They both performed well. I would opt for the 165gr. It's the sweet spot for 40sw.

For a number of years, my agency issued the 180gr Ranger T for our Beretta 96's and then Glocks. We had a few officer involved shootings with the Ranger T and in one of the instances, I was the officer who fired. In every instance, the Ranger T did exactly what it was supposed to do with the round performing exceptionally well. Now that I have retired, the few times when I carry a .40, it's loaded with either the Ranger T or the HST. Excellent work as usual, Az.

I picked up a S&W 411 at a garage sale for 300dollars. As I walking away the LADY said stop. This goes with it. A 50cal can. Inside was 100 FMJ'S and 10 boxes of 180gr black Talons. OH YEAH

The 180 grain was what my agency issued for duty carry. I worked many officer involved shooting incidents, including autopsies. The Department switched to the Remington 180 grain for a cycle (low bid I’m sure) and it had a huge hollow point cavity. They failed to perform on numerous occasions, mostly because of poor penetration. The two rounds that never failed to perform were the Winchester 180 grain and the Federal 180 grain HST. Both were excellent, and I would carry nothing else. Just my opinion, based on what I was able to see during the after incident investigations.

In an In Service class, Winchester was selected to replace the Federal 124 grain Hydrashok +P+. The County selected the Winchester 124 grain SXT +P which was an impressive load. Later on Glock offered a great deal to replace the Gen 3 Glock 19 with Gen 4 Glock 23. The Department selected the 180 grain Remington Golden Saber. The 165 Winchester T Series is my preferred load in the Glock 27. The joke was, The Black Talon was replaced by the SXT. The Same Exact Thing.

Good test, AZ! These Ranger, aka Black Talon V2, have a good rep for good reason! While I personally like to see a bit more penetration, especially from the 180, they ain't bad at all! I'd also like to see a bit more velocity from the 165 but I can why they don't since penetration might suffer. This would require a somewhat stronger construction from the bullet, which is why I prefer the Speer Gold Dot, but in my own handloads since Speer doesn't exactly push the limits even a little! In most cases I prefer my hand loads over factory for just that reason. Not to mention I know with 100% certainty that my own loads are assembled correctly and that they will go bang every time. The only factory ammo I carry is the Underwood loading of the Lehigh Extreme Defenders, since I simply can't match their velocities. That's a first for me, too. When all is said and done the Ranger-T definitly isn't a bad thing to carry around. It will definitely get the job done! Cheers, jc

Just for a go 2:00 to round those are superb,these beat every other 40 in lucky gunner test and the push deep ,the sectional density of the 180 makes it nearly perfect although less energy .Cor Bon used to make a 180 gr dot that would hit 1075 or more in duty gun.

It’s crazy how I always see people who actually do ballistic tests like really do them all the time with numerous calibers and different type of ammo they always seem to be a fan of .40 Cal…. That alone should suggest the whole 9mm vs .40 shouldn’t be a argument. .40 is a better round more power larger wound cavity more energy dump etc…. And this is why ima always go with .40…9 mil gets the job done of course but .40 GETS THE JOB DONE. Iykyk

Both provide a great impact damage and wound. It didn't have as deep of penetration as some may desire but it makes up for it in expansion and talon tearing. I didn't pick up if you observed more damage with one over the other. The stills seem to indicate a bit more impact damage with the 180. That surprised me if so. Either are great options. Thank you.
@AzAirgunner.Ай бұрын
@@guardianminifarm8005 Yes sorry, when doing the cross sections I actually noticed that the 180gr had wider damage at the beginning of the track than the 165gr, but the 165gr had a longed damage path before settling down.
