But natural sand has tons of different rock sizes it looks extremely natural as long as you prime, paint, wash and then dry brush it as you would anything else... edit: Ok I realized you actually mean globbing the entire base (sides, bottom and all) in a heaping sludge of gluey sand... Thank you. I'm so tired of the "businesses only exist to make money," excuse. It's lazy and ultimately a bad business plan in the long term and in more severe cases, even the very short term. For example, Bethesda and Fallout 76. In one year, that "businesses exist only to make money" idea applied to an actual product has destroyed the companies reputation and with so much competition for customers' time, reputation is a lot of your business. In GW's case, supporting the community, whether the community pays money for every single thing or not, is always going to be a positive move. If someone can get invested without spending money (or spending less money) up front, they're going to be more likely to spend money later and more often once they get invested and then it's a feedback loop of investment while at the same time, not making the customer feel like they're paying to be part of a community and not making the customer feel bad for spending money on their product.

@Chris A. So what, he still has a point. I mean, I don't play the tabletop, I just love the lore and play the computer games. But I used to build models as a hobby in former times and I am more and more interested in coming back, so why not doing it with something I love, namely Warhammer 40k? And who knows, in the end I miiight even try to get into the tabletop. I know some guys who play it and I always found it faszinating watching them. Buuut when I see GW acting like greedy pricks, not giving a fuck about their customers as long as they pay their prices that range from "quite high" to "insane", I might make another decision and build me some WW 2 models or maybe some Maschinen Krieger and just stick with the lore and the games. Still money they make with me, true, but they could make a lot more with their miniatures and their tabletop stuff.

Just thinking about what happened to the LOTR money spunked away on nepotism when the stores were run on a shoe string and needed support makes me think of exterminatus. @op As for community stuff there was always and likely still is an internal struggle. You can talk a good talk but unless you can show evidence doing community events results in more sales you are unlikely to win over the people who do control the money. More so when you have Forgeworld doing just fine without doing so next door. Part of the reason I left the company was because it moved towards a much more aggressive hard sales tactics , it has moved away from that to a more leaner mixed approach according to mates still working for them.

So I was the cat in high school who worked at the comic store, back in the early 90s (I had a perfect view of Image and Valiant pricing everyone to insanity), and gaming was a big part of the shop. We had a massive table in the back that saw everything from Steve Jackson’s Car Wars (and Toons), D&D, Magic cards, to the proper miniature tabletop games... Warhammer, 40k and BattleTech. We got _tons_ of Games Workshop swag as we had two full racks of their kit (it was a big investment, their minimums were high and incentives to go higher were good), a lot of which were posters with those staged battles and great terrain (and one of my fav tshirts _”Games Workshop: gamers do it on the table”_ I still wear). There was still a hobby shop in our town so folk would bring in new terrain they’d made *_all_* the time... it was seriously fun to see how creative folk got with really very few ingredients. Of course, we encouraged this just as we encouraged folk to get into it by painting our miniatures (badly in my case) at the counter and running games between me and the owner so people saw what it was... fun. Back in the days when you couldn’t measure until you’d called your distance, my boss was *_deadly_* in Warhammer with his Orc army’s goblin-slingshot, still one of my fav miniatures. By having that place people came together, it was far easier for folk to share and absorb all of the tips and tricks for beginners and pros.

I whittled away so many hours at gaming tables at my local comic shop. Even if I wasn't into the comics, seeing the genuinely creative and intricate battles that'd go on (Axis and Allies was huge locally) was absolutely fascinating. And then the painting parties and local volunteers that'd bring in some old Hero Quest minis and go through tips and such on how to paint them made everything so interesting to a little nooblet. Also, that shirt sounds amazing. :)

I really wish I had that local games store growing up. I was an autistic nerd (what a shocking combination) and the few times I tried to be sociable in Games Workshop stores (the closest) it was always a brush off unless I had the money. These days I'm older, have money and are better at not being a socially awkward teen (being a fairly sociable 40 year old) and they seem to be better (I suspect the local staff were likely as much the problem there as well as they were hobby elitists). I'm trying to get more into going to me local hobby store. I now buy everything I can through there rather than online and am slowly building up enough of a repour to just go in and play. I struggle with those kinds of social things (autistic) and don't have friends there. Still I appreciate that it exists so would rather they have the mark up rather than an online seller.... and oddly it normally ends up cheaper to get it in person, even if they have to order it in. Like even taking shipping into account it shouldn't be cheaper to get a product from a 3rd party in person store than the listed price on GWs website.

I remember back when I was involved with the hobby, my grandad made me an awesome bit of scenery. It was meant to be some kind of Imperial Outpost with a wall topped with barbed wire. 2 buildings inside and a generator put together out of spare tank parts. One of the buildings had a radar dish on top of it that if you put a fuel barrel that contained a hidden magnet over a part of the base it would trigger a switch that set the radar spinning around. It was great, really creative and I think it’s still in the loft at my parents somewhere. I always liked the freedom to make stuff up with the hobby, it’s a shame that GW would rather make money off overpriced scenery than encourage creativity like they used to!

As somebody who's favourite part of a lot of GW's stuff is the terrain, I love the output of the terrain kits, and I love building them and painting them as I find the consistent artistic style and detail to be far better than what I can make. HOWEVER, as a kid when I last played 40k in 4th edition, the absolutely gorgeous handmade tables they used to have above the shop, and the hand-built buildings made the whole game feels a lot more "grimdark" if I remember correctly, where the buildings (because of what they were made of) always felt more gritty and destroyed and war-zone-like, and it's a real shame to see that gone. I feel there's a place for both, but I will always prefer the hand-made stuff when it's done by somebody very talented and experienced, but otherwise prefer the kits for their consistency in the hands of most people (including myself) :) (Edit: I don't think I was imagining the more grimdark look, after looking back at my old 3rd Ed. Cities of Death book!)

I immediately started trying to make terrain after that. I remember making a sort of cut out section of a space hulk corridor out of the polystyrene from a TV or something (you know it has those right angle bits? ha ha) and had cut a genestealer and put it coming out of a vent (I made the vents from cardboard, I think. cut out the vents with a scalpel) used it to Display some Blood Angels.

Amen - I am of the ‘Airfix’ generation, back in the pocket money priced polly bagged kits at a local corner shop era - Airfix magazine was my monthly fix - Convert a jet to the trainer version, or a trainer to a fighter version, and then adding terrain (for dioramas) and as you say it was inspirational. These days I am retired and I make up toy soldier sets to give away to less well of folk, I do mostly 20mm as there are a lot of figures available cheaply and cheap kits from the likes of Armourfast. I also do 54mm but those are harder to find (but still cheaper than the 28mm limited ranges of wargame figures). I fill the box with terrain, mostly made from cornflake packets, sawdust and cheap paints. I make things so the kid can see how it was done and about a third of the youngsters start making their own. That is important as imaginative play lays down the neurological structures that in later life form the basis for experimentation and exploration (adults get twitchy when you use the word play but its the same things going on between the ears), a lack of imaginative play also strongly correlates to sociopathic traits. The usual first reaction is ‘Oh thanks but he really likes his console’ followed a week or so later by ‘I want my dining room table back’ (so I now supply a sheet of fleece as a battle mat). Kids haven’t changed much in the last 4,000 years.

Building your own terrain is so nice. I do occasionally grab some of the gw terrain. Take a good look at things and scaling. Then I build my own and donate the terrain table top ready as charity or prize support. The nice part of building your own terrain is how little you need and how much trash is actually treasure. Our trash and recycling is down almost 50% because of how much we upcycle into terrain. I just don't have the space and time to get through more of the would be trash.

It's great fun. Just throwing some cardboard, masking tape and some paint on top and seeing what comes out is an art in itself. Back in the day I would play with a few guys who had a few small premade barricades or the odd building and then we had a few custom made ruins and trees and stuff added in. I used to play around with polystyrene and crumble it then make craters in it with glue. The size of most polystyrene is usually ideal for 40k building sizes and it's light enough that it's not going to be an issue transporting it. And the way it crumbles mimics rubble in cities quite nicely. Some of the key things I learned was allowing ways for models to stand behind or on top of the terrain evenly, so shooting over walls and such. Having things scaled right is useful. Uneven terrain is a problem for 40k minis, sometimes you'll have hovercraft guys who want to sit on top of the ruins but it's hard to balance them right because...well they're ruins. So making it look ruined without too much craggy/rocky texture is a fine art. Lots of small modular pieces is better than 1 big fort or something. Small modular bits can be added and taken away from battlefields, 1 big fort is hard to shoehorn into every scenario. Things like the leftover cardboard from rolls of tape is perfectly sized for a small mortar pit, the plastic sprues the 40 minis come on are brilliant for adding to twisted pieces of rubble for a city. Or alternatively if you twist some bits just right you can get some alien looking trees that look all warped. A pile of small pieces is good to throw together with some pva glue for a pile of rubble or the like. They're also useful as frames for barricades, by using a small rectangular piece and gluing some cardboard to each side for a simple makeshift barrier. Premade items are often complemented by the makeshift nature of the terrain you might make in this way, giving a nice narrative comparison from orderly imperial cities and the wild circumstances that surround long running battles or the like. Shoe boxes are the right size for small warehouses as well, ripping one in half and keeping the two edges seperated a little gives a simple impression of warfare without having to think too hard about how you want to make cardboard structures. It's quite hard to make perfectly made buildings, ones that haven't been bombed. Getting the architecture right is tricky as well, make it too old fashioned and it might clash with the 40k asthetics which should be slightly more futuristic or industrial. Unless of course your setting can take this into account. And it takes a lot more work to make something look pristine and lived in than utterly ruined by war. so premade buildings are good to demonstrate this as well. Greek architecture or Roman is great for 40k, those little premade temples are perfect for a shrine or holy site.

Me personally, I have a collection of, small rocks, pebbles, and sand and mix them together. I will also grab bark chips from my yard to resemble large boulders. Place the bark chip on the base with super glue (this works better for models with bigger bases), pva the sand and pebble mixture around the bark chip (even a small amount on the chip. Primer, base paint, wash paint (extra coat of wash on the bark chip) then dry brush 3 to 5 progression of greys to tan (or other colors depending the ensemble you're going for), then small splotches of pva and static grass (I usually mix green and tan grass to achieve a more natural look)

In the september edition of white dwarf this year they did do a bit of make your own terrain. It was a winter peice. They did chop up a GW container to make it. But they showed you how to make snow drifts with modelling foam (that blue polystyrene stuff). Then painted it with texture paint and fake snow. So it does seem to be something they are looking at again.

I think I still have my gw branded hotwire cutter kicking around somewhere... I was inspired to buy it by the WD articles on making modular boards out of sheets of mdf and polystyrene ceiling tiles. Those were epic as it was the first time I recall seeing trench lines and rivers that were properly dug into the terrain. I made a lot of terrain, most of it was crap but it was wholly my creation and I loved it.

I made a whole slew of buildings, out-buildings, a cemetery, many modular bulkhead wall sections, a comms tower, a blown out vehicle and more. Really enjoyed that period but living in a small space and keeping them in boxes, I eventually gave the lion's share of it away and still regret it somewhat. I spent many hours making and painting those things and it was very relaxing and creative, getting into batch production etc.

I remember when LGS's did black templars v. dark eldar demos. It was like a 5 man tactical v 10 d/e warriors. The game store clerk had a 3 inch pink foam panel he used to cover a 4x4 table. Over a couple of days, he was cutting a moonscape, stacking bits of foam to look like rocks, and finished it off with spraypaints and texture sand. Ahh the late 90s....

I’m a guy that found your channel just for lore, but even if I don’t play the game or really even engage with the other media (may get space marine on steam, then who knows? Maybe I’ll be hooked) but from a semi-common ground, I am a gunpla builder, and one thing that I really like about Bandai, especially recently with all the build fighters series, is that they have a lot of products geared specifically towards customization and breaking the mold, like option weapons, hands, armor, accessories, decals, etc. There’s even the gunpla builder’s World Cup for really fantastic modelers. And no, gunpla doesn’t have a game associated with it (outside the Gundam breaker series but whatever), but it makes me feel like they’re encouraging customers to really let their imaginations run wild and it’s part of why I have so much respect for Bandai and Sunrise.

Much appreciated analysis of the situation. The using of the creative element as great way to hold on to people in the long term versus the ‘just buy everything’ side of things sets up dichotomy in the hobby. I wouldn’t be into 40k if there wasn’t a creative element in the game, it just wouldn’t hold my interest, but then again that’s just me and some people just want to collect.

It's a great way to use up junk, packing polystyrene, converting old kids toys and general tat from around the house :) Wall filler is your friend for texturing concrete ;) I usually make terrain when I don't feel like painting minis. The pre-made GW stuff is nice, but over priced. Considering if you do fancy buying brand new stuff to use, a trip to a hardware store can get you a ridiculous amount of stuff for the equivalent price.

Many years ago, I was the Prefect for the Warhammer 40K and Fantasy within the school back when it was 2nd/3rd edition. We used to spend days, if not weeks, making our own terrain for different scenarios. I used to play Tyranids and Space Marines so I would want us to have a massive choice of different terrain so that we would be able to use it so one guy, who used Tau, would be able to battle me, as Tyranids, without having to excuse ourselves as to why we were battling on an Imperium world. The whole reason we would make our own terrain was so that we could say that one army was invading a world of another person's army, like my Tyranids against someone else's army. The whole reason we would make our own terrain was not only to have different terrain for different scenarios, but also that we would work together to make it so we had an agreed goal to work towards. We used to spend every break time making sure that everyone of our group was happy with how the created terrain was so we could use it regardless of what army we were using were using at the time.

I found the makers of Firestorm Armada to have the right idea. They had their studio painters show things they painted and even discussed how they did it. One example was how to use chicken coup wire and air brushing to create fantastic effects. It really inspired a lot of painters to try different things. I agree with you that earlier editions of the codex books showed examples of how to paint different models shown in the codex to guide beginners. I don't know if games Workshop really tries to guide people to join their local game shop communities because I find a wealth of knowledge in my local area community. They either provide knowledge itself or tell you useful resources to look at. I think it needs to be stressed that players should hook up with their local communities.

I can say that a lot of scratch built terrain just isn't as robust as a lot of the pre-made stuff. Installation filler hills and foam core buildings wear out over the years of constant transport and use and either require more maintenance or straight up replacement compared to plastic or even MDF terrain. I have noticed that many of the FLGS in my area have pretty much eliminated much of their scratch build as it became worn out with the much hardier plastic kits from various manufacturers being the replacement. I have made terrain pieces in the past (mostly for historical gaming such as the American Revolution), but I don't even much care for building models less scratch building terrain. It was taking more time that I wanted to put it to it and eating up painting time which I do enjoy. I like GW terrain quite a bit. It is expensive, but it is also usually pretty beefy, well constructed and has a good amount of detail to it. It works great for Kill Team. I can take in a couple boards worth of terrain week in and week out in a plastic storage bit with little worry of breakage or even paint chipping. Although this is primarily about terrain, I feel like this can be said about GWs stance towards the model side of things as well, albeit to a lesser extent. I haven't been in the hobby for as long as some people (only a hand full of years), but even then, when I first started into Warhammer I remember them doing "Tip of the Day" videos that involved extensive kitbashing, or them having tips like how to make sandbags, add things to vehicles like antennas and stuff like that. Even Forgeworld had the model masterclass books that focused extensively on adding bits to your vehicles that were made from scratch, or how to build scenery from scratch (like the DKoK gun positions), which they've all discontinued. Granted the argument can be made that the books might not have been very profitable, but still. Even the newer kitbash videos seem to be centered around existing upgrades, like the sprues for space marines. This is further compounded when you look at how they're designing their sculpts to be monopose or "multipose" (which might as well be monopose) centric. It's almost as if Games Workshop as a company sat down and made a decision about how they wanted their games/models/terrain to look and while they aren't going to discourage people doing their own thing, they aren't going to support either

It's mostly about the money and some logistics. I used to be the terrain monkey for the stores I was at , had some friends at other stores that would team up with to do larger projects for Games Day and local area events. Logistically not everyone had the skills or the facilities to produce good pieces ; no where to spray or leave items to dry safely and that from a company standpoint creates a very uneven front, some stores were dire . Add to that issues with petty cash and access to materials at different prices and it is easier to say GW only pieces . And then the quality went up and people started buying it so win win and far easier on the ledgers. I do agree it's not that hard to make and have taught enough people and seen the results to see that it does get through and get people more invested in their hobby. I also think the stores are missing out as a good board even draws in normies in just to get a closer look.

Being in the hobby for nearly 20 years now I can say this. GW is doing a great job providing everything you need in order to kickstart your hobby. They provide paints, brushes, glues, tools, miniatures, terrain rules, etc all in one place, be it an actual physical store or their website. Maybe their minis are the best you can get out there but the rest is just good enough. The more I grew as a hobbyist, the least I looked into the 'official' way to do things. White Dwarf magazine stopped being the only source of inspiration and the GW way of painting things stopped being my Bible. To my suprise at the time, I discovered that there are some great paint ranges out there, although I must admit that the first steps were rather reluctant, but they were made nevertheless. My opinion is that it is a great thing that GW releases new products. As you progress in your hobby career though, depending on your character and your goals, you start to venture elsewhere in order to find more variety and/or better quality. I don't own a single contrast paint pot, not because I hate them or because they are useless but because they are a tool I do not require. If at some point I need them then I will be happy that they exist. Until then, I have free control of how I spend my money and that will be my way of supporting or not supporting trends. As far as creativity is concerned, I do believe that GW's stance affects the way that they shape the new line of 'hobbyists'. I do own a 'How to make wargame terrain' copy and I have to admit that similar books and articles do shape you, especially in your early steps in the hobby. Heck I remember the day when in Codexes you needed the opponent's permission in order to use special characters and in such a way they encouraged you to make your own, rather than copy paste the ready-made ones. As a result, I always try to add my own twist in whatever I do so it will be personalised and unique., be it conversion work, kit-bash, paintjob or just even use a different name for my regiment. Because of the afforementioned, I believe it is my duty to try and promote such behaviour to the newest hobbyists. It is not their fault that GW has changed a stance in the way they push things. The seed can be planted still. How many times have you been wowed by that army that looks so unique and has been shown some love from its creator? Or maybe that army that looks amazing and has some awesome lore which was forged by its actual deeds on the actual tabletop and not in GW's office by some professional writer. How many times have you been inspired by just another Ultramarines army with just another Roboute Guilliman? The latter does not really appeal to me so I won't be throwing any money towards that direction. To come to an end, I am really looking forward to seeing more videos like this one, I believe it is your duty to shake things up a bit and change people's mindsets. I mean, look at me, I can't remember the last time I wrote a youtube reply that long so I guess you are doing already great in my books.

I know what you mean. Recently GW in their community published an article regarding how one of their creators produced the front wall / gate for the AoS city of Hammerhal for their promotional photo for the Cities of Sigmar Battletome and I was inspired, I wanted that city wall / terrain but it transpired that it wouldn't be going into production for sale and it was a one off bespoke piece. Interestingly Bell of Lost Souls did a piece on which specific kits and bits and pieces along with a general step by step guide of how to make it. Put it this way. I bought the GW kits to make it, a "Proxxon" dremmel tool to etch some ornate patterns onto plasticard which I also bought and some gothic style wedding cake pillars. Here is the GW Community article on how the guy made the city of Hammerhal and also I provide a BoLS step by step guide on how to make it (so they do the detective work for you essentially): AoS Hammerhal terrain article: www.warhammer-community.com/2019/10/03/building-the-cities-of-sigmargw-homepage-post-3/ BoLS Step by Step Guide on how they think the guy in the article above made Hammerhal: www.belloflostsouls.net/2019/09/age-of-sigmar-the-mystery-of-the-sigmarite-fortress-solved.html

I originally stumbled upon this thinking it as a Lore video without reading the full title and saved it to watch at a later time. I eventually got around to reading the title proper and listened as I painted a model. I am not the most creative person, but I like the flexibility of the hobby in which allows creativity. When it comes to build/painting my models, the bulk of my build tactics is to use up as many pieces as possible. These models are far too expensive to leave a bunch of unused parts on the sprue. My paint scheme generally are simple, but are nothing like the 'suggested' schemes. Even though making terrain is very easy, (Hell I met someone who had a Chimera made out of cardboard and Legos) I like the quality of the current terrain/scenery. If left to my own devices, I can make my own terrain, but will take years to complete. The reason being that there are no limits and I won't be satisfied until it is perfect. The current terrain that GW is peddling sets a limit, in which I can go crazy with how it looks while keeping it within reason. I will not exclusively buy GW's terrain, but prefer it to keep a specific narrative. Eventually I am going to attempt a custom trench network to show off my Death Korps, but that will have to wait until my city is ready for play.

So much this! I think the people are as creative as back in the day, they often just do not know what they are able to do. I see a lot of great inspiring stuff from new people as well as from established hobbyists. GW does kickstart them when they start, you got to give them that, it just makes it harder for the hobbyists to break with using exclusively GW supplies when they advance their abilities. When they released the paint handles, and now the spray stick, I was thinking you can have both of that for free if you just go to a wine store and ask for spare cork.

It's also irrelevent, games workshop is big enough and ugly enough to make it's own business decisions without some half baked arguments coming out on the internet about why they shouldn't do something. As the consumer it's our job to get as much free and enjoyable things out of their franchise, let their business accountants worry about their balance sheets. We just want what's fun. Homemade terrain, rules, painting guides etc are all a key part of modelling and having fun with this sort of thing. If you build up the community the money will come if your product is good enough anyways. Even pirated or third party made models don't matter, those people will still be invested in the world and it's lore they will still contribute to the community. In many cases with pirated media indicates a pricing problem, the demand is there but the supply is priced too high. Back in my day you could get a box of 20 guardsmen for £12 in 2000. aye 20. Adjusting for inflation, the same number of guardsmen should sell for £18 today. at approx 2% inflation rate. Instead I look in GW store and see 10 of the same models selling for £20. That's £40 for 20 guardsmen. Nearly quadruple the price it once was (4X12 = 48. me smart). Warhammer £40,000 income per annum more like. (average disposable income in UK 2019 is £28,400).

@@Madhattersinjeans Definitely, I'm fortunate I have a trade that's pretty profitable or else it would not be possible for me to participate

Yeah I just bought some TTCombat terrain instead of GW terrain. Reason? Price and price alone. Love 40k and Necromunda but its a constant struggle to not rid myself of all things GW and just walk away from them because at this point in time they feel down right predatory in their actions and pricing.

The trash terrian series from Gamza and The Terrain Tutor are great channels for making your own terrain. I have tried my hand at making my terrain. Buildings are more difficult to make well but I have made a lot of hills, craters, trenches, and stands of trees.

Same here, it's the little things like in the back of the 8th Ed Rulebook that says "make you own terrain and rules" that stops me from dying inside completely. Don't buy it, don't 3D print it, MAKE IT YOURSELF! This is a good topic to rant about.

Anyone remember the *bar brawl* mini game for Orks and Gretchin that was in a WhiteDwarf around year 2k? I made a model of the bar (which was just a play board double-page in the magazine) I should of made 2 or 3 - it turned out the most popular game we played in my GW store when I'd been left alone while the other staff went to GamesDay.. And the "how to make a 40k bunker" template from WD was a real hit with the kids during the Sunday "training days" we used to run, we made a competition out of it that got really competitive well beyond it's simplicity.

Just a couple of ideas for folks wanting terrain, fish tank ornaments can include castles and rocks (and skeletal remains), check out eBay or a pet shop. Also, old Lego can make bunkers and walls pretty flipping quickly, and as long as you haven't nicked the bricks from a sibling or your own child, spray 'em up and off you go!

I have really enjoyed making my own terrain for the table and mixing it with the GW stuff. It's all great.

100% agree. This is a hobby that needs enthusiasm; having awesome terrain breeds that enthusiasm. I will buy more models if I'm enthusiastic. I will usually buy more soldiers. If I use up my monthly budget on a building, I don't get new soldiers to play with! If I knock up 5 buildings from scrap, and spend that budget on soldiers, I get everything!

I very recently made my first terrain piece out of a cookie tin some bits and some paint. It was easy and fun and it's not incredible but I am proud of it nonetheless.

Got into this game in the Rogue Trader days... I'm a big fan of home made scratch built terrain.

Great video. I remember reading articles from the website or WD were they showed there team making terrain with old fish furniture and used cans. I think alot of it has to be with the expansion of the community and the wealth of 'how too' videos. maybe they have just taken a backseat as the community has help each other with ideas.

Lapsed GW fan who has got back into lore via your videos (thanks for that BTW) - I had no idea that terrain-making had declined to this extent, which is kind of sad. It was one of the things that got me into the games in the first place.

I like making terrain as much as I like building the models. My favorite part is the crafting. I have a small hill and a boulder wall made from styrofoam from when I was a kid, they still look good. I think games workshop should make more small, individual terrain bits that we can then incorporate into our own terrain creations. Official gates, wall panels, crates and barrels, columns, insignia, etc... basically all the detail bits that could help flesh-out a homemade styrofoam table. Official plant and animal bits for specific worlds. Tables seem to only go one of two ways: fully scratch-built and realistic, or all-purchased which in my opinon looks very flat, cheap, and toy-like. My favorite tables are those where time was taken to hand-sculpt dynamic terrain, and then a purchased piece of terrain is modified and incorporated into the scratch-built stuff.
