@killrade44343 жыл бұрын
I am surprised you guys didn't try spiking the door. Basically hammer a nail at an angel (45°)thru the door into the floor, wall or door frame on the door nob side. If you do it from swing in side it works like a door stop; if done from swing out side it acts like a dead bolt. You can even remove it and use it as a latch pin
@gothnate3 жыл бұрын
Should have tried penny locking the door. You basically apply pressure to the door and add coins as close to the door knob/dead bolt as possible. This keeps the pressure on the latch making it act like a lock. So, even in the event the person trying to get in has a key, this will keep them out. Barring any battering ram or tools being used.

First things first, the one with the broom needed the broom at the same level as the door knob. I've got one that apparently nobody ever thought of, ever. I learned it when I was in my early teens and needed some (ahem)privacy from my parents. Get an "eye bolt", well, more of an eye screw, and screw it into the gap between the door and door frame. You want the screw to be wide enough to grab into the door and frame but not so big that you completely destroy the door or frame when doing so. You can technically do this with almost any screw of the right size but an eye screw(or hook) is able to be done by hand and rather quickly. It'll leave very few marks on the door or frame but will prevent pretty much anyone from entering. This is only for an inward opening door, btw.

Then tie another loop using an overhand a distance from the first loop. Now take the free end and run the line through both loops twice. The goal is to make 2 pulleys and use the rope to apply a ton of tension into the line, then tie it off and be done

For the chord around the table leg I would have used a simple trucker's hitch. Relatively quick and allows you to get a 3:1 mechanical advantage on the door. Tie a buntline hitch or some other slip knot around the door handle, then run it around the table leg, then run the chord through the hitch again and trucker's hitch it. Then you can tie it off. For the broom handle, don't put so much slack in the chord; keep the broom level with the door handle. Then either use a clove hitch or a constrictor knot. Both are pretty fast to do if you know how to tie them. Especially when doing the loop method, because you can just slide the broom through the loops. Definitely don't use duct tape as a rope. The tensile strength on duct tape is way lower than parachord. You can tear duct tape with your hands.

You really ought to do more with an actual physical security expert. Deviant Ollam is highly knowledgeable on this. One of the points he likes to make in his physical security training is that bad door fitment is one of the biggest holes in security. You guys demonstrated that perfectly. The tying option could have gone better in both cases with better knots and a little more thought put into it. That said, it is completely worthless if someone takes the 10 seconds to knock out the hinge pins. Then they can just swing the door open from the other side. There are products that you can get to fix this. Asuming you did, your next weak point is the set screw holding your door knob on, which isn't that hard to overcome. The cheap metal broom handle would probably fail about as easily. The door stop method can be a lot more effective if you don't the cheapest rubber stops or a door that has a 2 inch gap between the bottom and the floor. There are products out there that allow you to get a lot of mechanical advantage on the door with a wedge and it will definitely stay shut. The chair method would have also worked a lot better with a chair that is solid on the top, not foam... As long as you have a more realistic door. I like watching you guys because you're funny, but recently it seems that the quality has been going down in terms of your effort put into research and preparation/setup.

I would assume the broom would work better if you minimise the distance between the door handle and the broom, and have the cord already at the best tension you can manage (if you have time to hammer some song nails (about the length a magician might shove up his nose, perhaps) through the handle into the frame that might also help (though you'd risk splintering the broom handle, so would need testing). Also, whoever chose the fabric for that chair was having an excellent day.

The 1" diameter steel drop pin method works better, no need to have any rope tying skills that you will forget in a panic moment. Just shut the door, pull the safety pin (like a fire extinguisher) and it falls into a receiving hole in the floor, thats it. Also then you arent depending on the shearing structural strength of the door knob. Or the rope decaying etc.

IIRC, usually front doors are made to always open outwards to prevent normal/petty break-ins. Or to prevent people from just ramming with the shoulder easily.
@Living_Dead_Girrl3 жыл бұрын
Inwards, otherwise someone can just grab the door when you partially open it. Opening outward wouldn't make it any harder to kick in, it'd actually be easier. If you have a solid door and decent door frame, they're likely to break a bone before shouldering your door open. People usually kick or jam the door... Or just pick the lock with a bump key. See KZbin tutorials on bump keys, and you'll realize the most commonly used locks don't keep people out. You have to invest in newer deadbolts, install a strike plate (prevents jamming), ensure hinges are sturdy, and all replace all metal plate screws going into door frame with 3" long steel screws. Door frames are usually 2" thick, and made from softwood like pine, which is easy to break, and most screws used are only 1.5". By using 3" *steel* screws, you attach the hardware that's keeping the deadbolt's latch secure will to the solid wood wall stud behind the door frame.

Pretty sure the doorstop one would work under different circumstances. In high school I used a doorstop to lock two football players out of the electronics lab. The main problem here (aside from the fake door with the fake floor and all the huge gaps) was probably using too many doorstops. If you wedge one in at the furthest point from the axis at the hinge, it's going to get pushed harder and harder against the floor as you push on the door. You use more than one, it spreads out that force and they're more likely to just slide across the floor.

Outward opening doors are potentially bad. Why? They can be blocked from the outside preventing easy exits. I had a situation where 2 stacked pallets of material was dropped in front of an outward opening door, actually a marked emergency exit. I could not bring enough force against the door to open it. The reason I broke out the window was there was a massive coolant leak. They were pissed when I used a fire extinguisher to break the glass, every time I told them to calm down, they got more incensed, so I asked them if they minded if I had OSHA explain the issue. Their jets cooled immediately, especially when I showed them photos of their emergency oxygen masks, with no air, and dried out rubber. Some workplaces are still deathtraps.

Some of this seems problematic since the door isn't properly fitted. Doorstops work well when the door is properly seated to a floor since they are friction based. The lower lip framing on the door there kinda destroys that ability. For the Broomstick one, since this is a ball knob I would assume it's an interior door so it's far more likely to have a wall or the door frame itself to lean against rather than flat across horizontally which removes the need for tape. The paracord as it's means of binding remains problematic. Second point on the broom one is how deep set the door is in the frame as it seems much deeper than an interior door would have.
@Show_My_Name_Not_My_Handle3 жыл бұрын
TL;DR: The doorstops failed because they're out of their element, and also because of the way the floor is built. The doorstops didn't work (likely) because there wasn't really any sort of floor for the flat portion to lay on. The way the doorframe is raised above the flooring allows the back ends of the flexible doorstops to bend down, which reduces the compression the material would need to undergo to slip free, assuming friction would hold it in place. The other problem with not having the floor flush with the frame for the doorstops, is it reduces the surface area which friction can act upon. Ofc, in these scenarios, greater surface area = greater friction = harder to open the door. Yet another problem is the doorstops themselves. They're flexible. Some, so much so, that Jason called it "worthless" and for this use, I have to agree. There are both higher quality doorstops available, and doorstops that have sawtooth like ridges cut into their bottom face, which when strong downward pressure is applied to them, bite into the floor, such that a portion of the flooring would need to be dug out, or for the doorstop/door to structurally fail, before the door would open if it were in place. They're distinct from the ones you have, that have teeth like that (of a sort), because yours are meant to dig into short carpet in an institutional environment, not hardwood. (And like, the ones that don't have teeth looooook like they're meant for tile, but like, we don't really get a super good look at 'em, or for very long, so IDK.) Straight up, I'd be willing to bet that with the gap you have there, you'd get better (though probably still not good) results wedging a couple sneakers under there. IDK enough to tell you why that's my bet, just intuition after seeing this play out. In your specific situation here, on this tester rig, it seems to me that a short prybar wedged against those joining plates, and braced against the bottom of the door, or perhaps even one of those cheap doorstops wedged underneath it would be much more effective. Then again, if it's a hollow door, enough force would probably just destroy the door, doing that. I wish I could just show ya all this. These sorts of things seem more easily understood visually. Hope I explained myself adequately.

Kinda interesting, Ive gone debt free and and credit card free my whole life so far. So I have no credit, which is going to complicate buying a house in the near future. Quite the relevant sponsor, hehe

i think that if you did the broom like you did the table, looped it around the broom and tying it to the knob instead of tying it to the broom and the knob, it would have worked better

Better solutions: wood door stops (their cheaper and customizable), a drill and some deck screws (most deck screws have >500# shear strength). Also, most entry doors open inward because the hinges wouldn't be exposed, but yeah if all the attacker has is their hands your mostly fine.

The chair one actually is effective...if your door has a handle and not a knob, also the chair kinda has to be the right size too but still, if the door has a handle then it's actually far easier to barricade.

easiest way to abracadabra a door.......wedges, 2 wedges, 1st wedge open edge of the door under the lock, 2nd wedge at the hinge vertical between the door frame and door......as long as the door opens inwards your set, just bear mind this is only as strong as your door.

The easiest way to barricade a door is to use a strips of Flex Tape around the door. You can always use door stops or whatever if you want extra protection I guess, but you seal up the doorframe from the inside and you'll be set for a bit.
