.400 Whelen - Feeding Issues Resolved???

This is super coo! I know the frustrations of feeding! This would be a bullet caster's dream cartridge. I'm considering this, the 375 Improved, or the 35 Improved.

Maybe this is covered elsewhere, but my thought is the obvious one: the real G&H .400 Whelen, designed by Whelen himself, has a .458 shoulder and not .441 of the .30-06 that everyone assumed until Petrov dug into the history of the cartridge. So, if you build a real .400 on a .30-06 rifle then… Anyway, I’m glad you worked it out, fixing bolt action feeding problems must be a real art and I ‘m guessing that there’s no book or you tube video to help out.

Ah, I see all of this is covered. Sorry for wasting space. PS, I have Elmer Keith’s 1936 book on rifles and cartridges for big game - a real fan of the .400 Whelen.

Didn't Elmer Keith use wtc bullets 🤔..I believe you used his 400 to do a dubble kill on mule deer.

I believe he did use 350 GR WTC bullets. Not sure on the double kill but no doubt it is very possible

Often wondered about the feeding about the 400 Whelan. I wonder if using an Winchester 1895 would be an easier feed mechanism.

Certainly possible. I have ran .400 rounds through a bunch of actions since I started this project. Seems to be hit and miss. The one that ran them best was an old military 98 Mauser rebarreled to .35 Whelen.

Have you tried the Hornady 400gr .410" bullet in your .400? If so, how did it do?

Sir, I have a question for you. I have been a big fan of double-barreled shotguns for all of my life. I know that in some instances, it has become necessary to resleeve the barrels on certain shotguns. Well, why couldn't i resleeve both barrels into 400 Whelen? It would elininate the feeding problem. It would also give the shooter two fast shots, every time. I guess there are other problems that I would encounter, but at least it would be an interesting build.

That would be an interesting build. Would be curious to see if you could get someone to take on the project. Seems doable.
