Wow very powerful statement "Genetics loads the gun, environment pulls the trigger"
@daviniarobbins92983 жыл бұрын
I heard it as genetics loads the gun but lifestyle pulls the trigger. In my opinion I don't buy this genetics theory. Back in the 70s and 80s here in the UK you might have one overweight child in the entire year two tops and that was it. Now you are probably looking at well over half of that year as overweight and or obese. It is probably more due to the fact there are much more fast food places available. And more expensive healthy food. It is not cheap to live a healthy diet. Plus the fresh fruit and veg goes off quicker and course supermarkets don't sell it in small quantities and you can't eat it all in the 2 or 3 days it will keep so you end up throwing 1/3rd to a half in the bin.

I don’t understand how in these kind of shows it’s always presented as if there’s only two alternatives: taking this life or death risk operation, or going on living enormously overweight. There actually IS this third alternative: changing your life and losing a significant amount of weight with a reasonable way of eating, moving, and psychotherapy to face the underlying causes of overeating and develop new healthier ways of coping with emotion. Especially in such a young age, I’m sure there must be something he (or his parents) have not tried yet. I’m glad everything went fine for him, but if it was my minor child, I would try everything under the sun before taking this extreme operation. Has he ever been to a hospital for several weeks, with a controlled diet and sports program suitable for his weight? Did he get educated about nutrition and the amount his body needs in a day? Has he ever tried talking about his past (bullying) and disordered eating habits to a professional psychotherapist?

Losing weight by your 3rd alternative is the hardest of the 3. I was in the hospital for 3 weeks under a doctor's supervision and it's easy while you are in the hospital. It's not so easy when you have to face reality by yourself. Have you ever been obese? It doesn't sound like it to me.

Stop blaming the parents. He was not a toddler completely dependent on them. We all just do the best we can. Sometimes our best isn't enough. They got him the help he needed. That's what counts.
@ampa49893 жыл бұрын
@MrJre4491 And then he grew up. He kept getting fatter. Do you know how heartbreaking it is to see a hungry child? When my son was a baby, we used to take long walks. One day, he suddenly became hungry. I wasn't nursing him anymore and we were in the middle of a park, about fifteen minutes from the town center where we could get some food. He cried so hysterically. It is a distinct cry, different from when a baby is tired, cranky or sick. It's like frantic desperation. My husband and I became so alarmed, we didn't even go to a restaurant. We went straight to the grocery store and started feeding him before we even paid. He ate like he hadn't been fed in days even though he had eaten maybe two hours earlier. It might have been a growth spurt. And we remarked how wrenching it must be for mothers in impoverished nations or in the days of yore. Think of living with that. They didn't feed him because they were lazy. Their other kids were normal. Hunger is a primal drive. It must have been very, very difficult for his parents even when he was a child. Try to think through some things before going with your gut feelings.

No, I'll blame the parents. They did right by him by getting him the surgery but if any child is obese the parents are failing.
@cee-emm3 жыл бұрын
Why wouldn't you blame them? It's literally what they allowed him to eat and how he developed his eating habits when he was a toddler.
@dmpg19943 жыл бұрын
@@ampa4989 It's called parenting. If he had eaten two hours earlier he wasn't physically hungry unless you gave food without nutrients. If humans eat real food their bodies know what to do with it. Im 33 weeks pregnant and I've done mountains of research on what to feed my son. The only sugar he's eating will come from fruit, and we will not have nutrient devoid or inflammatory food in our house, like corn/soy products or processed foods. As for your story you can cry me a river. I've helped raise a few kids and you don't give them what they want because they cry. If my parents did that when I was kid I would be obese myself. Often times the best thing you can say to a kid is "no". If a kid is obese it's the parents fault and that's abuse. Also you say he grew up and kept getting fatter, he was 16 when this was filmed and still under his parents control.

After you eat, it takes about six to eight hours for food to pass through your stomach and small intestine. Food then enters your large intestine (colon) for further digestion, absorption of water and, finally, elimination of undigested food. It takes about 36 hours for food to move through the entire colon.👍

I grew up in NJ wit Jewish and Italian people. A lot of dark haired, very pretty, tiny females. Only a few boys were taller in a school of 1000 students. I had no friends, never had a date. Spent my whole childhood in my room with food. Even my parents laughed at me. But I grew up, became a nurse and lost 6o lbs and kept it off until I had children. This kid should have been in sports & been active in daily physical exercise as young kid which can really help offset a lot of fat, weight and higher calorie intake It's also great tfor your mind, body & soul and instilling those habits as a child is really good & fundamental! I know that the show is saying that the parents changed his diet & feed him Healthy foods but then a few minutes later he's saying how he ate 2,3 & 4 portions and he's going Out to eat that's where the parents have to say No and when money is in a factor because for someone like Me & Many Others who grew up poor we didn't go out to fast food everyday or every week (It was Once a Month as a Little treat)and there was a limited amount of food in the house cuz we were on food stamps, so I couldn't eat up everything but My Mom didn't buy a lot of Junk Food or Over Feed Me! Our body becomes accustomed to the amount you eat whether that's a small amount or exorbitant amounts & it's hard to break away from that habit as you grow up- That's not say that I completely blame the parents because as the doctor explains some people genetically do put on more weight easily and some people are going to naturally be a little bigger but he never needed to get that large and his parents should have intervened sooner and cut back his eating and increase his physical activity when he was really young because you have to watch how large your child is getting and when you notice that early on you have to make changes like Saying No, not allowing him to have Seconds, Thirds & Fourth Helpings & not allowing him to go out to eat because now this kid is suffering for many years I'm not sure where he is in 2020 because this is an old show I pray he's doing much better

Yeah these parents are totally voiding themselves of responsibility and blame everyone else. Yet, Brandon blames himself for eating big and emotionally. These parents are like parents today who don't tell their kids no and they grow up into entitled jerks.

Public health for all! In Australia and most wealthy countries medical expenses are covered in a public system. People should not have to suffer and live with fixable medical conditions.
@paulasch83253 жыл бұрын
Canada is no different, especially once retired the real expenses are not covered by any healthcare plan available for those not working ( anymore). In Europe (now) one has to pay for all kinds of different healthcare cost, and all have co-pay; a far cry from the 70's and 80's. Unable to pay co-pay no healthcare if one is not a refugee.

Bariatric surgery pays for itself. It should be freely and quickly available to everyone. Why? Think about how much money is saved on drugs, other surgeries, hours of doctors, nurses and staff. I had it aged 45 and it saved my life. I went from 169 kilos to 120 kilos. I struggle but I keep it off mostly. I'm 65 and lockdown isn't helping!
@neighbourhoodwitch183 жыл бұрын
Meir Wise Shaw Somers, the bariatric surgeon here in the UK, says exactly that. I never had a weight problem until lockdown started in 2020! Getting back to work soon so hoping to get the extra weight gained from sheer laziness off! I'm blaming nobody but myself! Hope you manage too 😊🙄

White US-Americans, who are only a small handfull of generation away from Europeans, are the best example that genetics are not the reason for extreme obesity. Genetics don't change rapidly in 200 years. Yet, we see rapid differences between obesity in US Americans and Europeans. Genetics only acount for small differences in resting metabolic rate. US Americans are famous for their excessive reliance on cars, yet the average US American eats 3800 kcal.

I wish the diet and exercise came before the surgery... as a dietitian I could tell he was on yo yo diets most of his life. He was taking second and third helpings of food. And only post surgery he really took a hold on his better lifestyle. This is something that should've been suggested to him and his parents before putting him through a life threatening situation...

No joke, I feel like taller guys who are heavier in high school don’t get bullied as much if they look like him. Because I remember so many guys who looked just like him and who were in friend groups and who weren’t bullies. Maybe it’s just in Sweden, but I can’t imagine him being so isolated if he pretended to be confident and garnered a friend group.🤷🏻♂️
@autumnh50272 жыл бұрын
yeah, for sure. i feel like the bullying might have been exaggerated. he probably just got called big every now and then, and clearly had friends. it would be different if a girl was his size
@zuzu68642 жыл бұрын
For sure, here bullying isn't really a big thing, but him being that tall and big woundn't be a problem. In fact, those kinds of guys usually could throw a person across the hall in a heartbeat, so they're feared more than anything else, so no one dares to bully them. It'd be a different story if he was shorter, though

My son is 11 and weighs the same as this teenager at the beginning. He also has the same medical conditions minus the diabetes. We are waiting to hear back about the gastric bypass procedure here in michigan. I'm now doubtful if a positive response being my son is much younger. I am so sad for this. He has also gone through the testing and nothing shows up for why he is so big. Please pray for him and help us! He has been to dieticians and so many things. We got rid of all junk food.
