However, I hate this trend nowadays of guys wearing "overly fitted" suits. Enough firm padding, arch not too high or too unsupported, a pretty flat sole not shaped like a canoe, but not a plank either. I can go 2 miles in 30 minutes in them. I don't care if white with logo isn't in fashion. And I still wear the same size shirts and pants as I did when I was 30. But the trouble is, my wardrobe is predictable. @notyoungnotold3730 Жыл бұрын
Shirt-stays are totally unnecessary if you get your pants off of your hips and have them at the natural waist. Not to mention that it looks way better. This guy’s whole style is built on wearing his pants too low. It forces all of his other rules like shirt fit all the way down to leg openings.
@tuberific454 Жыл бұрын
@@notyoungnotold3730 Billowy shirts are unflattering regardless of the rise of the trousers. But shirt stays can address that issue by applying a constant downward force ie a perpetual exertion of a tucking action onto the shirt, resulting in a more streamlined silhouette.
@RobertJonesWightpaint Жыл бұрын
@@tuberific454 I might want a streamlined silhouette if I were a torpedo, or possibly a sea-lion. Being neither, I don't want to look as though someone has painted clothes on my body - you probably look absolutely fine in your choice of clothes, but I just wouldn't. Shirt stays are pointless if you wear genuinely waist-fitting trousers: braces/suspenders also help, and render shirt-tucking totally unnecessary.
@EricJJones6 ай бұрын
That is because your shirt doesn't fit. If your shirt fits, you can have it stay down. Plus your trousers as someone stated below aren't fitting correctly, because they wouldn't let your shirt move much. Also, your undershirt and the placement of your undershirt matters. The undershirt inside your underwear helps your shirt stay down. All should fit and drape naturally. The only stays you should have are collar stays.

Mostly, the tie is tied too short and I really think that this reveals a certain lack of diligence when it comes to being dressed correctly.

Nothing wrong with “chasing” and wearing current trends at 40+ if you can actually pull it off. I dress more conservatively (appropriately) at the office, with well fitted and semi-tailored clothing. Then on evening and weekends I let my youthful energy and expression out with more artistic and creative clothing choices. Yes, they make me appear less professional, but I don’t care, because it’s outside of work and I am expressing the way I feel inside… and it’s fun to not follow every rule just because your supposed to look like a serious “dad”.

I am afraid that I am going to have to dissent from a few things that you said in the video. First, boat shoes are definitely not something that you have to give up if you are over 40. When I was in my twenties (and I’m 65 now) I remember seeing very distinguished gentleman wearing a polo shirt, navy blazer, chinos and boat shoes. In my opinion, the look was timeless. The key, however, is to have a good looking pair of boat shoes, not the pair that you bought ten years ago. The other thing that I will disagree with is pleated pants. In the photo you posted, the biggest issue is the length of the pants, not the pleats. Fix that, and you have a fine fit. Finally, you fall into the trap of thinking that clothes need to be form fitting to look nice. I can’t tell you how many times that I’ve seen younger guys, with athletic builds even, go for the slimmest fit possible. The end result is a hideous look where fabric is bunched at every joint. The classic look is a clean drape from the top of the garment to the bottom. That is best achieved by giving some room to move in the garment, and not hugging too closely to the body. Obviously, gentleman who have extra pounds are at a disadvantage. But the most important thing that they can do to improve the lines between shirts and pants is to wear suspenders instead of a belt. The pants hang better and the shirts drape better with that simple change. Of course, that encourages the wearing of sports coats and blazers to hide the suspenders. But surprise! As an older guy, you can pull that off easily.

I am not 40 or over, but I couldn't agree more with your points, which should be followed below 40 too. As for people talking about how they don't care about their appearance. The second is, while most of you talking about "don't judge the book from it's cover" you do exactly by the way you are talking about the people who do care about their appearance.

I'm not even thinking so much about clothes but still know that classic style is the way to go. I agree with everything you said, especially with that pleted pants and that shirts shall be somewhat slim. As I am slim so it fits me well.

67 here, agree with all you said and I try to go the route you suggest with one exception. I live in a coastal environment where marinas abound ( I also have a boat). My main shoe choice is a classic boat shoe, Sperry, in a mono-color dark brown upper and white sole. You can wear then in many situations even dress them up if they're in good shape. I'll be watching more of your videos...thanks!
@GrayShadow13Ай бұрын
Yep, you almost need a separate video just for folks that live along the coast of Florida. Whole different idea here as to what is acceptable or not LOL and rarely even see long pants anywhere on anyone under 70, even in nice restaurants. And boat shoes are everywhere, almost as common as flip flops 🤣
@TCshore19 ай бұрын
John great show boat shoes are always in style on boats as they prevent slipping and the white soles do not leave marks on the deck. Wearing anything else will not be appreciated by the owner and maybe awkward

Great video and advice…funny cause last night I was in fact doing a closet purge…I tried on every single dress shirt I own and although they are high quality dress shirts, I found most were way to large & ill fitting, making me look like I was drowning in fabric…I recently bought some shirts from Untuckit, a shop that specializes in shirts that are meant to be worn untucked as the name implies. Even though I’m carrying a little extra weight around the middle they fit great at the shoulders and chest. When I tried these on and compared them to my current dress shirts, well I couldn’t believe how I’ve been wearing those frumpy dress shirts…53 yrs old and barely figuring out I’ve been wearing the wrong clothes all these years…it’s all about the fit, great advice!

Totally agree with everything. Boat shoes are your dad's shoes. Driving mocs are much better (last photo about casual loafers from Tod's, the best and most elegant driving shoes in my opinion). Pleated pants it's a big no, something from the 90's or 2000. Even if there is a comeback, I will never wear pleated pants again. Shirts too large, or oversized. It's something from the past and it doesn't fit you. I still have a few shirts from Polo RL classic fit (good quality, they last forever), but I only wear them on weekends under a sweater. There is a trend about oversize clothing, but in my opinion it doesn't fit your body.

Thank you, sir. I told my lady I was having a suit made and she asked why. I said "because I dislike slouching around in second hand clothes like an urban slug." Let me say that the pointer on having the shoulder seam above the shoulder is something I will point out to the tailor. I am going for an Australian outdoor look suited to racetracks and film shoots. You support my instincts on good fittings. I will keep my eye on your vlog. BLUEY QUILTY, MA - Copyright producer, Australia.

A very timely video that reaffirms some changes i have recently made. i am in my early 70's but look younger due to good genetics (mainly a full head of hair with just the right amount of gray highlights). When i was younger i used to have my suits tailor made which made me look good as i had lost about 30 pounds through better diet and exercise. About 8 years ago i did gain some weight back and i started seeing a personal trainer (at my wife's suggestion of course!) for about 1 year. After that i became somewhat of a gym rat and now faithfully lift weights 5 days a week. i lost a bit of the weight but the rest has been redistributed into more upper body muscle mass (arms and chest). So recently i have been replacing items in my wardrobe (yeah i ditched several pairs of those baggy pleated pants and some of those baggy shirts). thanks goodness i never bought any of those square toed shoes that were (are) in my opinion butt ugly. i have some classic slip on loafers and lace up dress shoes that have remained in style. Even underwear..no more baggy undershirts and baggy boxers, just ones that accentuate my upper body and arms. i am not trying to look younger (though i DO want to continue to act younger). But diet, exercise and staying active are key components to feeling and acting younger. The up to date styling is the cherry on top.

I'm 68, and gave up giving any sh*ts about my appearance 20 years ago. Under Armor shorts, t-shirts, and slip on sneakers. It's 100+ degrees everyday where I live, I'm shooting for comfort, not style. And if it was cool enough, I'd wear jeans and an Under Armor t-shirt and sneakers.

I am over 60, 6'5" and about 230 lbs. I wear size 15 shoes. I'm fit enough that I still play basketball at a respectable level, and I would describe myself as "tall, but not big". I'm not built like a defensive lineman; I am considerably leaner, but nowhere near as skinny as I was in my youth. My preference has long been for cuffed trousers, as anything not cuffed seems to emphasize the size of my feet. Unfortunately, such trousers have become more difficult to find lately. I don't think I'm lean enough to wear the flat front trousers recommended in the video, and my concern about leg width is that this style would make it difficult to draw emphasis away from the size of my feet.

as a 76 year old male, the one thing i learnt in life is that if people think my clothes are out of style i dont care, i dress the way it suits me and i wear what i am comfortable in and if someone doesnt like it too bad, i see tooooooooooo many fashion people that look so out of place i laugh, fashion styles are created to make money for stores bottom line. as for looing younger, it is what it is, your looks make you look younger not your clothes, you only look like neater by being in style not younger. if you look at older women, most dress for what suits them and those that want the latest styles look out of place.

There is definitely a fine line between loose and baggy. I definitely don’t want baggy shirts and pants but at the same time I don’t want them to tight, it just isn’t comfortable for me. Like the man said, trial and error is the key. Very informative video.

Great video, you are doing man-kind a service! Just got rid of a pair of square-toe dress shoes I still had. A pair of "my favorite pleat dress pants" I found recently in my closet and since I lost a lot of weight and now have the same size I had 25 years ago I thought to try it on again. Man, I couldn't believe I was ever wearing that! Threw it out instantly.

Pretty sound advice, What about socks or no socks? Wearing a shirt outside the trousers or tucked in? Wearing a necktie with a short-sleeved dress shirt? (I never would, always open collar with short sleeves. Wearing a necktie with a long-sleeved dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow is OK).

Fitted shirts are fine if you’re straight up and down. I have broad shoulders / chest and end up with shirts that have tons of material at waist level. Sizes are crazy too. My 48” chest says my shirt comes with a 56” waist! Mine is 38” with middle age spread.

I'm in a similar boat... 34yrs in a gym and I have a good size chest and fairly broad shoulders, but a narrow waist. On the recommendation/insistence of my wife, I invested in a few tailored shirts to wear with a tailored suit and it makes all the difference in the world.

@@Joey21071 Yeah mine is a personal preference and that all my Trousers are custom tailored. My trousers are mostly either light to medium wool high waisted pants and have s very nice drape. The quality of material is also very good. I also agree that when it comes to cotton type trousers, i mostly elect to go flat front on those as the cotton don’t drape well. This is all very nice for city folks, but on my ranch we wear Levis, boots, work shirts, and Stetson hats. I have plain brown boots for everyday use and polished black boots for occasions like weddings and funerals. A tan, beat-up hat for everyday, and a special black Stetson for the special occasions. I have better things to worry about on my ranch than style for city folks.

I'm 61. I retired early and haven't had a wedding to attend for several years so my wardrobe hasn't been updated. I had a funeral to go to a month ago, trading weddings for funerals now :( , and found my clothes were well out of fashion. I ended up wearing black denim pants with good shoes and a good well fitting dress shirt. I felt under dressed for the occasion. All the other senior men were wearing their 20 year old suis and it looked terrible. I wasn't being judgmental, I was just taking a mental note.
@BeckVMH Жыл бұрын
A number of years after retiring I donated all my suits and dress shirts to a nonprofit. I opted to purchase a single navy modest windowpane suit solely for weddings or funerals. I’d kept five ties to mix and match depending on the occasion. Likewise, in my mid 60s, I’m apt to attend more of the latter than the former haha.
