I'm a bit confused as to when 了 can be used twice in a sentence. For example, why is 了 not used directly after 忘記？

I know. 我忘记了。if nothing after it, then you put 了 after. 我忘记给你打电话了。if something is after it, then it is usually we put 了at the end. But if 忘，then naturally we use 了 twice, 我忘了给你打电话了。Thank you.
