How to make a 4000 watt Universal motor speed controller at home. This video contains full circuit diagram and step by step procedure for you to better understand & actually make it.
It's a transistor based circuit involving the voltage divider technique for smooth output voltage control and for this very reason it can not only be used for Universal Motors but also your DC Motors, light dimmers and charging your batteries.
You can easily set the output voltage according to the requirement of your battery and then charge it safely. Full demonstration of all that has been provided in the video. Remember that the more the number of transistors in parallel, more will be the power rating of the circuit. . Maximum current handling capability of this circuit is 36 amperes since I've used three transistors with 12 amps each, together making it 36 amps.
The maximum voltage handling capability is 400 volts which makes the circuit really powerful.
Although there is one Glitch. The maximum power dissipation capability of each transistor is 100 watts making it in total 300 Watts and beyond that the circuit will get damaged.

Once off, those motors are generating power that's feeding back into your transistors. I would suggest that the proper diode on your output would provide some protection, significantly prolonging reliability and operational lifetime - thanks for the video!

That circuit will burn if you use it at half power and actually use the motor. It needs to be pwm switched or else it wastes a ton of power as heat. All you made was a variable resistor... sure it "works" but it is potentially unreliable and wastes lots of power...

In reality, it does NOT work on the A/C motors. That's why he kept raising the speed, instead of stopping in between anywhere. That's because it WON'T stop at a lower speed, it will "run away".

Question: the diagram says that you must connect the capacitor in parallel respecting the polarity at the regulator output, but in the video you connect it by reversing the polarity ... why?

1:30 you asked: okay, use that center hole where the impeller is, and place about a 6 inch funnel facing it, narrow side into hole. Put all this behind your grinder wheel, and attach the motor wires to the grinder switch. So, when you switch on the grinder, the vac sucks from the funnel end, into vac and into a hose into shop bucket, with cloth over top. I also use microwave oven magnets, on the grinder shroud, to attract filings. Njoy your creations, thankyou too much.

As far as I can see that is not a speed controller but a torque controller which is not the same issue. As the output is taken from the collector of the transistors, then the unit is a current source with a high impedance output and not a voltage source with a low impedance output, hence it is a torque controller. If the output was taken from the emitter as in an emitter follower, then the unit would be a voltage source and hence it would be a speed controller where the voltage of the source would be balanced by the back emf of the motors. That is what we mean by speed controllers. The input voltage comes from a low impedance source, hence a voltage source must be balanced by the back emf of the motors being used. The sound suggests it is a current source controlling the torque. If those motors were fed from a voltage source the acceleration would be much faster. One should be careful when using a transistor as a current source and using it as a voltage source.

This circuit controls voltage value to power universal motors. If you use this for power tools, you will loose torque for sure.

it should be encased safely in non conducting casing and pot knob also needs to be plastic encased to prevent fatal electric shock in case of failure

But this will harm ur motor. It is not design for brush motor. It will create alot of amp when the voltage is reduce n burn ur motor. It can be use for brushless motor.

Unfortunately, this video demonstrates how to handle mains voltage in a very unsafe manner. It doesn't appear like you have a lot of electrical experience, and not knowing exactly what you're doing when handling main voltage could literally kill you. This video should be taken down.

@@dkdanis1340 it's not requiring anything digital that needs it's own power to power a motor eating into the power consumption which is not ideal for an electric car as it creates a bottleneck in performance and range. Besides it's something entirely else than what everything is transforming into in the present.

Controllers cant ve done like this. You need Kore complicated circuits. For Kore efficient and simple ones, look for NE555 SPEED CONTROLL circuits

this circuit just works in short period of time due transistor thermal overrun.

Yes not very efficient , using a transistor in the non saturated mode is transferring a lot of power into heat, yes you have a large heat sink. Using PWM would allow transistors to fully saturate , Mosfets would be even higher efficiency .

This type of drive concerns direct current motors. Universal motors are series magnetic excitation motors that can operate in direct or alternating current (motors that have the annoying habit of racing at low loads). Brushless motors are synchronous AC (three-phase) motors, this type of drive is not suitable.

Hello, what is that type of capacitor called and where can they be found? Is it electrolytic? What if it was positive? On the other hand, is the fourth transistor the same as the other three? The potentiometers that I have reduce the speed but little by little the engine is increasing its revolutions by itself and I want to try the one you explain if this does not happen. Here the transistors operate in variable resistance, they will heat up very quickly and the overall behavior will not be very stable (maybe your problem). This is not the right method for this type of application. A PWM command (see wikipedia) would be much more efficient. The capacitor is of the electrolytic type. Be aware of the danger of voltages greater than 50 V AC, 100 V DC.

Thanks for your reply. The fourth transistor is the same as the other three. And another question: why regulating the speed of a motor every time it takes more speed on its own, that is, you regulate at one speed but the motor is taking more revolutions, it does not stay at the regulated speed of rotation.

An alternator is a synchronous machine with alternating current, it is compulsory to have a frequency converter to control this type of machine as a motor. Car alternators have diodes that convert alternating current to direct current to power the car (unless yours is of a very different technology). In addition, they have an auxiliary magnetic excitation circuit that must be supplied in alternator mode but also in engine mode.

Half a million people were deceived (I mean the text about 4000 W)...Perhaps it will be a revelation for you, but a 500 kW motor can be spinned up from a household power supply, only it will not generate operating torque, and therefore all energy will go only for the rotation of the rotor; any load will cause an emergency power outage... Try to put a load on the shaft in this circuit, or even more so, stop it; you will see a bluish smoke appear from the depths of the transistors))

Do you have a link to DC brushed or brushless diy controller that's not expensive to build. I want to put an electric motor with flex shaft on a kayak, and be able to control speed somehow ....the brushed and brushless controllers I have found that will handle aprx 500-750w motors are very expensive. Y otra pregunta: por qué regulando la velocidad de un motor cada vez coje más velocidad el solo, es decir, tu regulas a una velocidad pero el motor va cogiendo mas revoluciones, no se queda a la velocidad de rotación regulada.
