I couldn’t recommend Atrocity Exhibition by Danny enough because it takes that coke rap and explicitly states how dark of a pit he’s in. One of the darkest hip hop albums I’ve heard with some of the most insane production, like you have to wonder how he’s this talented to rap over these beats. But he also does say “lick the clit and she did the Macarena” so I have no idea how you’ll feel. If you haven’t checked it out,it’s an essential 2010s rap album

about the title “scaring the hoes”, i liked peggy’s explanation in an interview stating that the term is often the first criticism thrown at black art. by acknowledging that this album does “scare the hoes” in an ironic way, it takes this automatic dismissal of their art away before it can be thrown at them so that the only criticisms left are just about the music. in regards to a tour, danny said at his recent sxsw performance that he’s looking to get some help for his mental health, so it might be a while. jpegmafia usually DJs his own shows by playing music off his laptop so probably no live sp404 performance

Danny Brown as well as JPEGMAFIA is a top five rap artist of all time to me, and there's more depth to his vulgarity than you may think. I think his best album is Atrocity Exhibition(though not by much) but a great album to go back to would be XXX. It's a sort of exagerrated conceptual album where he turns up the vulgarity and substance abuse and ignorance to the max, only to flip it on it's head and writes super introspectively on the last third/quarter of the album about the downsides of these addictions, the factors which influenced him to turn out this way and his concerns for his future. It makes for a really great and cinematic listen(the production is incredible too of course) and it's full of "bangers" from front to back. Great review as always, keep it up!

I prefer Danny being deeper in the mix. His voice is highly pitched so it's better to have him blend in with the instrumental so his IMMACULATE flow compliments the beat.

Always great hearing your take on hip hop. Just to make sure you’re on point w/ your information. 808s as referenced in modern music are usually just the second kick drum of the roland 808 at maximum transient length sampled and pitched. 808 hats and snares do occasionally pop up in trap, but when a modern producer talks 808s they’re talking bass. Nowadays many of them aren’t even samples of the 808 kick, just low pitch sine waves w/ long transients and maybe a small pitch envelope at the beginning (think of an electronic kick drum in slow motion).

great review but i feel like you didn’t fully understand the context behind the scaring the hoes title/track. it’s been a thing for a while where people say rappers like MF DOOM, danny brown, griselda, etc. scare the hoes just because their music is “experimental/different”. you seemed to have interpreted it as them sort of bragging about how different they are, which i don’t think is the case. I think it’s just them criticizing the people who constantly count them out. I think it’s also great commentary on the state of hiphop and how rappers’ values have changed over time, comparing newer rappers to business men who don’t actually want to be MCs, not because they aren’t capable of being MCs, but because they don’t want to be MCs.

It’s always weird seeing people talk about this album because they always mention different songs in which Danny is too quiet on.
