I think this is a good "basics" list. I'm having to recreate a wardrobe, basically from scratch, because I lost significant weight the last two years and nothing fits now. This is a great place to start for me.

New technology on the way we create fabrics and clothing nowadays makes a huge difference. From cotton underwear to a more wicking breathable fabrics, and I understand about the tight sock bands, especially on hot weather, become itchy at times, and form that permanent ring mark around your calves & shins. I love my waxed jackets & coats, those are my go-to jackets for the Chicago fall & winter. Thank you for the awesome vid!

This was a very good list to build a wardrobe foundation from, John. And very good color suggestions. My additions would be: - Two belts, dark brown and black with moderate buckles. You can also add a burgundy or tan belt depending on your shoes. - Pocket squares can add some extra to your outfit without wearing a tie. A plain white and a patterned burgundy goes a long way. - A navy overcoat, depending on where you live. It's a bit early right now, but where I live I'll need transition pieces all the way to a parka.

Having a nice good shirt jacket can give nice versatility to various outfits you can wear depending on its color and at the same time kinda act as an outer coat in the cooler seasons or days that it’s cooler. All the rest of stuff completely agree. Everyone starts at a different point in their clothing basics. For me it was having a versatility of basic colors in Chinos and good fabric Dress Trousers of lightweight Wool. Then color Leather Shoes, Belts. Then shirts of variety from Dress Shirts, Knits, casual shirts, polos. It all adds up to give variety. Building it all takes some time.

I no longer wear a suit, unless it's specifically called upon. I get by with a dark blue blazer, that I wear with dark jeans, a button down shirt and brown brogues as my smart casual attire, (Dark Grey or Brown Tweed Sports Jacket in the colder season) If I need a suit I throw in a pair of dark blue GAP Chino's and add a tie. On first inspection looks like a smart formal suit but it doesn't feel like I'm wearing a suit, it feels like I'm wearing a pair of jeans with my casual Navy Blazer. I don't feel stuffy or over-dressed like I do when I'm wearing a suit. I do own a suit, a nice one in fact and a pair of black Oxfords, but they are among the least worn items I own, I just don't feel comfortable at all in them.

A third shirt could be a light, even lighter, pink. I quit even subtle pattens decades ago. I'm in Canada, so sweaters are a must. The problem I have is that they don't seem to hold their shape after a season or two. I've got about 8 that I rotate. I machine wash and air dry, but it doesn't seem to make much difference. Could you do a segment on how to pick a good sweater that will last. Personally I would suggest sticking to “plain” (non patterned) trousers. You can make them more interesting playing with different design details and textures. The reason why is that it just makes getting dressed that much easier, the plain trousers will go easily with a pain or pattern shirt and jacket. Besides that I would definitely include a suit as an essential. You will need it for those more formal situations (weddings, funerals). You could even get one in a dark blue in a birds eye weave, that way the jacket could even double as your sports jacket 🙂👍

Most clothing items you discuss are blended to a point I have reactions. Shoes included. Unfortunately for me the great majority of manufacturers make blended or synthetic clothing and make it difficult to find stylish clothing. It doesn't help that my body shape is slightly abnormal.

There could be a place for Henley shirts and long-sleeve crew t-shirts as one step, and 2 steps up from a t-shirt - more casual than a polo but less prone to having garish "school-boy" logos on them. Roll-necks, turtle-neck, mock-neck and crew neck merino sweaters along with a good cable knit and 2 colours in a shawl neck cardigan should cover all the colder weather too. I'd also throw in a black and navy dress shirt. What's your take on dress shirt collars? Classic? Semi cut-away? Full cut-away? Thanks in advance.

I agree. Now, these days, you can get suit separates which while not perfect, gives the wearer the chance to break up the suit and just wear the pants with an contrasting jacket or sweater, or the jacket with some chinos for a more casual vibe. But in some cases, you really can't wear some dark wash jeans or a pair of chinos with a jacket. traditional weddings, job interviews, funerals, for example.

But I am there beause of my Technical competence, but by searching the Internet for guidance I found John's Channel a year ago. He is a great inspiration because he dresses in a manner that fits in with my Marketplace Peers. What I consider to be the very best Fashion advice for people who are dressing for Work and not the Weekend is in The New Testament, where the Apostles were told : "When in Rome do as the Romans do". Even if that involves being seen wearing Carhartt branded clothing. Phil.

@Linl When I was a baby I learnt to walk on Australia's famous Manly Beach. When I was 4 I lived in one of the apartments built right on the ocean front rocks at Bondi Beach, which are the ocean front buildings that are always shown in every photo of Bondi Beach. Massive storms take the waves up to the ground floor. If you Google "Massive rock washed up from ocean floor at Bondi Beach you will see where I lived during World War 2. I lved on the highside of the road that seperates the apartments and runs a shorr distance to the cliff top at Ben Buckler. That was my Father's choice, because he was in the Royal Australian Navy. So I became a lover of the sea, but I think that living in the mountains, with distant views, is where my heart is at it's happiest. Phil.

@Linl I have survived 4 cases of COVID 19 during the last 3 years. The first time I collapsed at a friend's house, whose neighbour is a Nurse at the largest Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. She called an ambulance, and when I arrived at the Emergency Department, the Nurse in Charge said "You will not live more than two days". Early the next morning, the Doctor in Charge of the COVID 19 Emergency Ward said "You will not live to see the end of the day", but I survived. Last month when I survived my fourth COVID 19 attack, after being told once again that I only had hours to live, while I was in bed I was visited by a young Ward Doctor, who had a very large smile on his face. He simply said "For your age you have an amazing constitution. I am here to tell you that for the fourth time, you have beaten the strongest strain of COVID 19. So I said that I was just gratefull to have been given the chance to live another day, when numerous people in the same Hospital were dying. I had never used any form of Social Media, including Google, until I taught myself, on the very basic smartphone that I bought the morning of the day I first caught COVID 19. So after that very long winded explanation, I would be very happy to hear about your likes and opinions, because I now feel like I have started a SECOND LIFE which will have many more suprises. Thank you for your very kind comments. Phillip.

A good, solid list. Obviously, every man except the strict minimalist will build from this list and acquire more than the bare basics. A couple of things I think I would add. A suit. Preferably in navy or charcoal grey. Even if you only wear it a few times a year, there are times a man needs to wear a suit. I am thinking about semi formal or formal occasions like evening weddings and, of course, funerals. Black dress shoes. They are more dressy than brown, but if you need them, you need them. Usually on occasions when you have to wear a suit. I am thinking captoe oxfords, whole cuts, or quarter brogues. Though if you have a pair of plain toe or split toe bluchers, that could work, too.

Linen or lightweight Trousers definitely for hot weather. For Linen would you prefer sky blue or a light grey? Both sound pretty reasonable. I currently have a pair of Charcoal Grey lightweight Wool Trousers and despite the darker color they are still comfortable in the heat due to the breathable fabric and weight as you know. For Chinos I have Blue and Tan so far but looking to add a couple others perhaps Navy and Burgundy if possible.

Thanks Manuel! I’d say the light gray might be more versatile.

@@40OverFashion Thanks John appreciate it as always! In AZ as you know it's hot most of the year so these pieces are truly essential. When it does get cooler I do also wear my dress shirts, sweaters, and Jackets. I've been getting into sport coats as you mentioned in the video. My next choices I'm going for are an Olive Green and a Brown both solids. Anyway fantastic content! I think anyone can restart their wardrobe from this video.

Have you covered the best way to iron dress shirts?

I made a video like that years ago, but maybe I should do it again. Appreciate the suggestion!

Nice list. I find I often wear a pair of dark brown leather lace up boots also. Mine are Allen Edmonds and have been a quality staple for many years. Off topic (sorry), might you be planning a “What to wear to a fall wedding” video by any chance? Working on an outfit for an early October outside/barn, evening cocktail attire, wedding in New England.

I love your style and recommendations. I do wear tees quite a bit in the summer however. Great stuff!
