Thanks! This one is a 4 week program so there are 3 more patterns after this video. You don't need to spend all your time on these exercises but you can try to invest 30 min per day and try to keep it for 4 weeks. You can warm up with this video (10 min); kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmPVlmOrjNahbqc Then you can work on 4-week program exercises (30 min) Last you can improvise for 10 min Here you are, a very nice practice routine for a month. Hey man - started this 5 days ago, I've gone from playing pretty sloppy and fluffing out at around 140-150 to keeping it clean and in the pocket as far as 170. I'm doing 30 mins + every day, starting over on any mistake, like a computer game with no save. When you're dead, your dead. In the last session I played one run (almost clean) up to 220 before completely tripping up. The gains are real and 280 no longer seems like a pipe dream. I'm going to keep going - it's incredible, thanks for sharing this gold!

I am returning to guitar (4/25/2024) after taking the last 15 years off. As I've dove back in (head first), I've been trying to reinvent my picking and get my left and right hand on the same page again. I stumbled on this 4-week program a couple of days ago. I'll detail my Journey. I appreciate the way this is laid out. 5/22/2024 - Day 1 - I managed to get to 130bpm once... 5/23/2024 - Day 2 - I did one clean 140... 5/24/2024 - Day 3 - I did a clean 150... 160/170 just out of reach cleanly... 5/25/2024 - Day 4 - Clean 150 still not getting 160/170 5/26/2023 - Day 5 - Clean 150 still not getting 160/170 5/27/2024 - Day 6 - missed a day (holiday) 5/28/2024 - Day 7 - Clean 160 - 170/180 not yet 5/29/2024 - Day 8 - Clean 160 - 170 not clean, 180 getting closer 5/30/2024 - Day 9 - Clean 160 - 170 not clean, 180 getting closer 5/30/2024 - Day 10 - Clean 170 - 180 not clean, 190 out of reach currently 5/31/2024 - Day 11 - Clean 170 - 180 not clean 6/01/2024 - Traveling Day Off 06/02/2024 - Day 12 Clean 180 - 190 not clean 06/03/2024 - Day 13 Clean 180 - 190 not clean - but something is starting to happen... where I have spurts of shred, lol 06/04/2024 - Day 14 Clean 180 - 190 / 200 just out of reach clean 06/05/2024 - Day 15 Clean 190 - 200+ Not yet 06/06/2024 - Day 16 Clean 190 - 200+ Not yet - That being said; I used to struggle with 160/170 and I am doing them alot easier now. 06/07/2024 - Day 17 Clean 190 - 200+ Not yet - I can tell I will have to put in ALOT of work to keep building speed. :) 06/08/2024 - Day 17 Clean 190 - 200+ Not yet 06/09/2024 - Day 17 Clean 190 - 200+ Not yet 06/10/2024 - Day 17 Clean 190 - 200+ Not yet - at a 1/2 hour a day, I seem to have really hit a wall around 190/200... 190 I can get clean, but 200 is still just out of reach completely clean... - I may need to spend more time than a 1/2 hour a day.

I have been playing guitar from 2020. I have hardly practiced in the past couple of years. I have been trying to be consistent in my practice routine as I used to be earlier (I used to practice 2 to 3 hours daily in 2020 and 2021 and I majorly played fingerstyle.). I started sincere regular practice from yesterday (19/03/2024) and I have been following a few warm up and alternate picking exercises. This video of Ozz and the other two videos he has recommended made me realise that my picking technique was wrong. Today I came to realise that I have been playing alternate picking 'wrong' all along. I used to play economy picking instead of alternate picking. For the first time today since I have been playing guitar, I came to realise that my picking technique was wrong all along and I was using my wrist and not my hand to switch strings and that's why I was stuck and not able to increase my speed. Finally I have understood the mechanics of alternate picking and feeling a lot more confident. From today onwards, I'll be updating my practice sessions here in the comments. Thanks a lot Ozz for your videos, they help a lot! Keep up the good work.

Reporting back for day 2: I can do 180, but it does not feel like I am in control. I feels like this is more about being able to still feel the pulse at high tempos, if you know what I mean. @@s4tchowns Try different width picks. Example get some 0.71 mm tortoise delrin picks medium width. This will help your accuracy at going string to string during sweeps and scales. By forcing you to articulate how much force you use due to the flex of the pick the sound quality at speed will also increase. Then try the heavier width pick again. Likely you will have improved. Also your muscle memory in the fretting hand will improve from thinner medium picks. Lastly make sure you are holding the pick correctly side of index finger and thumbtip of picking hand, no fingers dragging on guitar with picking hand(look closely at Ozz precision picking hand on this video and emulate it)

Hi there. Been playing since 1987, right handed. Since 2005 left handed. I prefer left as its easier to get new ideas and because playing right handed is too easy physically its harder to form muscle memory. Second, ive recently started using delrin 0.71 mm medium picks. Yes its harder to play fast but this helps the fretting hand keep up and remember plus the notes sound better. Two days ago i used the jazz 3 pick again. Didnt like the tone and how it feels. I remember using heavy picks for several decades and that coupled with not holding the pick correct was frustrating(you can hear me playing on the youtube channel right handed using a thick pick and holding the pick with index and thumbtips). It amazes me that no one ever corrected me on my picking guess they thought i was stupid, didnt care, or wanted me to suffer. Theo Ziras video fixed my picking and Bernth perfected the technique its been one month now for holding the pick correctly. I use speed drills like these to come up with new odd sequences then i add those to what i can remember. I go back and forth between new ideas and drills, as speed comes with time. Last thing, i suspect Yngwie used medium picks early on because its like weight lifting for the hands listen to his early recordings. Likely he used heavy picks after he drove into a tree in '87, but not before then theres a pick delay. Being able to pick easier is not always the objective because once you can guitar isnt as much fun, thats why i started playing left handed(in my videos on youtube you can hear how hard i hit the strings right handed i cannot modulate the force which sucks as its like a hammer which wears out all picks easily), its harder(playing left) and likely suits my wiring better(my dad is a leftie and likely i shouldve been) although playing right is easier mentally(my left hand wears out fret wires quick on guitars) it is like staring at a brick wall for getting new ideas. I prefer new ideas and creativity and difficulty playing fast.

Thank you for this video. I'm giving the 4 weeks a go. 3 days in: day 1: 120 bpm day 2: 130 bpm day 3: 140 bpm These bpms represent precise playing without any string noise. At 150bpm+, performance appears to be limited by: - a tendency to over exaggerate the pick movement changing strings. - reaching the upper bound of my outside picking speed I've been doing the 30 minute session in full, and repeatedly slowing down to 60 bpm is helping me to refine the pick movement. Things I've been thinking about: - Minimizing pick depth - Consciously observing the pick hand movements when changing strings, and trying to minimize these. - Pick and fret hand force consistent (and minimal) at all speeds.
@OzzGuitar Жыл бұрын
Great!!! I can advise not to try to minimize pick-hand movement, actually you have to exaggerate the movement. Same as fingering hand, don’t try to minimize pressure. Think like this is a fitness exercise.
@bearandchicken5759 Жыл бұрын
@@OzzGuitar thank you for the reply :) I think I understand what you mean, but in my situation I'm trying to break some long standing bad habits. With outside picking: in situations when I reach a certain BPM, I overexaggerate the pick loop motion in order to ensure I clear the string and not get trapped - this is very noticeable as it causes a large wrist rotation. It's like a subconcious panic, if that makes any sense, which interrupts the flow. With the help of your exercises (and some others I'm focusing on), it's helping me defeat this, and I'm seeing improvements already.

Really focusing on moving my wrist, not my forearm, and keeping as little tension as possible in my wrist. I'm going to do this 4 week program and focus on building muscle memory to stay relaxed at higher bpm. Today my wrist just wanted to lock up and get sloppy at 160 bpm.

Restart when you mess up, like he says, and you'll get there in a few days... if you can make it more than two days lol Restarting is hard. This is more an exercise in patience than alternate picking. All the other thirty dayers don't tell you to restart... because no one, especially me, wants to f****** go all the way back to 50 bpm or whatever... but if you do... I'm only on day three but I went from about 180 clean to 220 clean... but I also restart a lot... not every time... I'm not a monk... but restarting at 90... or 150 when it starts to get fun... is a lesson in and of itself...

Day 1: 110 BPM cleanly, 120 BPM reached but not clean. (30-45 mins) Day 2: a bit better than yesterday. My pinky was hurting a bit so the practice session was short (20-30mins) Day 3: 120 BPM cleanly, 130 BPM sometimes clean sometimes not. Can't do 140 BPM cleanly at all. Day 3months: Practiced many other exercises in the mean time aside this. Learned lots of other stuffs too. Got my pinky finger warmed up, and improved my right hand control by this time. I can do 140 bpm cleanly and easily now. Kinda struggling with 150 bpm.

Day 10: still stuck at 140 BPM, in the meantime I practiced some other things to get comfortable with my pinky. I believe my pinky finger is now much more flexible after a week of practicing that. Now I came back to practicing this again.@@99Gara99

Day 21: Can do 140 BPM clearly. Stuck at 150 BPM. One thing I have noticed is that I should change my picking pattern a little. Even though I can place my left hand fingers correctly on the fret board at 150 BPM, my right hand picking seems to miss sometimes. So, trying to improve my picking technique. @@nikomimmo7154

So helpful thank you 🤙 only thing I couldn't figure out why I was messing up timing was the up stroke on the first note was on down stroke starting but then it changed to up stroke after the repeat 8-10-12 😅

I am an experienced guitar player and found this video. I wish it would have been around a long time ago because I wouldn't have had to learn the hard way. For beginner guitarists, this video will help you to learn faster alternate picking without having to learn how to do it on your own (save you a lot of time and you don't have to go back and relearn to fix mistakes you are making). I highly recommend this video - and thank Ozz for putting it up. Great video lesson!

My alternate picking isn't too bad but like anything, there is room for improvement. It is now September 02 (I was going to begin in earnest yesterday but unfortunately got sidetracked)so let us see where these 4 weeks will get me with a measure of proficiency.

Day 9: Break Day 11: In reality, regularly plateau at 120bpm but zoned out for a bit and managed to do 140bpm Day 12: Break. Day 14: 150bpm Day 15: 130bpm. Only 20 mins coz tired af Day 17: Break Day 18: 140 - 150bpm but I really need a string change Day 20: 140bpm Day 22-23: Break Day 24: 130bpm 😑 Day 25: Break Day 26: 130bpm Day 28: 150bpm Day 29: 140bpm. Only 20m coz I'm tired asf. Day 30: Break Day 31: 140bpm. It's getting easier at least. Day 33: 150bpm

Hey another tip that may help is using diff width picks. My comments a day ago said i was using 0.71 mm delrin pics which i do. I today tried the nylon 1.6 mm George Dennis nylon picks which ive hand since '16. I dont like the tone but got up to 135 bpm on septuplet scales easily after having used the 0.71 mm picks for the last week. Pick width matters for hand team work(synchronization) as well as tone quality as does pick material. Delrin sticks more than nylon and may wear more. Using a thicker pick for longer sequences of notes and a warmer sound which is quite common for lead guitar now. Thinner pick for a brighter sound and more of a pick workout on accuracy. The most important thing for guitar is the pick width and material as it affects the sound, feel and what you are trying to play. I like the thinner picks as that presents a barrier to picking fast with a resulting emphasis on ideas in the fretting hand. Once new ideas are made, the thicker mm pick can be used to create more notes around the original idea formulated with the thinner pick. There is not a definitive answer of what to do as the sounds and how the pick and playing feels depend on the pick material and thickness.

I advise you to not focus on the pic too much. Just practice these exercises with patience. If you have a good technique you can play with anything even with your credit card. It’s like Andy Roddick(tennis player) beating a university tennis player with a frying pan.

day 1 : 130bpm (able to play 140 bpm sometimes) day 2 : 140bpm (played at 150 bpm cleanly once in 90 mins and my wrist hurts. I was struggling to reach 130bpm at the start of my practice session, I attribute that to my lack of sleep)
