It's interesting that many of these pairs of words can be combined to form new words. Probably the most common one is 多少. There is also 左右 ("approximately"). Another one I like is 上下. I think it is only used in 上下班 ("commute"). Perhaps there can be a sequel video about these kinds of words. The story of 东西 would certainly make an interesting item. :-)

dongxi supposedly has a mythic origin something like they asked the king and he said look west then they asked again he said look east and when they still couldn't find it he was surprised because all the THINGS from west to east were royal property. There's a basket in the myth somewhere. In fact xi 4 west nest are etymologically related in Chinese, and a basket holds things as a nest holds eggs. so i think that may also be the origin? Anyway it's a metaphor for "every THING under the sun from East to West".

It reminds me a lot about my native language, Dutch. We literally just glue words together to make a new one. English does that too, actually. Just not very often.

This is a very good way to expand vocabulary and also introduce idiomatic expressions. However, I think that for people learning Mandarin it will be more useful to have word-by-word Mandarin-English transliteration, not translation.

8 / 12 / 2018 good video , i suggested for others sites to make videos for opposite vocabulary but they did not . i hope you make it so repeat the chinese words twice if would make , so learners could study and if one word will forget the other word will come to memory and i think you know to learn tow words together is better , thanks ...

道 [dào] has many meanings, and here it means ‘the measure word of ( a question)’. 题[tí] means topic or question. 这(this)道题 = this question. Learn more about measure words in our channel: kzbin.info/door/SXriUqkzZmAQklQ0N9XFVwsearch?query=measure+words
或者 is normally used in a statement in which options are presented. e.g. 我明天去或者后天去。 还是 is usually used to provide choices or options when asking a question. e.g. 你喜欢喝茶还是咖啡? But you can also use还是 in a statement in below situations: 1.when you don’t know or aren’t sure about something, you should use 还是. e.g. 我不知道这本书是他的还是我的。 2.when you know something will not be changed no matter what happens. e.g. 无论刮风还是下雨,邮递员都会按时送信。

"组(zǔ)" means "group",so "第一组(dì yī zǔ)" means "group 1". We don't say “dì yī cì” in this situation. Thanks, Crystal
