The longer I study, the more I think Japanese shouldn't have dictionaries without example phrases. Thank you! And can anyone explain the use of かける in 掃除機をかける? Can you also say for example 洗濯機をかける? What about 車をかける?

Its always hard to know when to use に, で, or は... 夏は扇風機を使います almost feels like 'Summer uses a fan' rather than "I use a fan in summer". I understand why don't get me wrong, its just not intuitive to choose は when I am the subject. or に /で for the microwave.
@Grondhammar
@Grondhammar 10 ай бұрын
Totally agreed! に and で are very difficult. I tried so hard to find/generate rules, but it's just memorisation -- except that to get correct usage, you have to talk to/listen to native speakers because dictionaries just list the verb and don't give what shades of meaning the particles provide. The は/が distinction hung me up for six months until I finally let go of "every sentence has to have a subject" which is pounded into our English-speaking brains from day one.

Oh, that led to some fun research! Thanks for the prompt. I have always thought it curious that the kanji literally means "wood legs". It seems that つくえ originally referred to any flat surface held up with wooden legs (thus the kanji, 木 + 几). Starting in the mid 19-th century when Japan opened up to outside influences, テーブル came to serve exclusively as "a place to eat at", but 机 still retains its meaning of "any flat surface with legs". So it can be translated as dining table, or desk, or (Shinto) offering table, or even workbench, depending on the context.

5:50 - i came up with "母はソファで寝ます", is that technically valid too or does that sound weird?
@hollyhockgod
@hollyhockgod 10 ай бұрын
my guess: if you use 寝ます instead of 寝ています it might sound like she always sleeps there. Also, I suspect when talking about pieces of furniture, adding those の上 or の中 may become mandatory or at least important.

This vocabulary is very useful, but I would have prefered it without romaji. For the words alone, when you had such clear illustrations, the English words could have been omitted, and maybe just had them as subtitles as a choice. Maybe even the sentences? I find romaji prevents us to learn to read better kanas. Even though I am on a very low level, romaji is just in the way, because there's not enough time to read further. 🌷🌸🌺

Guys. We can pronounce テレビ with an "l" instead of an "r" more Japanese. 0:51 it writes "terebi" but I believe Tanaka せんせいの voice.
@JustKyzuuh
@JustKyzuuh 10 ай бұрын
It's similar to R for English speakers but our trypical R in english has more of an URRR to it. I liken the Japanese and even Spanish R to more of a D sound, so テレビ is close to te-de-bi but there is a slight drag of the tongue on the roof of the mouth that is similar to the R sound in English, it's just done quickly enough that it feels more like a D. This is just my opinion/interpretation though but maybe it can help someone
