My favorite book for at least half of my life was a book by Robert McCammon Swan Song. Then I discovered reading Nat'l. & Internat'l. best sellers. That worked for awhile. I have so many favorites. Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series. She had that out ten years before it went viral. Now I need at least 800 pgs. or an epic. I have my authors too: Edward Rutherfurd; just so many. I remember my stories that I read. I know my authors that I read.

The magic of audiobooks: started a month and a half ago, now on book 11 🤐 I can't imagine other than bingeing it! There's so many names and characters I would be so lost if I took it any slower! Although the books kind of do blend into one at this speed, I would not be able to tell you what happened in which one except for the first few. I guess reading is quite different from listening though

Who that is a avid reader has not sat and read an entire book in a day or at least half. I waited patiently year after year for the next book in this series to come out. And when the books would release i would often binge read through the entire book or most of it if i couldn't possibly finish in a single sitting. 44 pages a day is childs stuff. Really no reason you couldn't do 44 a day just to experience the series.

Actually, I would rather see another series covering the 4th age. Don't start right after the events of this series, either. Start with the birth of the next dragon, then give hints about what happened and let us piece it together. After several books of that, maybe give us a shorter book that actually covers the time properly, along with a surprising twist or two.

I feel like this is/was just the best way to read the series. I bought it and read it in 3 weeks this year(Jan) and read 1-6 a book a day, 12-15 a book a day... but 7-11(not all of 11) felt like a chore more often than I would have liked. Throughout all 15 book there is so much reading the same phrases over and over. An amazing read and amazing series but, I don't know if I could ever do a re-read.

Mike, thank you very much for your book-by-book reviews. I started reading WoT for the first time in February this year. I was reading a book a week for the first 7 or 8 books. My pace has slowed a bit, because I needed a break. I started Knife of Dreams last week and I have renewed excitement for finishing the series. I’ve really enjoyed watching your reviews after I finished each book. We share certain storyline frustrations. But, like you, I sure wish people would stop talking about “the slog”. It set can set up a negative mindset for first time readers. Other than that...congratulations on finishing WoT, for having a great KZbin channel, and not least of all...for completing your Bachelor’s degree!

I loved the journey you went through & I always like watching ‘newbies’ having the experience of this series/world. I read the series as it was being published so internet wasn’t really anything to shout about, KZbin definitely didn’t exist till the end of the series, so interacting with new readers was very difficult. Other than convincing my brother, some friends, my dad, some work colleagues and even some friends children to read the series and seeing their reaction. Im a believer in starting and finishing a series with no breaks (unless your waiting for a book to come out) I like to completely immerse in one world. One of my favorite series - I started it in the mid-90's, and after reading what had already been written, eagerly awaited each new installment. When Robert Jordan died before finishing the last book, I was crushed - until I learned that he had made extensive notes and Brandon Sanderson would complete the series. I will say it had made me leery of starting large series before they are complete ;-)

Great video! Always good to hear others opinion about this great series. I remember waiting for the books when Robert Jordan passed away and wondering if the series would ever be finished. So thankful Brandon Sanderson was able to complete it. My fav series are obviously LOTR, Wheel of Time, Shannara books, Raymond E Feist and the Riftwar saga, Terry Brooks and The Sword of Truth books, and finally the Eddings book series, The Belgariad and The Malloreon. I'm glad you enjoyed and loved the books, and envy you reading it for the first time :)

@@mikesbookreviews Thanks. I just noted that you were a huge Dune fan, and I just finished Dune Messiah. I have the first 3 books in one book. I guess I'll finish Children of Dune because I want to finish the book but I haven't really gotten into the series so far. I found the first book much better than the second. Should I continue on with all 6, should I stop already now because it's not going to become better, or should I stop after children of dune? If it helps I've watched the mini-series with James McAvoy (not sure if that's based on Children of Dune or somthing later, but the names matched up with the names of the twins at the end of Dune Messiah). Thanks for any guidence here. I have some new Brandon Sanderson I would like to get back to as soon as possible but first I need to make a decision on this :)

I'm recently halfway through Lord of Chaos. I've started to read the series nearly 25 years ago and stopped reading after RJ died. I bought the last books when they were released, gut was thinking I might have gotten to far away from the stuff. I was always planning to com back to it. The Amazon announcement gave me the push I needed to say no to any other book for about a year. And I don't regret it. It is like coming home to old friends. What has taken me so long. The Journey! You point out very well that the ups and downs of this series is part of the appeal. It is immersive. My own journey started right after the 3rd or 4th book came out. My journey took 20 years! Imagine spending that long with a single story front and center in your literary world. Sure. I read tons of other stuff during that time. But each new release spawned a new recap of the previous materiel. Some of which were merely a quick skim, and others being a full on re-read from the beginning. 20 years in a continuous refreshment loop! It was glorious, unrepeatable, and irreplaceable!

I started reading scifi in the early 70's and fantasy, specifically Lord of the Rings, a few years later. I've read a fair number of different things and a few (Dune, Lord of the Rings) many times, Wheel of Time became my favorite and remains so by a wide margin. I continue to re-read or listen to audio books and have been through it a dozen times. In many ways, this is the greatest story ever told.

I hate the fear mongering over "the slog", but man alive... Just finished book 8 on my reread and it feels like the chapters are getting longer and longer. I like to read a chapter or two at a time but I'm finding myself putting the book down if/when the pov changes mid-chapter instead. Maybe I'm slowing down due to fatigue but when I started book 9 this morning my Kindle said the prologue was going to be 2hr 5 min.

*Edit:* Chapter 37 of A Memory of Light is nine hours and four minutes long in audio form. One chapter. Discussed here: www.reddit.com/r/danielgreene/comments/gb1v63/this_chapters_existance_turn_audibles_entire_user/ *End Edit.* I've seen it claimed there's a chapter (as in ONE chapter) in one of the audiobooks that is over nine hours long. Yep. A chapter in a book longer than many novels. (IIRC it is in one of the final books, which I've not gotten to yet.)

I'm on a reread myself and after reading the first book Sanderson did I found myself wishing he'd gotten the reigns much earlier. He tightened things up so much. It really was a hot mess. I blame Jordan's editor for many of the problems though. The pacing, unreal characters, entire plot lines that could have been skipped, excessive descriptions and repetitions of things... just things an editor should have been there to correct but it didn't happen. Which is a shame. The story has "masterpiece" potential but it got meh level results in way too many places.

Congratulations! I have enjoyed watching your journey. The videos have been great. I picked up the series as a teenager, when book 5 or 6 had just come out. I spent my precious money earned from my first job to buy them. But life happened; college, marriage, children with special needs, and near the end of The Slog I just couldn't get up the emotional energy to finish. My husband did, we own the books. Thanks to your videos, I have finally gathered up the courage to start over and go to the end. And like you said, I can take my time and take breaks. So, again, thank you. Can't wait to see what you do next.

Looking forward to the TV series . That will make four distinct ways to enjoy this book journey. I had previously read the books as they came out, then listened to the audiobooks. Each was a distinct experience. Mike , I would add your book summaries as a third and distinct adventure, kind of like a theme park ride. Imagine Disneyland's Pirates of the Carribean, only as several different rides with new settings. Your take on classic themes from LOTR and Dune have created new "weaves in the pattern" for me. Thanks for all of the perseverance with finishing the books and tolerance with the fandom and our strong opinions .
