I always wondered why one couldn't trigger a relay by the shift light to shift to the next gear. You can adjust the RPM that the shift light comes on at. Your system would be much better though using TPS and speed sensors.

We do it with the motec ems, tps/rpm/wheel speed based. You could easily do it with a relay off the shift light. Shift paddle signal is a triggered ground, all you would need to do is use the relay to ground the up shift paddle signal wire.
