Thank you for the feedback! It's hard to find relatable info on this, since built motors wear differently with the different metals, and higher powered motors wear differently from stock obviously. I'm interested in seeing how long it will go before it needs rings/bearings. Hopefully I can keep stacking the miles on.

Hey, I followed your video's instructions for changing my timing belt and water pump and stuff on my 1995 Miata a few years ago. Just a couple months ago I found out that I didn't tighten the crankshaft bolt enough, and the keyway was damaged and the shop where I took the car said the timing had jumped and they had to change the whole crankshaft and rebuild the engine and my car was pretty much done. They ended up doing the epoxy fix, so my car is running again, but I wanted to make people aware of this potential problem. Use a torque wrench.

I didn't actually learn anything, but I hit the button anyway. Enjoy the endorphins. I DID actually learn something about building race engines yesterday that I didn't already know. The more I learn the more I realise that there are SO many things to think about while building an engine and its best to just do what someone else has done and not be a pioneer. Which is the exact opposite to the way I usually approach a build.

Is it better to have long tubes from the head to the turbo flange or short ones? I think that long ones will be less likely to crack because it has more pipe to flex, but will that make spool slower?
@TheCarPassionChannel3 жыл бұрын
From what Abe at Artech Fab told me, longer runners will have a slight reduction in transient response but offer better top end power. I worry about the long tubes cracking more easily, because the weight of the turbo has more leverage against them

Those marks on the side could be caused by piston slap when cold? Have you found that noticeable when it’s cold? I am interested because I am planning my VVT Turbo build and want to know what forged pistons are like to actually use. Also did you use Inconel studs on the hot side? You are still going to be lapping all those exhaust valves again! I am planning on teaching my son that so I can get him to do it lol.
@TheCarPassionChannel3 жыл бұрын
That's actually the main reason I went with Supertechs instead of Wisecos; I'm not sure how true it is but from the research I did, Wisecos supposedly are made out of an alloy that contracts slightly more when cold, so they slap more than the ST's. I figured even if it was complete internet lore I wouldn't have issues regardless of which piston I went with. On my motor I don't hear any slap at all on cold starts, but also keep in mind that my "coldest" starts are about 50F

Is it the revs you’re pulling that lunched the valves? How much gain is there over 7500? Looks pretty solid for how much abuse it’s seen
@TheCarPassionChannel3 жыл бұрын
Boost pressure is a big factor as well, as increased manifold pressure is pushing against the valves, making it harder for them to close and seat. It's not something I thought about much before the build, I thought a mild valve spring upgrade would be enough, but maybe not. It's possible the seat pressure was too low as well. My limiter is at 7700, the engine is still making 300wtq @ 7100, falling to around 260wtq by 7600 or so then rapidly falling off. Usually I only rev to 7200-7400 during a pull, but I use those extra revs in the canyons to avoid an upshift

No manifold relief cuts? Calipers are not very accurate, even if they are a good brand. No matter how well they are made they will flex and lie. If I ever needed more than +/-0.0015 accuracy I found a mic. Check out telescoping bore gauges. For cheap you should be able to check cylinder bores yourself to tenths accuracy, plus a mic of the right size to check pistons.
@TheCarPassionChannel3 жыл бұрын
I have a full mic set and bore gauge setup as well. Unfortunately for measuring the valve installed height in a Miata engine you can't use either of those

13K miles doesn't seem like much at all on Miata engine. My stock 99 has 235 and still going so how much of a difference is a modified 400 HP Miata going to damage an engine after only 13k vs a stock engine?
@TheCarPassionChannel3 жыл бұрын
It's not only the power, but the metals used are different too, any time a softer or harder metal is used it's going to change the wear characteristics. How long a factory Mazda built engine will last vs a forged/high power build is apples to oranges. That being said this thing has plenty of life left, hoping to see 30-40k out of it
@ZacharySound3 жыл бұрын
@@TheCarPassionChannel That is intersting to know. When you say type of metal used are you referring to forged pistons or something on the modified engine? It sounds like a a stock vs modified Miata engine the miles put on a stock engine are multiplied by 50-100 on a one that is modified lol!
@TheCarPassionChannel3 жыл бұрын
@@ZacharySound It also has to do with the tolerances made by the machine shop and the quality of the assembly. Me assembling the engine in my garage is not going to have the same level of precision as a Mazda factory, and I've also never built an engine before. For the metals, anything that's harder than stock (to be stronger) like pistons and rings, will wear out the cylinder faster.
@ZacharySound3 жыл бұрын
@@TheCarPassionChannel It makes you think when you can get 400k out of a stock Miata engine.
