We lost the key to our locking street side mailbox last week. USPS says they’re no longer responsible for replacing lost keys and to call a lock smith or we could replace it all ourselves. Challenge accepted. I followed the instructions from this video and we replaced the lock with a $10 one from Lowe’s. Thank you very much for the instructions! That was fun.

My only advice would be try to match the original lock if you can because this new lock that we got latches counterclockwise and the housing wasn’t designed for that. A metal file sorted it though.

FYI, if you don’t own the mailbox and lock please talk to your building manager to figure out what actions needs to be taken to get keys. Don’t drill before talking to the building manager. You don’t want to get in trouble.

They must have made locks stronger since then. I'm using the same drill bits for metal and I've broken 2 of them doing what you're doing. What am I screwing up?

Did you center punch it so the bit doesn’t wander? Also once you break a bit you need to get the other bit out. You won’t be able to drill through it.

I had to do something similar to a cabinet wafer lock I didn't have a key for. I was using a wave rake to rake it open when the tip of the rake broke off! Damn, it was an expensive one too. So, rather than risk another rake, I decided to drill it open. I didn't go along the top like you. I just went through the centre of the wafers.

Gary Rumain and yet a wafer lock can be jiggled open if the key is lost, the lock jiggled open and than simply replaced with a different lock with its matching key. While destructive entry is an open it ruins a perfectly good lock that could be picked by someone else within the “community” if it’s so great. The other way it could be opened is with either the sparrows or southord wafer picks Sparrows sells there set for $15 where as southord sells them for $25

Every locksmith I called wanted to charge me to do this... no one willing to pick the dang lock. So if I have to replace it anyways, at least I can save a bit and drill it out myself

Even if you pick them you can’t easily produce a cue. There’s a new tool that just came out to decode some of these. But prior to that tool or if the lock isn’t a keyway the tool works in there’s really no point in picking the lock because it’s getting replaced anyway.

Yep. I always charge more if someone messes it up before calling. Creates a ton more work.

You can do it without it. But I’d the drill bit starts to walk and you end up breaking it in the lock you create a big headache for yourself.

Raymond Belmont not everyone picks locks. In the field I’ll try picking them if I’m by myself and don’t have any jobs after. If the customer is standing there or I have another job I just drill them and get out of there. Lock is getting replaced either way so it doesn’t really matter

Raymond Belmont suggest they buy a set of jigglers to open their box and replace it? The majority of mailbox locks I do are for property managers. They just send me houses or condos and tell me what they need. Usually it’s just the doors rekeyed and if they don’t have a mailbox key then they have me open them and replace them. They aren’t interested in doing any of the work. They hire cleaners and painters handymen to fix things and locksmiths to deal with stuff like this.

Raymond Belmont another thing too with replacing the locks. “Universal” isn’t always universal and it can sometimes be a pain to get the new lock to work. I’ve got a couple years experience now so I don’t have issues but when I first got started some of them really could be a pain in rear end.
