The trick is not just to write a lot, it's to write and then let writers you respect give you feedback, and then the hard part is being humble enough to listen to those people so that you can grow in your craft.

At first I found myself disagreeing with the hypothesis that creative people will find the first outlet they can see a human behind. I went into architecture and felt like I found it a bit later in my life, certainly after drawing or painting. Then I thought of all my parents' DIY projects and the copious amounts of HGTV I watched, even as a very young child. I could just be self-diagnosing as people often do with horoscopes or Myers-Briggs, but I think that hypothesis might hold a lot more water than I initially presumed.

I saw a video here from MylarMelodies in October of 2021, where he demoed the Eowave Quadrantid Swarm. It was a box that made techno. I was absolutely blown away - there was a person, and a machine, that could make this music. I had to try this. I didn't buy that machine (I bought others) and I mostly use Ableton, but I've spent all day today making Berlin Techno. Couldn't be happier. Just about everyone can be trained to do just about everything.

that's such a resonant perspective. the advice i always give younger writers is to do it as much as possible. whatever you'll learn from a writing class, you'll learn far more if you spent all that time trying & making mistakes
