4 Unserious Sabbatical Skills to Practice Today | Black Women Nomads | Let’s have some fun! What 4 things do I wish I had learned to do BEFORE I quit my job to travel for a year on my career break?
1. How to negotiate in markets abroad
2. Selfie photography
3. House sitting
4. Talking to total strangers in English and in THEIR language
I DID end up learning most of this on my gap year. But I’ll never be good at negotiating. 😆

I went to the Ghanaian market with a Ghanaian friend and he got frustrated and pulled me aside to say, "You look like a local until you open your mouth. As soon as you start talking the price triples. So stay quiet, don't even greet people, and point at what you want." Worked like a charm. It was awkward pretending to be mute but I got some great pieces!

Haggling is so hard because I believe to respect the person pay what they ask or don't get what you are trying to buy. Also if you refuse to pay the price & walk away sometimes people will take what you have. It's a matter manipulative thing both on the buyer & the seller. I try to respect & then understand I can buy it later. Patience for what we are looking for.

Thank you for the video, Stephanie! My rules of negotiation are: (1) find out what it cost the seller to obtain the item (if possible/applicable); this is the least I can expect to pay. I will set a target number based on this number and my budget / what I feel is reasonable. (2) Offer 70% of the sale price if it is at or below my target amount; I have found that this is often the least sellers are willing to accept; it also gives me a lot of room to haggle. (3) If the seller refuses, increase my offer by 5% increments, but after 2 increases with no agreement I decide this person probably will not budge from their price and I either (a) pay the last price they asked for or (b) walk away, depending on my target price /budget.

Ms. Perry, you already did the heavy lifting of starting this wonderful movement for black women. Surely, you can master and finesse the art of haggling.😊

Stephanie, I haggled with the private car taxi from Cape Town airport at night to our meetup at the Hyatt. He asked for 400 rand and I bargained down to 350 rand which the hotel said the charge should be. Just in my nature.

I’m not good at haggling either. I went to Dubai and Oman. Going to the souks can be tiring because it’s a job to me. But my girlfriend is extremely well at it so I let her do it

In Marrakesh, Morocco a Berber showed Ama and I how to haggle. He wrote his price down, passed it to me, I crossed it out and replaced the price with something lower then what I was willing to pay. We did this 2 more times. We settled on the price I was willing to pay if I promised to bring /share his contact. He lived in the Atlas Mtns, 3 mo’s later earthquake.
