys don't have many "monsters" beside the Eagles, Beorn and The Ents. While there are all various kinds of troll and ogre variants for the bad guys, the mumakill, fell beasts, giant spiders. Even Shelob could possibly be a hero type character. I can see them mixing book and movies too like Aragorn as a lord can go recruit a limited amount of the oathbreakers, where the army of the dead wasn't in the books.

@@URKCEHinoSuu well, no if you think about it! They'd have a unit cap of 3 ad there are only 3 dragons by the time she's a main player in the race for the Throne. Plus, they'd need either her on the field or some "Dragon Blooded" relative to keep them from going in a rampage. Plus, Scorpion (bolt throwers, essentialy) and arrows are quite effective against them. They wouldn't be nowhere near as OP as many think.

That is a good list for sure. Europa Total War would be awesome, maybe start with the 30 years' war, maybe the War of the Spanish Succession...I'd love to see it continue on until the Napoleonic era, but that's probably asking too much. I'd also like it to encompass the age of exploration: establish colonies, fight wars in the Americas and India and Africa with natives and other European powers. Mmm, yes, but too ambitious. So they can be separate games: "Total War: Colonization", and "Napoleon II". I was a little surprised you didn't have Medieval III on your list; too obvious? My personal desire would be a fantasy title: "Total War: Greyhawk". The Great Kingdom of Aerdy invades west, war with the Giant Kingdoms...maybe that's just me.

1. A genuine LOTR title would be the dream. Modders have shown there is SO MUCH you could do. Unfortunately, as you yourself observed, it's very unlikely for licensing reasons. 2. In terms of historical titles I want a pike and shot. I feel like this is an extremely logical step as it works well with the resources and tools they have already, as well as the engine. A game that bridges the period between the last third of Medieval 2 and the first third of Empire/Napoleon. Tercio's, pistol cavalry, etc. There are several historic dates/periods one could set it in, but the 1500's to the 1700's seems like a good swathe. Plenty you can deal with there. 3. I genuinely think Age of Sigmar would be a good fit for the engine and the gameplay, the issue obviously would be what realm to set it in and the world map itself. This is unfortunately also very unlikely due to licensing reasons 4. Medieval 3 is the big obvious "break open in case of need for big money" glass case they're sitting on after Rome 2 was a dogs breakfast (and still hugely successful despite that)

I would love to play the second option and was going to propose something similar. This time period is awesome for total war game. Especially if they can make handguns work properly. Like not blocked by little bump or irregular terrain. This period saw a lot of very fascinating things - rise and decline of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Expansion of Ottomans, Rise of Muscovy principality, Rise of Sweden, Habsburgs, Spain. Tercios, Gustavian Infantry, Janissaries, Streltsy, Winged Hussars and a lot more. They could make each and every nation unique, like in Warhammer. No need for big amount of cloned units. Plus, it's a great period to revive naval battles. A lot of advancements in shipbuilding took place in that time period. But it would be a costly Total war from a work and money perspective. It would need a lot of research and creation of new assets. Not sure if current CA would do something like this. Still, I would love to see PLC Winged Hussars charging and crushing Spanish Tercios head on with their 6m long lances. That would be an awesome thing to see.

This current engine is dogshit and lifeless, if they made a pike and shot it would be awful, they need a new engine before they should undertake something with that much depth and nuance, or else you'll get reskinned warhammer where everything is just a spreadsheet with no nuance based on any number of factors in battle. Pike&shot would be great but it would need to be done correctly to show how combat in the different theatres of war vastly differed from others, because the doctrines of the time varied widely

I would love a total war in Sapkowski's wither universe. Everything is there nations at war with hero charakters and legendery leader. There is even room for expansion in not so well known areas like sarakania or the blue mountains.

The more I think about it, the more I could definitely see a Total War: Witcher working with the formula. All the politics and battles that take place in the setting could work really well. Nilfgard vs Temeria/Aedern vs Redania would make for a pretty interesting conflict, and there's lots of potential for smaller factions to throw a wrench in the works. Plus there's plenty of mages and characters to bring to the table, like you said. I could even see some kind of mechanic where monsters begin appearing, especially as war takes it's toll on the land - forcing you to hire witchers or take other measures to try and deal with them.

@@darthnihilus6211 Have you seen Arcane or heard of it? It’s based on the world of League of Legends. Plenty of world building there. Over 100 notable characters who could easily be lords and heroes. Magic plays a big part of the world so there would be a magic system too. It’s a pretty flexible world that wouldn’t have a shortage of unit options. There’s no shortage of potential tbh.

WH 40k is no-brainer at this point Star Wars: Clone Wars would be very easy to do after 40k, it would me mostly reskin of that game Warcraft would work nice, I guess, but I'm not sure if cooperation with Blizzard would work for both parties... One more proposal: Stormlight Archive - based on book series by B.Sanderson. If you don't know it, go read "Way of Kings" - it has clear races and factions that can be incorporated, focuses mostly on war, and has great magic system that would work well on battles and campaign map. Many characters from the books are ready to be made Lords and Heroes in the game, and the books even depict who trains the best archers and who has better spearmen, so faction bonuses are ready for copy-paste. It's also one of best selling book series, so the game would sell well. Sanderson is a cool guy, big fan of civ6, I bet he would love that kind of game! Also: sprens!

Warcraft Total War sounds really cool. We got to experience smaller scale battles in a larger war in the Warcraft games, now it's time to experience the war itself. I'd personally love a Warhammer 40k Total War set in the Unification Wars on Terra. Let us control the Emperor himself as a faction lord and use both diplomacy and warfare to unite all of Terra under the Imperial banner.

I'd play it. Having said that, Game of Thrones feels more like Crusader Kings than Total War (and there's an excellent CK mod for it). It's really more about intrigue than outright war.

Med 3 is obvious, but specifically I'd like to see maybe 800 to 1500, complete with speculative a-historical units as tech progresses, so that if a faction outperforms its historical basis then its tech can match its new potential. Include emergent factions (maybe as existing sub-factions within a starting "alliance" or something, which can split off and be renamed when appropriate). Wheel of Time would make an excellent TW game. You'd have several Shadow factions (one per Forsaken, perhaps), as well as at least one (probably two) Seanchan faction, several Aiel factions, and each Randland nation (so lots of large and small ones). You could have a story campaign where you control Rand as he unites the world and then fights the Last Battle, and a sandbox game. Channelers would make great "hero" units akin to spellcasters in TWWH, as would certain other named characters or special monsters. Mat's Band of the Red Hand could make for a really fun horde faction with exclusive access to cannons once you tech it up far enough. Empire 2 could be great, especially if it shifted the timeline a bit forward. Say, 1750 to 1900. This gets you plenty of tech progression without having to deal with full-on trench-and-artillery WWI systems, and covers a number of major wars which could get their own mini-campaigns. WH40k has potential, but they'll need to be careful about how units operate. IMO that setting works a little better for a Company of Heroes type of game. If CA can get skirmish-style squad behaviors working, with lots of cover use and such, then I could see it being a truly great game. Hopefully the DKoK will be playable as a Guard sub-faction at launch.

As an historical fan converted temporarily by WH2 and WH3, I am really hesitant about 40k. If there is to be another Fantasy theme, it should be closer to earth, more specifically *Narnia*. Or Star Wars I guess. But the priority should lie with recapturing the roots with either Medieval or Empire.

I think Warhammer 40k is really a no-brainer for CA. It's a good opportunity to build on their relationship with GW and they already have lots of assets they could borrow from Warhammer 3 (pretty much all of the daemons, and maybe even some animation rigging for humanoids and greenskins).

Total War: Pike and Shot is my big one. A very unique and cool era of warfare. Lots of potential factions. Cover the 30 years war. Dutch Wars of Independence. English Civil War. Sengoku Jidai. Fall of the Ming and Rise of the Qing. Mughal Empire in India. It's the missing link between Medieval and Empire.

I think a massive DLC for medieval 3 could be a Game of Thrones one, they could use the dragon mechanics from Warhammer, most soldiers would just be reskins, the white walkers would be buffed up ice demons from Warhammer, etc. The map itself would probably take the most work along with a far better political system, essentially copy crusader kings 3s homework with that however make it a bit simplified for the masses.

A WW1-era title would be very interesting, but a bit hard to do justice to considering how much of a turning point it was. It could benefit from a 3K approach, where you can start at various points in time. Emergence of the post-war order would be interesting, as well as pre-American-entry, post-American-entry, just after the cascading alliances draw most great powers in and just before the latest alliance system is in place. Another thing to consider would be the regime changes; Empire already had something similar where the capital being taken by a rebellion would change a faction's regime depending on who the rebels were, and a WW1 game could really benefit from a similar mechanic; though maybe something more formal like HOI4's focus trees. In terms of fantasy, I'd love to see an original fantasy series in the vein of Age of Mythology. A large real-world map filled with local myths to recruit, with legendary heroes to enlist, and mortals to rally.

I’m not really sure how a total war 40K would work, like would the empire of man and the mechanicus all be one faction? I suppose if they did that it would work, but in past I’ve heard of making expansions for specific space marine chapters, would they just be unit packs? How would warp travel work? Would chaos factions all be in the eye of terror? Would they have to go through a specific path to get out? I suppose you could have it all on one planet and just have a collective goal for everyone and have the space marines and guard both ordered to get it irregardless of the other a la dawn of war winter assault, but would there be other planets with different layouts?

Im pretty hopeful that we'll get ww1 and 40k, and relatively close together, in my mind at least i see a lot of overlap in requirements to make it work. Artillery, tanks, mass infantry charges across no man's land, flying units (i know that tactical fighters directly engaging with ground forces during battles might not be historically common in ww1 but we'd still see it in game regardless), naval battles with massive ships slugging it out (granted that in 40k they'd be in space). Really biggest major difference being monster and hero units in 40k needing to be represented.

I think a Game of Thrones/Westeros: Total War could be interesting. Season 2 of House of the Dragon was fairly well received as far as I can tell, so CA could capitalize on the hype train to make that title. It would also be a way to scratch the itch of both Historical and Fantasy players as there wouldn't be as huge of an emphasis on the fantasy elements with just a few monsters scattered here and there. It also has a natural import of Warhammer's Endgame Crisis mechanic in the form of the invasion of the Others. Have the base game release with Stark, Lannister, Baratheon and the Crownlands, with Pre-Order bonus being House Targaryen across the Narrow Sea. A few natural DLC expansions would be to add House Greyjoy with improved focus on naval battles, then House Martell and House Tyrell as a Lord vs. Lord style pack. If it goes well other factions could be added over time, or even other major conflicts in other points in history like what we saw done in Three Kingdoms. Being able to jump between the War of the Five Kings as the game's primary focus with chances to dip into the Dance of Dragons, the Robert's Rebellion and maybe the Blackfyre Rebellion could be a fun way to integrate some of the stronger features seen in WH and 3K.

i see 40k mentioned often as a total war title, but ive never heard a way it would play or even be implemented in the current engine (or the rumored new engine). modern conflict isnt line battles like the engine is made for. even WWI "Trench warfare" (as people imagine it) is pushing it as far as i can tell. I honestly dont think its a possibility while using this format. Personally id love to see Empire II, a Pike and shot era, or American Civil war/ Victorian era where you have a taste of the 'modern'

I could see them doing a lot with what they have for those eras when you look at what the modding community has done for warhammer total war. I know modders and developers approach things differently, but when you look at the scale of immortal empires and the old world for mapping and things like building slots expanded and sfo and such that overhaul combat and technology I could see a very promising game in those eras with what they have right now.

I would love to see these eras becuae the combat fits the tw blueprint, but they have to be flushed out properly and with depth.

I think the brothers' war from magic the gathering would make a great total war game probably smaller, more saga sized, but I think it could work really well, there are alot of interesting things that could be done with it, and there would be some awesome units and mechanics

Historical a combined Empire-ww1 covering approximately a 100 years from the Napoleonic wars to world war 1 would be amazing. It's perfectly doable as this hundred years period uses mass infantry, rifles, horses, canons and artillery. For fantasy: Definitely Lord of the rings. Everyone loves it, it's the father of all fantasy stories. We need a Lord of the ring total war. For sc-fi I prefer Star wars than 40k. but 40 k seems more realistic given that most of their battles are on land whereas star wars focuses much on space battle.

For me, there is one TW historical game that I would love to play. Something in 16-18 century. With all those great powers of that time period and their signature units. For example, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and their Winged Hussars. Spain and their Tercios, Ottoman Janisaris and Spahis, Muscovy and later Russian Streltsy, Sweden and Gustavian Infantry and Reiters. Habsburgs, France, England, Portugal. Lot of potential for DLC content too. For example, starting with 6-8 "great players" of that time period and adding smaller and harder one over few next DLCs. There are at least few important states in Holy Roman Empire and Italy worth their own DLC. And if they would decide to make this game spanning whole World then there is even more. Rise of Mughals in northern India, Vijayanagar struggle against Muslim sultanates in south of that continent. Manchuria Invasion of Ming China and formation of new Qing dynasty, colonization on all continents and a lot more potential content for them to make. With good gunpowder unit gun play mechanics, cavalry charges and artillery bombardments, this time period would be awesome to portray in a TW game. Plus, it is a great time period to bring back naval battles. There were a lot of advancements and diversity in shipbuilding of that time period. This is a great time period to make each country unique, with almost no clone units. Heck they could even add unique mechanics for each nation, religion could be an important factor too, because it was from historic perspective in that time period. It could be their historical Warhammer with potential of milking it for years to come.

​@@MariziusYes and no at the same time. I played only the first Cossack game, but the combat system in that game was shit, in my opinion. With AI spamming and controlling half of the map of units without any problem, I never liked that game and finished campaigns only using console commands/cheats to check what was there from a story perspective. What I wish for is Total War game in a very interesting period, with chance to be supported for a long time. The battles of that time period were much more than just the exchange of fire from range. In that time period, musketeers/arquebusiers were shooting like 2-3 shots per minute. There was a lot of cold steel action, too. Especially in Eastern Europe where one cavalry charge could change battle in an instant by routing enemy forces. For example battle of Kircholm the PLC won against Sweden with force proportions like 1:3. But not only at east. Landsknechts in Western Europe were also force to be reckoned with at the start of my proposed time period. Plus, the first tercios were also melee oriented like 4 pikemen and 1 arquebusier. An example of cold steel action in Western Europe would be the Battle of Rocroi 1643 where French cavalry did a lot of work to win the battle for them and destroy Spanish infantry and tercios. Comeback of city buildings from medieval 2 and Rome 2 would be great too. This slot system and the infinite manpower of modern titles are stupid, in my opinion. Plus, naval battles are coming back with a big boom. All those ships from that time period and their evolution from caravels and caracks to Man-o-wars and ships of the line at the end of it.

Maybe a dumb question, but could someone explain how a 40k/WW1 game would work? I’ve only ever played titles with medieval combat, front lines clash, ranged support, and cav flanking. So, I’m just not picturing how 40k with sci-fi weapons and small squad numbers or WW1 where the image is trench warfare, a battle of attrition for months would work.

There are already some examples that have used the typical Total War gameplay for modern or sci-fi settings: "Star Wars - Empire at War", "War Leaders - Clash of Nations" (WW2) and "The Great War - Western Front", and some elements also in "WH40K Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2" (strategy campaign map). Warhammer TW already has some important gameplay mechanics: weapon teams, tanks, flight units, artillery. The regiments just need to be "smaller", and in particular a better terrain system or cover system etc. needs to be developed for such games. That's where I see the real problem... And in general, it must be said that Warhammer 40K also offers mass battles and a lot of close combat. Many WH40K troop types would take on exactly the same roles as typical unit classes such as cavalry or skirmishers, so the tactical component would not be missing. There was also the "WH40K Epic" tabletop, with mass armies and huge regiments. So it could work, but whether CA still has what it takes to develop a really good and innovative new game is more of a question.

For 40k, I think CA could borrow a lot of the unit sizes from Warhammer 3. Astartes are basically Aspiring Champions with guns, Guardsmen are like Free Company Militia, and your basic Tyranid Gaunts are like peasants or goblins. Even though there's more guns in 40k, just about everyone has lots of melee capability too, so it's not really that much different from Warhammer 3 in practice.

The real reason why we didn't get a Warcraft 4 is because ActiBlizz just had no faith in it. I remember seeing an article recently where former Blizz devs mentioned that they floated several strategy titles on to higher ups, including Warcraft 4, and the higher ups just had no interest in it.

I agree that Medieval is probably the next historical title coming our way. It may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't think they should do another empire tw, at least not yet. I would much rather see another Rome first. Post medieval and pre iron age have the same issue, a lack of variety on the battlefield. Don't get me wrong, Empire was a lot of fun, but only for 2 or 3 campaigns. Games like Rome and Medieval had a reason to try out most factions. As for fantasy, 40k is a gimme for them with the popularity of warhammer. But after that either LotR or Warcraft would make great titles. I'd even throw in Starcraft as a fun possibility. Star wars on the TW scale would be fun as well, however I don't think the TW battlefield fits in the space setting. So it would have to be restricted to surface conflicts.

They need to release non-competing products. LOTR for instance would be sort of similar to Warhammer with less magic so I would like them to wait till they can make it significantly better as otherwise fear they would be releasing a product that would just seem like a mini campaign. So would like to see them do kinda classes of products that aren't repeated within say 10 years. So maybe Medieval 3 next (traditional), couple years later 40k (sci-fi), couple more empire 2 or WW1 (historical guns) then LOTR followed going back to a sword and archer historical period. Feel that would work best for them and could support each for say 4 years with DLC so always 2 running with DLC support.

For me 1. Total War: Fire and steel. Set in the late renaissance and ending with the crisis of the 30 years war. We would get great unit variety with a great mix of medieval sword, shields, and pikes while also getting guns and artillery (Also naval battles). The campaign would end with an end game crisis of the 30 years war, we could get weather mechanics like in Atilla and the campaign would lean heavy into the religious divide of Europe and the early days of north American colonialism. 2. Total War: A Song Of Ice And Fire. This would be a great mix of historical and fantasy players. The game would be set in the Age of Kings in westeros and the end game crisis would be the invasion of Aegon the conquer. Westeros was very divded and cosntantly at war until the targaryians showed up and it would be the perfect setting for a fantasy total war game. Games i don't want to see. Another Warhammer title (this includes 40k), LOTR, Star wars.

ASOIAF is perfect, we would get Great battles along with a setting filled with individual houses with their own goals. Also this may be sacrilege but I think ASOIAF world is more grounded then Tolkiens world building. I won’t deny how important the man is but Martin has created a much better and more modern world with richer history. Tolkiens work is filled with cliches (although not cliches at the time)

The Empires of Russia and Austria-Hungary fell, Germany lost its colonial empire, the Ottoman Empire was fatally wounded and disintegrated in a few years. Even though the British Empire “won”, and reached its greatest extent, the Dominions (Canada, Australia, NZ) gained a new sense of national identity, and Ireland was on its way to independence.

TSR/D&D have a setting called "Birthright" that would fit a Total War setting quite easily, check out Birthright The Gorgon's Alliance from 1997 by Sierra as an example, should be available on emulators. Personally in an ideal world that game would be taken as is & updated, graphics, adventures etc & expanded into the other continents beyond Anuire. But that , I suspect is only if I could club together a Euromillions win & hire a dev team on their own. Well worth view/play through on it's own, as even though it's dated, has good mechanics & replicability, I think it would be right up your street.

1. Lord of the Rings. Only issue is lack of legendary lords/characters. You would have to mod the shit out of it in order for it to have real depth. 2. Star Wars. Excellent depth, lots of legendary heroes & characters but Total War has not had great success in naval battles so space naval battles would likely be diminished. Same with 40K 3. Game of Thrones. Again, lots of legendary lords & characters but not enough depth unit wise. Would see a lot of copy & paste. 4. I’d like to see a south/central/North American total war game but you’re beyond limited in historical scope & fantasy scope too. It couldn’t be historical because there’s no depth in characters or units. So it would have to be the same as Troy which no one liked. 5. Hellenistic/Persian/Medes link up with Alexander the Great & Darius. Small game but epic.
