If you're under 60, you may not fully appreciate how much of an impact this song had when it was first released. After years of disco, it was so flabbergastingly different and stood out from all that stuff so profoundly that it's hard to describe.

OKAY! I started playing guitar in 1964 at eight years old. I thought by now, I had seen, or heard, or any combination of the two, when it comes to excellent guitar work, of every style, then I FOUND THIS!! Four guys, four different styles, four different guitar makers, and four TOP LEVEL TALENTS, combined into one...PERFECTION!! They chemistry between them, the smiles and nod's for each one's turn, the attention they pay to the other one playing, there is NO leader here, all equal in their ability. Most of all, you can tell that they REALLY ENJOY what they are doing! I can't help but SMILE through the entire performance.... over and over again! BRAVO 40 FINGERS!! I am SO GLAD I found you!!

Actually, that wonderful fill-in the rest of the song effect appears to be working with only 3 guitars. From about 3:00 onward, it appears and sounds like 4 guitars minus 1. The mic for the guy on the far right (audience viewpoint, far left on-stage setup) with the red jacket and red-finish guitar seems to have dropped out. His solo is barely audible, being picked up only by his fellow musicians' mics. Yes?

Just average everyday guitar players .Most pub bands can do this and more .Tommy Emanuel and his brother can do much better on only two guitars and Tommy could just about replicate this on his own .It's sad that the current generation are so deprived of real music that they think this is special I suppose that's the price we must pay for technology.

@@johnmilligan6605 These are not ‘average everyday guitar players’. I see what you’re trying to say, but I think you’re hugely exaggerating. These are objectively advanced guitar players. Heavy criticism in the comments. These guys did a great job. Mark Knopfler doesn't play it the same when he plays it live. He takes liberty to jam it. And that was the idea here. Of course, Mark's the king of Sultan's of Swing, and obviously there are some great renditions of the song that other people have done. I enjoy these as well. But thank you, 40 Fingers, for yours!
@arthurfranklin9315
@arthurfranklin9315 3 жыл бұрын
These guys did a fine job. I think the criticism comes exactly because this rendition sound so polished that people get suspicious. Listeners want to hear more individualism shining through in instrumental music. Not being familiar with this group, I think they'd benefit from a Paco de Lucia type that plays with his fingers to add another flavor.

Mark is def magical but that’s such a stupid comparison. This and the original are two completely different arrangements. These guys are playing what Mark plays but also his vocal lines and of course covering the rhythm guitar parts, which Knopfler both ain’t playing with his “10 fingers”. Mark is magical for his own sound/touch and songwriting, not because he could play things that would require 4 people to play…

You should watch the professor of rocks interview and video on that song! Mark Knopfler wrote it When he was a young musician hanging out in a dive bar in London town and there was a lowly jazz band playing Who called themselves the sultans of swing!! And The story of money for nothing is hilarious because Mark Knopfler was shopping for a TV and a tech store and basically just wrote down verbatim what two gentlemen were having a conversation about as they watched MTV play on the multiple TVs that were displayed! That’s why The unedited version has a bunch of Seemingly offensive language, because it was just a Verbatim transcribe of a conversation Between two regular people!

A few negative comments on here and it makes me wonder how many of these 'experts' are actually guitarists lol. The fact of the matter here is that they are not trying to be Mark Knopfler or Dire Straits, these are 4 excellent guitarists doing their thing acoustically, their own rendition of a great song from one of the the most unique guitarists the world has ever seen. Give these guys the respect they deserve. Oh and while we're on the subject of all these so called expert critics ( I use that term very loosely lol), proper muso's do not criticise other muso's, whatever level you're at we compliment each other and show respect and learn from each other. This was a fantastic performance, they look good, they sound good, they are great musicians and they all enjoyed themselves... and I'd put money on it that audiences everywhere would dig what they're doing. Unable to NOT comment here again! I start my work day at 4:30 AM, have always had "a" song, that had to be played, turned way up, headphones on! In the "old" days, we could only "hear" the songs, and that was okay. Now, we have KZbin! If I had to give up every possible form of entertainment except for one... goodbye TV, goodbye Radio, just give me KZbin!! Most of what I chose, was pretty LOUD, and ELECTRIC... to get me MOTIVATED... about a month ago... I watched this AMAZING CREATION! IT IS how I start my days now, every one of them, and it is the TOTAL experience here that makes everything else insignificant! First, the venue, how incredible, the camera angles, oh yeah, I have to ask, do you ask that the "brands" on your guitars NOT be obvious in your videos? It seems there is an effort to not show a good shot of those headstocks... allow me to continue... the non verbal communication between your 40 Fingers, is a joy to watch, the smiles... the head nods... you ARE CONNECTED to each other, on some kind of MAGICAL LEVEL! I SMILE through the entire performance, my cheeks get sore... but I am addicted, happily! I have watched almost every video by now, they are all AMAZING, but this one stands out as my favorite, closely followed by "Wish you were here" Pink Floyd. I want to know how to get the ENTIRE WORLD to experience what you give us, you are a true blessing to the WORLD, please keep doing what you are doing for ALL OF US!

Just makes me smile. That's what a great musical performance does. So sad that there isn't an audience applauding at the end. But I was.

So true! My first thought at the end of the song was 'wow, what a patient audience it is to only start applauding when all 24 strings rang out...' My heart got torn apart due to the absence of applause 😞

I was thinking the same thing. All through the video I kept looking for an audience in the wide shots. Must have been a strange feeling to play in front of so many empty seats. Hopefully, with the world slowly opening up that will change.

I’m not able to relate to the negative comments. This reimagining is the opposite of soulless. The love and respect for the original is joyfully obvious. Timeless melodies should be replayed and reinvented over and over again forever. If I were Mark Knoepfler this video would make me smile pretty big.
