Worst experience ever at a GW shop, I won’t name it. My daughter loves playing games and we have maybe 50-60 complex board games, and so at 13-14 I took her to the nearby GW shop. She had an extra day off school compared to the local kids so I figured she would get a chance to play, etc. I had played with friends one the very early days of 40k, and had for a long time bought models just to paint ( my first GW experience was the original citadel adventurer set and citadel paint set). I figured a fun war game might be interesting, plus I wouldn’t have to learn all the rules. When we went onto the shop we chatted to the manager and the people in there. It was clear however we were disturbing their friend time. He asked if we wanted to buy a box set, and I was like not today, ideally just get a game, see if she likes it, maybe take away a box of something to paint (my daughter is also arty). At that point the manager said he was really busy, but would give her a quick game, me thinks cool, it will burn up some time and at least can see if she is into it. He puts a basic marine force down for her, and says he’ll just get some enemies to fight, he proceeds to annihilate the marines in two turns and then asks what do you think, as you can imagine that is not going to work for a kid who is a good strategist and gamer. I swear to god they had a person who might have for the next 10 years been in the hobby, had me buying Christmas presents etc. some people in war gaming hobbies are the worst, but even for self interest alone you think he’d see that but obviously winning in front of his friends was cool. Asked my daughter if she wanted to try another place she was like I don’t get what people see in it, I explained he was a dick, and that another shop might be better. Her view was it probably wasn’t worth the effort. This is a big reason they struggle to bring in new people, you get one chance to impress.

Unfortunately there are some people in the gaming community and shops that are very clique, which is wrong. I used to run a wargames club and all ages, sexes, and disabilities were welcome and encouraging to new players. It's such a shame as people should be able to enjoy the hobby in all aspects. At a recent Games Worksop painting event some of the best armies were painted by two local Women painters. Hope you manage to find a good club/ group to express your daughters interest.

I'm scared to death to expose my daughters to this amazing hobby simply because of how I see the content creators I watch get harassed out of the hobby they love. My local GW had a wonderful manager who recognised me around town even thought I'd only been going in every two weeks and what not and he was amazingly patient with me. Then I found out he had left to go to another LGS that did more than just WH and I was gutted. I'm hoping the new one is just as nice for when my kids finally come back to the UK so I can teach them 40k or BB. I hope it hasn't scared her off completely, but by the sounds of things she's good at shrugging things off and looking for something new!

Last time I was in an actual GW I went in for brushes and paints (10 or so paints and a rattle can of Chaos Black). I stood at the counter ready to buy my stuff while the employee pointedly ignored me in favor of the conversation he was having at one of the gaming tables with 3 or 4 other guys who obviously hang out there a lot. I stood there for what felt like an eternity and then just walked out with the brushes and paints. I stood outside to see if he would come after me and he didn't so after waiting for about 2 minutes I walked back in and threw all of the stuff I'd "stolen" back onto the counter. The clattering and things falling on the floor was enough for all of them to look at me, but they still didn't say anything to me, so I just left it all and left the store. I haven't been back to a GW since.

That second story was not all that different from mine that was read last week. It goes to show that if something seems off, don't be afraid to see that rule as long as you do so politely. Hell this whole video is a lesson in if you see something say something.

Its a shame since I love 40k so much but it really is true. The game is set up in such a way that you have to know everything about your opponents army and its rules. Sure you can just say "well most people are honest so its an exception when that happens", even if thats true you are still having to assume that the opponent actually knows their own rules to begin with, because they could be as honest as they come yet still get things wrong resulting in advantages to them unintentionally.

Yeah and being mistaken about your own army usually means limitations are ignored rather than empowerment. Which means that being wrong about your army is in your own advantage.

The models down the stairs reminded me of a 40K event I attended and as all the gamers were marching up the stairs to get into the venue some guy near the front had their case open and all the models fall down the stairs….. never seen so many gamers be so nimble to try and avoid the models but unfortunately some did get crushed under people feet. Not sure how the guy kept it together think I would have cried

I knew a guy back in the late 90s / 2000s who would play MtG and throw his lotus deck against the wall when it didn't work and he would lose... I also knew a guy who would shuffle-stack his deck by thumbing cards. This happens across many hobbies and I had seen my fair share of cheaters on tabletop battle tech then 40k doing cheats then getting upset when busted.

I had already knew that things were bad with "dave" when I heard he had Eldar I've luckily only had one encounter with eldar and the player was a good man, in it strictly for the fun as he wanted to try and fight my baneblade in a 1v1 against his combat patrol even when I offered to quickly tally up my points to make the fight as fair as possible as he didn't have as much anti tank as I though would be needed, I won with one wound left in the end

I do think player etiquette, community and attitude is not what it used to be. When stores used to be where you would go for a game you had your local players who you would be friendly with and play many times so you all kind of "came up in the game" often from a young age buying a unit or teo at a time. I have seen more recently it's more I'm an adult with money I like X army more of than not one thats in fashion so i just bought the apex list for right now. As the competitive scene is the most vocal and active, what these new players have seen online its all about the competitve list and tournament play is the be all and end all. Ive nothing against new players I've found many to be enthusiastic and fun to play or tournament play at all. But i do think there is a noticeable difference between the attitudes of then and now.

To answer the question from the 2nd story, 40k has a huge following. The odds of meeting bad players is higher. Because the rules are poorly written, and in constant charge it's easier for cheaters to use them to their advantage. A saying in my local area, south Florida; the biggest problem with 40k is the players. These are long time 40k players who have played in multiple events and against many opponents.

I’m thankful for having a loving college wargaming club where everyone just wants to have fun. But nonetheless OP even stated he had two great games before fighting Dave. By all means there are still amazing people in the hobby who I’d say are the majority. There’s just some bad players like there are in any hobby.

Unless you know your army/codex back to front you wouldn't want to go around calling out people unless you knew for sure they tried making up rules to cheat. Plus even when you know you're in the right you have to deal with the cheaters outburst when they've been caught. I had a disagreement the other week over a MTG ruling where someone thought a creature with Infect and Lifelink couldn't get life from Lifelink and we weren't even playing in the same pod. Sometimes at the end of the week you just want to play and not deal with the drama, though it was later discovered that Lifelife does trigger with Infect creatures.

I think there might have been an increase in Tornie players thus an increase in A** players but GW sort of wants more Tournies. I think GW wants to turn 40k into a TT E-sport to drive sales. They don’t like their image as being one for the outsiders.

I think you definitely have a point I've seen a huge increase in tournie players where I'm at for 40k and AoS. Sub groups have been formed and it has become somewhat toxic. Fortunately as I play Kill Team and Blackstone I am mostly outside this culture and avoid the worst of it.

I've always found it hard to imagine 40k becoming a eSports type game. Just because of the time length of each game. I've never watched a 3 hour plus battle report video in my life. The views on those videos are generally low. Which suggests to me there isn't much demand. I may be totally wrong but that's how it seems to me. It would think it would be more like a 40k in 40 minutes type show.

15:15 I like the better proportioned Space Marines too, what sullies it is this weird hamfisted and unnecessary lore addition. Solely releasing those would have worked better.
