409 Chevy Engine On Start Up Stand

Here's a quick video of the 409 in my Dad's 52 Henry J gasser. We put it on our neighbors run stand after it was rebuilt, painted, and final assembly.

Funny story on these Engines. My grandfather was a HUGE advocat for the 409. He loved these engines. My dad told he helped my grandpa put a few together and I begged my dad to let me build one with all the parts my grandfather had layin around. He goes nah nah. Im sellin the engines cause theyre gonna finance the race car. I was kinda bent outta shape cause I wanted one in the worst way to put into a 1969 Camaro. Well we get home from somewhere, I dont remember where, and he goes lets go out to the garage. He flicks on the lights and goes "Here, this ones yours to have, I got all the usable parts from Grandpas old house. This is everything your gonna need to build this thing. But it stays here in the garage till you have a car to put it in." So right now me and my.two best friends are putting together an engine neither of them knew ever existed. And every time I talk to any older guys about 409 parts at swap meets and stuff they either look at me like im crazy cause theyve never heard of the engine or they're baffled I even know about it. Only thing left I gotta find is the heads I need to mount a 3x2 348 intake manifold. Theres a particular set of heads for a 409 block that can fit a 348 tri intake

Had A 64 409 dual quad In a 55 Chevy...4.11 rear, cheater slicks, and a set of ladder bars. Life was good in 69.

I just got an original 63' X block 409(425hp) with good OG heads in 2021 and going in a 1936 Ford pick-up! :)

Tight fit...I had a "35" Ford p/u with a 350 hp 327 "66" Vette motor. It barely fit with the side covers down.

Timing sounds slow to me . I got to install pistons on one at 13 y.o. ('63) that a trucker was building for his son's '59 el cam . 409 heads , 425 horse '09 cam , daytona a.f.b. , new bw 4 spd , new 4.11 posi . That was for graduating h.s. 👍

Had a 1958 Chevy Apache that came with this engine bone stock from Chevrolet, my gosh what a pulling truck! I ran a single quadrijet as the factory made it, had a custom long duration Cam built for it, and custom stainless steel headers, it would move mountains Even though it was only a 3/4 ton truck, I could pull 30000 lb with it up A 16% grade like it was nothing

Okay try to make this as quick as I can, I was just listening to Jan and Dean singing that song Giddy Up Giddy Up Giddy Up 409 and your engine sounds exactly like that song begins, it's music to my ears here's the boring part I had a 1956 Chevy two-door sedan and it had a 348 three Deuces three speed and I'll tell you I used to tell people it was a 409 cuz 99% of them didn't know that on the 409 the oil stick was on the other side but anyhow, Dang Son, I love that sound I love that engine! I'm seventy years old and that thing almost gave me a woody and I ain't had one of them for a while..hehe.,.

The two factory ratios were 10.5 and 11:1 for '62 and duel quad would have 11:1.

People dont talk about it much,...but if you had a 409 in a Camaro or a Chevelle back in the day when Hemi's were dominating??? Your were giving those Dodges fits. A bone stuck one too.

@@jc-garage I was talking about in the early 70s,....when my dad was drag racing at the local air strip in his Tuxedo black 1965 Chevelle SS 327 TurboFire 4SPD. Him and my uncles used to talk about how ....if a 67, 66, or 65 Impala with a rat motor (a 409) ,....or anything with a 409 pulled up,...youd see the Hemi guys heading to the local Humdinger drive-in to get a milkshake.🤣🤣🤣 Those motors were rare in any car was my point "JC". Super hard to come by even when they had only been out a few years.

@@jc-garage Hell JC. They released the motor in 61. It didn't start making waves till about 65. They made an early version of it in 60 I believe was a 342. Hens teeth right there my friend.

@@theariesexperiment4642 the 348 came out in 1958. It was originally a truck engine. Then the 409 came out in 1960. There were a few variants of it. I happen to own 4. 2 are short blocks that have never been run and have the factory paint still on the block. They got the domed pistons in em and everything. One of the other 2 is a long block in the corner of my garage and the last ones a complete engine thats stashed away with some of my distant family
