It's week 40, finally! Your baby, who's now the size of a pumpkin, could weigh between 6 and 9 pounds and measure anywhere between 19 and 22 inches long, though some perfectly healthy babies check in slightly smaller or larger than that. A wide range, true, but that's because babies, like their parents, come in all sizes. What package will your baby come in? It's hard to say for sure until delivery day, and even your provider's guesstimates can be way off the final mark.
Your little miracle is now fully loaded with fully-functioning organs, bodily systems and reflexes and is ready to start life outside your uterus. When you do meet your new arrival, be sure to say hello and more. Though it will be your first face-to-face, your baby will recognize the sound of both parents' voices.
So how will you know when it's finally showtime? First, you'll probably have bloody show, pink or streaky red mucus that signals that your cervix is effacing and dilating and that labor's likely a day or so away, not to be confused with the gelatinous mucus plug, which you may have lost up to a month ahead of delivery. Then, you'll have contractions and you'll know they're the real deal because they'll be more regular than Braxton Hicks. They'll get stronger over time and they won't ease up, even when you change positions.
Just don't expect your water to break with one big gush before contractions start like it does in the movies. Only about 1 in 10 moms experience a rupture of the membranes before labor begins. For most, it's more of a slow, steady drip of liquid that comes after contractions are under way. So how will you know if it's your water breaking or if you just peed yourself again? Take a sniff: Your nose will know.
