We booked with Celebrity Cruises which stops near Antarctic Islands, for $2,000 per person, window cabin. The equally large Norwegian Cruises allow tourists on boat tenders to land on Antarctic ports. They charge almost double per person for the privilege so we stuck with what we could afford. Point is, certain large cruise lines must pay off that Antarctic watchdog group because this has nothing to do with numbers of passengers nor ship sizes.
@tipsfortravellers2 жыл бұрын
As per my other reply you will definitely not be going on land anywhere in Antarctica on any ship carrying over 500 guests. www.antarctica21.com/journal/are-small-ships-better-in-antarctica/

Thoroughly enjoyed the information in this video, I had no idea of the numbers humans had killed and continue to kill just through our lifestyle. The plastic is a big problem. Filter you washing machine water folks, I do and am shocked by what I find in the filter bag. I did not know about the Reindeer and rats on Sth Georgia. I am going again in a few days and this time, like you, am going to Sth Georgia.

YES, it is very different now in Antarctica. I was in Antarctica in November 2022. We were ONLY allowed to walk and stay on a narrow marked trail, pretty far from the animals. We had to step in a bucket of disinfectant before stepping foot on land and were told to NOT touch land with anything but our boots. I think you will need a big lens to have any pictures worthwhile. Big concern over Transmitting Bird Flu to penguins and other birds and us (a big invasive species!) Bringing plant and animal invasive species to the pristine environment.

Thanks for this, Gary. I'm booked on an Antarctic cruise that does *not* include the So. Georgia Islands, but *does* go south of the Antarctic Circle. What's your thinking on the relative merits of going further south versus going to the Islands?
@tipsfortravellers2 жыл бұрын
That will be a unique experience as not many of the cruises got that far. So that will be a big thing in itself. It will be incredible, of course. You will see less wildlife in numbers as when South Georgia. But any trip is fantastic for sure!

Hi Gary, we're actually planning to go to Antarctica for next year and were looking at Silversea for their 10 day Antarctica expedition cruise and was wondering if you thought that would be the best option for our first experience going down to Antarctica since they're who you went with your first time. It's an important trip for us, but also I probably wouldn't be able to recreate it until much later in my life if it turns out to be a bad experience ( I know that sometimes it's up to the weather, so more of the actual experience that was up to Silversea) or if you have any other lines that are worth considering in the same price range

They are excellent and definitely high on the list. The main reason I went on another line for my next trip was they were not doing the itinerary I wanted when I booked to go again

I had been a gold member with my late husband on Seaborne. As lovely as these videos appear, the cruise director makes little effort in doing anything realistic to make the cruise more enjoyable. Excursions used to be a very big problem. They were limited in ridiculously low numbers. I just saw the prices on the upcoming cruises , and $45,000 a person is a lot of money. I much rather take other types of vacations where u aren’t stuck onboard if a port won’t let you off or if a port won’t accept you. This ship is getting a lot of attention, but most of your time will be spent onboard, boredom leads to eating & weight gain, and everything you would normally opt for onland is 3-4 times the regular price.

After that, I have just spent over half an hour looking for trips! Sea sickness is a big issue for me-couldn’t even cope with a whale watching trip off the coast of NSW with seasick pills on board. Of course the fear of it is just as bad. Anyway I have ordered a brochure, so that is a start. It is sad that the biggest danger to these amazing place is us.
@chriswilliams65682 жыл бұрын
You are more likely to get sea sick on a smaller vessel remember, those little boats will often do it. You hardly feel any movement on a large cruise ship.
@sylviekins2 жыл бұрын
@@chriswilliams6568 that is very likely true- also I should have thought about it- I was ok when we were underway, but of course you have to just idle and wait for the whales, so that was when I got sick- when we were just bobbling about! I should have thought of that! I was ok- just focussed on the horizon.

Dramamine isn’t always strong enough. You can try getting a script for Scopolamine; however, you cannot mix alcohol and scopolamine. Also, make sure you are told about ALL OF THE SIDE EFFECTS. They are some very serious (yet look innocuous) side effects.
@sylviekins2 жыл бұрын
@@KateandBree yes, I use hyoscine, which is over the counter in Australia. I am a doctor, and once took some stemetil to get the ferry from Melbourne to Hobart, but that is not good to use for long or if you want to be awake. I think my experience of crossing the North Sea on a 24 hour ferry from Harwich to Gothenburg in 1987 has remained in my memory. Definitely would not drink alcohol. Actually I suspect my anxiety about being sick makes a big contribution. Thank you for all your advice- there are some places I would dearly love to go, that can really only be visited by ship.
@KateandBree2 жыл бұрын
@@sylviekins Oh trust me, I get it! For the first two days, I had to drug myself with my anti-anxiety AND dramamine. (Not a good combo, but my doc said it was okay for one or two days.) I am the queen of anxiety. After being convinced I was not going to drown, I was like, okay, we're good. Therapy has helped tremendously with my doomsday thinking, but not with first time situations. I had booked a cruise to Antartica which included South Georgia and the Dec 4,2021 Total Solar Eclipse. Three days before flying to Argentina, Quark Expeditions phoned me to say that they had to start the trip later and as a result removed South Georgia from the schedule. I decided to go anyway, but fortunately the cruise got cancelled the day before embarking, due to crew testing positive for covid-19. Though I was very disappointed, I am now happy it got cancelled since South Georgia was removed from the trip. I have now rebooked an Antartica cruise including South Georgia for November 2022. But I have a question for you. Part of the compensation Quark Expeditions offered me was a 25 percent discount on any of their other cruises. I am planning to book a Canadian High Arctic cruise which includes Greenland for August 2023. I was disappointed that you said in this video that the Arctic is now changing- you waited too late to go. Were you were talking about Canada and Greenland or were you referring to Alaska or the European Arctic?

No one is living permanently in Antarctica. No one is farming in Antarctica. No one is mining in Antarctica. No one is manufacturing in Antarctica. If you think the numbers going to Antarctica to look at it, even if it was increased by 100 times is a threat to this enormous continent you have no concept of proportion or scale. 99.9% of animals on Antarctica will never see a human. Climate change is the threat to Antarctica we are responsible for. Focus on that.
