If someone is narcissistic enough to turn their nose at someone in waste disposal then they need to find a way to stop producing waste and also turn their nose to linemen, water company employees, gas employees, police, fire department, EMTs, and any other civil servants who spend their lives making sure we have all our first world amenities. Besides, anyone with half a brain should know "garbage men" have always made good money. Great benefits too if you work for the city.

@@PsychGirlRaven why not? In most places it's completely automated. You drive a truck, push a button and an arm comes down and dumps the bins. Where I live it's been like this for probably 20 years. Unless you live in a town that doesn't have trash pickup/public works and you have to pay a company to come get it or take it to the dump yourself. A couple counties surrounding my major city are like that. Some of the private disposal companies aren't automated. I probably wouldn't work for them either but not because it's gross or stinks. You have to be exceptionally fit to lift garbage cans and bags all day and I'm not. I have a major leg injury that has not only caused problems with my dominant leg but both knees, back, etc. So it would be physically impossible but nothing to do with the stink or overall grossness of the job.

My husband was a supervisor over waste management. (He went out in the field to help his guys often tho) He’s got some stories lol. He was working in a small town when a creepy guy came up to his truck and says “I took care of the children, “ over & over.” Uhhh what Sir!? What does that even mean!?

Experienced something similar to the maggots. I thought it was raining one night but when I looked outside, it was dry, not even humid. I followed the noise downward to this gap in the window sill that held the window crank, I turned on my flashlight and saw tons of shiny black movement. I had a huge infestation of carpenter ants in my window next to my bed. So glad I wasn’t there to see them opening up that wall. Knowing I was sleeping near that many bugs still gives me the heebie-jeebies. 🤢🤢

About story #1: I just had to leave my thoughts on that one. The first thing I have to say is, it was so kind of amusing to hear Joel's dulcet but distinctly American accent, reading something plainly written by someone who would have a pretty strong working-class British one! 😁 And now about the story itself: I think I've worked out a pretty good theory on this. That house was definitely lived in last by an old man who obviously was a WWII pensioner, having his uniform and gear that he was so proud of set up untouched for the ages, basically. He aged, died there alone... and the house was left empty because of being intestate; you know, he was unmarried, no direct descendants, it probably ended up in probate - and by this time it would have been like between about 1998 and 2002, I'm guessing, since the guy said it had been 20 years since it happened. And he'd died in, I'm guessing also, about 1984 or 1985. And the house had been empty that entire time. Somehow the house had been claimed by the crown or something, finally, and the first person to walk through had to have been that woman - and she DEFINITELY wasn't interested in going back! Oh, and of course, the old man wasn't exactly pleased at his things being disturbed, and let that cleaning guy - bloke? - know it! There you go, the backstory from a writer (with a lifelong specialty in British literature). 😉

I worked one summer in Toronto during a garbage strike, and fights broke out between strikers and private contractors (bags would be split open with broom handles that had open nails on the end). I have nothing but respect for the ones who had to handle that mess. And my first job was cleaning movie theatres... That was as close as I want to get to any of these stories...

Absolute best case scenario for the last story: the kid found Boots's body unbeknownst to his mom, put him in the garbage himself, and somehow came to terms with mortality on his own which led to him acknowledging that he no longer had a cat. This is also probably the most unlikely scenario, especially given how old he was (and I don't think any sort of neurodivergence would make such a thing easier to get over at that age) and how Boots died from severe injury rather than declining health. I may have been able to peacefully say goodbye to my dog and not be nearly as broken up about him as my mom was, but I was 17, he'd been sick for a while, and I had a feeling he wasn't getting better anyway (that and I'm not the one who discovered his body). EDIT: Forgot about the detail of Boots being found in the _neighbor's_ can... :S

I worked on a landfill by NOLA. We got alot of bodies in it. With some wrapped in rugs( 1 time the guys were playing with the maniquns. Making sit next to them in the heavy machinery etc. But one guy found one that felt weird and was soft. Turns out it was a young, dead,black woman. She was wrapped up in a rug. Its sad. The boy in the last story would benefit from being taken to their local crisis center and assessed by a professional. I've worked with individuals who harm animals, including their own pets-the writer pointed out many red flags in the child's description. Of course, mom would have had to be aware of everything. Because of the emotional attachment, it's easier for people to hide their behavior from their loved ones.

Maggots? LOL, be a livestock farmer sometime. Maggots by the thousands are a given. They're quite proficient at making a dead body nothing but bones in relatively short order. He's spot on about that 'sizzling' sound. I mean for all you city folks, where do you think houseflies come from? Thankfully, I stopped raising pigs 18 years ago so no huge hordes of flies since. And, the rats have all vacated the premises! Um, I don't like rats... at all. lol For a time, I was a garbage hauler in South Dakota's largest city. All in all, a great job for building muscles. We had 6 pickups with a covered steel box on the back. No hydraulics, just hinged to dump into the hopper of the huge packer truck via a cable. Back in those days, I and a few of the other drivers vended at flea markets, etc. I was amazed by all the cool stuff people threw away. The weirdest thing had to be a fired military bazooka. The downsides were early mornings and long hours, basically go to work in the dark and finally home in the dark. Oh and, the lady who haphazardly tossed well used diapers 'toward' the can. THAT was disgusting as hell and what eventually got me fired. You see, my boss was a holy roller who absolutely did not tolerate foul language even if it fit the scene to the letter. The sloppy diaper lady called in my nasty US Navy learned language. F her anyway. It was time to pursue a different job. That was way back in the 1980's. Seems like yesterday though.

I've seen a number of houses for sale that have been truly stuck in different eras. I'd been tempted to buy one, but my country's market quickly lifted everything I'd like out of my reach. These houses are novelties, so they could go for a bit. The pickles in the story were a funny touch. They might have been personal nostalgia (a loved one's) and left.
