I have watched a LOT of videos on ADHD and procrastination - like, dozens, and this is one of the best I’ve seen. “I’ve spent a lifetime running myself into walls that I never had any business going toward” explains so much of my life (Dx ADHD/inattentive type @ age 60+).

In the beginning, the planning system was so overwhelming, I couldn’t even think of it without dread and panic. Menopause and severe family health issues compounded it. My advice to add is just to stand back, and if you are able, ask yourself is this the time to start these 5 principles and put extra burdens on yourself, or is it a time to look inward, settle down with your emotions and be kind and forgiving, embrace yourself as a wonderful unique human being. Also, through many hours of sending kindness, I’m finally able to say,” Oh well” during the moments I haven’t been able to even start anything. I know there is a reason, that’s it’s deeply personal, and usually it’s from my mind and body telling me it’s not the right time or place for whatever I thought I wanted or was ready to do.

I don’t think I can express just how beautiful this video is. In case anyone doesn’t realize it, this is perhaps the most elite-level ADHD-advice video many of us will ever have watched so far. This is ELITE. I can’t even express why this is a game-changer, but I can tell that it truly is. I am going to watch this like 10 times LOL. Seriously thank you, Caren.

This is great, thank you. I could be sailing along getting stuff done, then I crash. It's so demoralizing, and then I get depressed about it and curl up in the fetal position and sleep for days until I get the burst again. I can't really find the why now about it, so that it's able to control me.
@juulijabite26 күн бұрын
Something like that happens to me, too. The best solution I've found is managing the amount of stimulation you receive and avoiding overcommitment by allowing yourself to drop what's not a priority. Also make sure that you don't neglect checking in with your feelings.

I really like the advice about focusing on the processes you want before and after the goal rather than the goal. No point in achieving the goal if you're not going to like the new processes or processes aren't going to be sustainable after reaching it.

This is excellent advice for *anyone*, ADHD or not. But as a 60 ahem something who was recently diagnosed and now on meds, which have been game-changing, this approach makes so much sense to me personally. The piece about creating and following a process is especially helpful - I heard Eric Idle from Monty Python and the creator of “Spamalot” on Broadway say about bringing something to life, “It’s a process, not a miracle.” Although I’ve surprised myself with things I’ve accomplished despite years of ADHD issues, I’ve rarely had a process and have generally fought it! But now that I’ve learned what’s held me back, having processes actually sounds exciting and a relief - I’m exhausted from not having them, instead doing whatever I feel like or putting out fires constantly. Thanks for the wonderful advice, Caren!

This video came at just the right time. I’m just waiting on my late diagnosis at 52. I’ve spent year setting goals and always failing them. My systems were never sustainable, just fuelled by novelty until I ran out of steam, became overwhelmed and had to stop. This is the story of my life, rinse and repeat. I need 2025 to be different, not just for my sanity but also for my health. I’m the overeating ADHD type 😢. I got away with it when I was younger, but it’s really affecting my health now I’m in menopause. I’m going to be scouring all you videos to help me build a better process, one that I can sustain. Thank you for being here and making me feel less lost, and not like a failure. Happy new year ❤ Adele

Hey Caren, I found your advice on focusing on the process and not the goal to be immensely helpful, I think this is really a fundamental principle that every person with ADHD(inattentive, since that is me) ought to apply. To see yourself loving the process of achieving the goal rather than the goal itself. Breaking up the goal into short term processes and making it as frictionless as possible, on a day to day and week to week basis has been working out incredibly so far! got diagnosed an year ago at 22, but I wish someone were to tell me this as a kid, rather than just "DO DO DO DO"

Thank you - very sensible advice. My biggest gains have come from being as honest as I can about my own strengths and weaknesses, and adjusting my life accordingly. The advice on goals is great - having fixed goals can be very harmful, as it can be very soul destroying when you continuously fall short. Much better to focus on the process. Once you have a good set of habits and processes, you'll eventually meet your goals and objectives, even if not necessarily when you anticipate.

i did notice that when you plan ahead and follow thru it changes my habits and how i think.....the problem for is i have to keep planning in order for me not to bring back those bad habits.

Great video Caren! I don't have a diagnosed ADHD but am considered by my surrounding to be very typical for that kind of behaviour. Dunno really, I'm struggling daily to maintain routines within my business, musicianship and life in general. The thing is --> this very video is _so_ relatable to inconsistent guitar playing despite of the best wish to progress. I'm seeing this on almost every workshop I teach, it's 80% of people who complain about not being able to find the time, energy to practice, then blame it to all kinds of reasons that, in my mind, are only excuses. Sometimes it's hard to "wrap in" the tips that won't hurt their feelings or the picture of themselves they painted. So your 5 principles are fantastic inspiration to relate to guitar playing. I'll steel it and apply the best possible way. I might even make a video (will credit you 100% 🙂) about it ... Happy New Year!

Hi Caren, I am a subscriber from Korea. I know I have ADHD at 40 and am studying about myself. I get help with your videos. I understand with KZbin translation. I am interested in your Distortion Action program. I am not good at English. Is your program available to me? I can check your site by translating, but I am asking because I do not know how the program is.

When the goal is my focus, I am dissapointed when it is not "instantly" achieved. When I focus on process, I can be succesful daily. Yet the process is meant to move me to the goal, just not instantly.
