Big Brother UK 2002 contained a really weird incident in the live feed, one night, which seemed to be buried without any further mention anywhere that I ever knew of. It was the first series to feature extensive live footage almost every night on Channel 4, as filler between around midnight up until 4 or 5am. This one particular night, there were a few housemates chatting in the garden. Whenever conversation became unsuitable for broadcast, usually for legal reasons, the sound would be cut and ambient outdoor noise would play. But this particular night, you could faintly hear the housemates talking beneath it. The live audio was leaking through the censor. Some 99% of it was indecipherable, but you could tell that it was heavy stuff from the sombre facial expressions. This went on for an extremely long time, maybe an hour or two. Then, some very stern apologies began to appear. There were various captions overlayed on the live feed, and also captions appearing during the ad breaks. The continuity announcer even chipped in with apologies. But they were all worded so seriously. I mean, gravely seriously. As though a severe crime had been committed. They didn't elude to what the apology was exactly for, but they referenced severely offensive material which may have inadvertently been audible. It always stuck with me, because it seemed like something major had happened. But then, nothing was ever mentioned of it ever again. The show was at its height of popularity, the media covered every little thing that happened on the show. Yet this just passed, nobody mentioned it, yet Channel 4 seemed freaked out that they had broadcast something awful. It was one of the strangest things I have ever seen on TV, yet it instantly disappeared without trace.

@@olivercharles2930 Actually, it's always happening, but it generally happens so gradually that it goes largely unnoticed. The volume of lost media is larger the further back in time you look for it...around 75% of films made in the 20s are lost. The same amount of TV from before 1970 is lost. In 50 years, most early internet material will be lost. There will always be archives which preserve a small amount of media for posterity, but those archives will also be lost to history eventually. Nothing is forever.

It's not like a game savefile you can delete and start a new one over and over again. ppl explaining what lost media is can be helpful bc not everyone defines lost media the same way. one of LLSuperSonicQ’s recent videos kinda touched on this- he mentioned how some ppl don’t consider things lost unless there’s next to no proof it even existed in the first place while others consider something lost media even if the missing part is only a couple frames or a single scene (like the scene from spongebob where squidward turns into a snail or the infamous dennō senshi porygon pokémon scene)

Tip for those working on the Eddie Retractorhead lost media search: When I was really young, I’d travel to Israel periodically(2010-2014). At night, the Nickelodeon channel would show old cartoons in English, so I’d stay up to watch them. I’m telling you all, Nickelodeon Israel SPAMMED the Eddie Retractorhead cartoons for a ton of nights. I probably seen all ten of those episodes, but I don’t remember that much about them. Somebody at Nickelodeon Israel or a potential Hebrew-speaking viewer still has them most likely

I don't know if children content tends to be forgotten easier, or people search for this type of lost media more often.
@Samuel-ct3kb
@Samuel-ct3kb 11 ай бұрын
i think it's both; people tend to want to seek out media from their childhood and kid's media is less respected so it's not going to be archived quite as well. there's also a common trend of people trying to find media that scared them as children, and those things tend to get covered up and banned fairly thoroughly if parents complain, making it even harder to find
@jules_2.0
@jules_2.0 8 ай бұрын
I agree. If media has a big impact on adults it is likely to be preserved by some of those adults, but content can easily have a large impact on children but no adult thinks to preserve it. So when the children grow up and think back to that weird media that impacted it might already be too late.

It might have been mentioned before, but the lost jumpscare commercial sounds a lot like the ad campaign for the adult swim show "The Heart She Holler" It was a bunch of innocuous stuff that would end with a screaming pale woman. What is worse, the ad campaign would insert the woman into random other commercials. Usually for like a single frame. It was essentially a guerilla ad campaign purpose built to cause stories like this. (I dont think it did well since Heart She Holler was mediocre and barely remembered.) To my knowledge the ads only ran on adult swim, but there's nothing saying they couldnt advertise on other channels. Especially adult oriented ones like TV Land in the middle of the night.

Since you mentioned Adult Swim, I'm wondering if maybe it was a signal mix up between two stations. See, there was a signal mix up between Cartoon Network and TCM (both owned by the same company) where a segment from a movie playing on TCM was accidentally playing on the CN station. Some of TV Land's sister stations are MTV and VH1, so I'm wondering if a more edgy or wild advert meant for one of those stations was presented on TV Land by mistake, and since it was so late at night, no one caught it.

This isn’t necessary my experience, but there’s one lost media that interests me, and there’s one lost media I’ve always wanted to talk about (I’ll separate it by number) 1. I’ll try to explain it the best I can, but I remember seeing someone commenting somewhere where they stated that they remembered a specific episode of road runner where it was revealed that the coyote that was chasing the road runner wasn’t the same one, and then he saw there were many of them. The reason why this one intrigued me is because it sounded familiar. I don’t have any memories of seeing this supposed episode, but for whatever reason, when I pictured the plot of this lost media episode, it felt familiar. Another thing too is that when I checked the replies, a couple of people either said they remembered seeing it, or they would say one of their parents/grandparents remembered seeing it themselves. 2. This personal one is somewhat related to KZbin. So you guys know the 10 hour loop videos? SpongeBob for example has these loop videos that would loop a small moment or a random moment. I remember watching the one about 10 hour electric zoo about 3-5 hours in, I remember the music just stopped, and I wondered why, checked, and then I saw that for a couple of seconds was a picture of smile dog (not the “distorted” one). What made it creepy is that I wasn’t expecting to see it and the fact that it just popped out of nowhere made me exit off of KZbin for a while. There was no jumpscare, no loud music/distortion of any sound, just silent for a couple of seconds (maybe about a minute?). Unfortunately the video is gone and no one can even find/reupload that specific video, but luckily a couple of people seem to remember it, but many people were scared of that specific part.

Something to note is a lot of advertisements/commercials make use of one-off, custom music created just for the video. When you Shazam it or search it up nothing appears. I can see 20 years into the future someone finding a recording and trying to discover who made the song. It will become “lost media” even though it technically always has been because it was just a one-off track probably produced by an unknown artist. Just something to point out.

We had to do a holahoop team game where we had to put the hoops over and under are teammates to move forward towards a button? I remember the 'winner' and a audience member could get slimed. Was really bummed about it. I also remembered we were chosen by the audience, but felt like they asked us to be a part of it and act like we were chose then. If you find the show, I need to see it as it was recorded. We had a male host who acted cheery, if sarcastic, then ignored everything when we were on 'break'. I remember I hated waiting. We even did a memory path maze game where we could win a ps2; I remember losing because the pad on the floor wouldn't light up, got told to ignore it, and lost. I remembered something when you started talking about "what's the matter with this picture?" It seems the same, but it's a computer application. I was able to access it during the early 2000s. The application asks you to find the lady in red because there's a certain small percentage of people who can see her, and asks us, the players, to turn the volume up. The background picture is of a dark bar, I don't know if my memory serves me right. After a few minutes, a white lady jumpscares in front of the screen. I remembered playing it with my siblings. Boy! We screamed hard when the jumpscare appeared. We weren't expecting that. It was our first jumpscare. I've been searching for that application in the internet and found nothing.

Everyone knows that is definitely not from the 90s, its probably from the mid 80s. The drums (especially the clap sound) resemble a Linn LM-1 or LinnDrum drum machine. I don't think its a commercial because I can faintly hear foley sounds (foot heel turns, on concrete, on rocks, etc). I'm guessing its from a coming of age movie or something from the 80s.

Holy shit seeing “My Bed Bugs” totally made me remember seeing it as a kid. I remember i would sometimes get bored of Nickelodeon and Disney so I would browse other kids show channels. I remember every so often seeing My Bed Bugs on Sprout (?) and being thoroughly horrified by it. Crazy to thing that some random thing from my childhood has become lost media.

24:26 I remember watching the Dinosaur Egg (the lost episode) episode when I was younger on the TBN channel (Trinity Brodcasting Network) I remember the egg looking similar to a Yoshi egg design except instead of white egg with green spots it was a beige colored egg and I belive green spots. But I also remember how all of the characters wanted to share a part of the egg and take turns with it and eventually the egg hatched. The odd thing though was that the station cut the episode earlier than expected, and I distinctly remember the camera zooming quickly on all of the characters faces in surprise and then the egg cracked and a golden glow appeared from the egg but I never saw what was inside the egg, I know the episode is titled “Dinosaur Egg” but I have no idea what type of Dinosaur or animal it was..don’t know why or how I remember it after all these years but its definitely one of those odd/distinct type memories anyone could have

lost media makes me sad for some reason - an experience we shall never experience again, maybe. I will mention there is *alot* more lost media from the really early days of cinema, and I would say the vast majority of films created from before the 1930s or 1940s are completely lost, without hope of re-discovery.

I think I recognize this track. It’s the middle of a TV show’s intro - I don’t remember that much about it, other than it was a sitcom. I remember hearing this track channel-surfing once when I was quite young - probably somewhere between 2003 and 2006. That would have been on Adelphia Cable somewhere near Buffalo, New York, meaning this was likely something internationally syndicated. I don’t think I ever watched a full episode of the show, but the part of the intro this was from had a young girl in a princess dress followed by a guy that looked like Taylor Lautner with a green buttondown shirt and spiky gelled hair. I think he was the love interest for the show’s main character, and that the next shot in the intro was a woman and him kissing.

The file date says it was recorded in 1999, according to the video. It could have been something that was syndicated for a few years. I think it was about hiding some kind of family secret - there was a young kid, a girl in her mid-teens, their mother, and a grandmother. (I don’t remember if there was a father, or if she was a single mom.) I think that the mom was a receptionist in an office, and that her teenage daughter was in high-school. I think the youngest kid was like 7, and would often cause shenanigans to ensue for the rest of the episode - I can remember tuning in to the channel and seeing her doing some silly nonsense to canned laughter. Like I said, I don’t think I ever watched a full episode of it. It was either on a channel next to one of the children’s channels on the cable box, or on a channel that had children’s programming on at a different time and family/teen programming on in the evening.

It was about you playing as Phineas to what I recall a kayak or a unique invention Phineas and Ferb made and you must rescue Candice who was on a log or being dragged away on a river, it functions similar to the Microsoft Edge Surf game you can play if your offline. The background was a rough river and some obstacles. The audio to what I recall was water and Candice screaming from time to time. It was only later that I watched this video and remembered a part of my early time in life. Too bad it's lost media now...

Controversial opinion, but I don’t think it’s accurate the say that most of these TV shows are ‘lost’. Since the 1960s, very very few TV shows are lost- they’re all carefully archived, just inaccessible to the public. We know they exist and where they’re stored. Sometimes tapes are wiped or destroyed but it’s very rare. It’s totally different to stuff like flash games or unreleased video games, or even obscure old commercials, which are potentially genuinely lost forever.

I have a lovely piece of lost media. A song I believe that would be titled “black sheep”. My dad was a musician, he recorded in abbey road studios in the UK. The demos they got were on vinyls which are grooved on one side and flat on the other, but one has a b-side. It was a song from another band that went unused or was rejected, which had scribbled marker over it, But the vinyl still plays in full. Haven’t been able to find anything about it though.

I vaguely remember a live action educational kids show that was available on the childrens section on Charter On Demand (now known as Spectrum) around late 2000s. The show itself however, by the looks of it, probably released in late 90s-early 2000s. The show was about a woman and some weird large troll(?) who lived in a garden. The woman had black wavy hair, overalls and a pink top underneath, and the troll(?) was a giant yellow puppet suit (similar to Barney) with green polka-dots (and possibly a large mane of hair.) The set of the show from what I remember took place only outside in a garden, which was decorated with a large hedge with leafy arches and large sunflowers and the background was a pinky cloudy sky that was obviously painted. None of my siblings, nor anyone on the internet I've asked so far, remembers this show. I'm unsure of what country it originated from, or what channel it could've aired on because I only ever watched it on Charter On Demand, I've even gone through TV guide archives on multiple childrens networks and haven't found anything similar.

This never happened again (as they changed the "popped" cable and it didn't have minimax) and that was my weird experience. Ever since I was a kid I’ve been into creepy PSAs/Commercials so the video I watched it from was either a compilation or someone commentating on it. As for what channel it was on I’m not entirely sure because this was years ago (in the mid 2010’s probably). I’m not sure how much this will help but if I am remembering it right it does actually exist and it very well may still be right here on KZbin.

Very interesting and well put together assortment of cases. I find this type of stuff fascinating. It's crazy to think about how many things are forever lost. I have a case of my own to share, actually. It's probably very obscure because it's about brazilian media. When I was a kid, in like 2010, I remember playing a lot of games on the internet, and one of them was a car driving one, made by a popular cookie (?) brand in Brazil, called Trakinas. It consisted in emulating the player getting their own driving license (with a quiz that you had to be successful on), and then letting them drive around the neighbourhood. You could lose your driving license if you broke too many driving rules, like honking near schools and hospitals, going through red traffic lights, etc etc. I remember the game vividly. I tried digging around to find anything about it on the internet in like 2020, but came across empty handed. Tried looking through the wayback machine, also, but I'm not sure if I simply lost my patience too soon, but nothing of significance would load. I think I managed to trace the game back to 2007 in the Trakinas website, but since it was a Flash game, I don't think the odds are in my favor. Still have hopes, though. I've never seen anyone else talking about it during my research, and I'd think I invented the whole thing, if it weren't for my sister playing it with me when we were kids, and corroborating with my memories when I brought it up. I had good times driving around the town! I'd love to revive them again someday. It's strange how things can just be lost for forever.

When you mentioned what Disney Channel Interactive was, it reminded me of stumbling across a channel on Bell satellite TV in Ontario at some point in the late 2000s-possibly early 2010s, but never knew what it was, and I don't even remember the specific channel number, although come to think of it there's a good chance it was channel 100, since this was around the time I was in kindergarten and could've easily found myself punching in a random number I liked onto the remote. My parents said it cost extra and told me to not do that again, and I don't remember trying it again after that day, where at most I might've played 1 or 2 games. Little did I know I was playing a game that there's a good chance I'll never see again.
