Would’ve been cool if they made it with the option to plug into a wall and car outlet like the cooler.
@Gerbyq

It probably pulls a lot of current.. wall socket should ofcourse work, but most car outlets go up to like 100 watts i.e. 10 amps at 12V
@petermiddo

@Gerben De V. It depends on the plug. The smallest Anderson Plug is 50A, but they have 125A and 175A plugs. Having said that, very, very few of the Anderson plugs (of any size) I've seen are cabled for the Amp draw over the (return) run length.
@Jako1987
@Jako1987 Жыл бұрын
@@Gerbyq It should be able to charge batteries with 12V (or AC) and then use the battery to operate. Then it doesn't need peak power from the outlet. Cost reasons maybe?
@mfbfreak
@mfbfreak Жыл бұрын
That would require a whole extra inverter, either 230v to 40v, or 12v to 40v, and add heavily to the cost. It would also pull way too much power from any 12v car accessory circuit - you'd need a direct hookup to the starter battery for it to work. I do think that by now, Makita would have a market for 230v powered "battery replacement modules" because they have so many things that run on these batteries. Those would be fairly easy to design - just a big fat off the shelf power brick and a battery shell with some intelligence to fool the appliance into thinking it's running on a battery. I reckon that for 25 bucks in production cost and 100 in consumer cost you would be able to sell one. A 12v to 40v one is not very standard and would cost a lot more.

One thing I noticed in heating up the food, which is true with a standard microwave or even when boiling water, having food covered makes a huge difference in the time it takes to warm up. This is proved, anecdotally, in this video as the left overs and big Mac heated up pretty quickly compared to the ‘healthy meal’.

I think the 4680 cells have less energy density than the 2170 cells
@astro-snake
@astro-snake Жыл бұрын
@@perfectdiversion You’re not wrong currently. To be more specific, 4680 cells have the potential to have ~5x the energy density of 2170, but don’t yet because it is a new technology that hasn’t matured, unlike the old 2170. It can be done, but to manufacture at scale is a different game that will take time.
@raymondo737
@raymondo737 Жыл бұрын
@@astro-snake Jeez, ... you surely must be munching on marketing slides for breakfast. Tesla's 4680 have energy !!!density!!! of ~245-250Wh/kg. Panasonic's current crop of 2170s have ~270Wh/kg. The 4680s have 5 times the energy capacity per cell, because they are over 5 times the size of a single 2170. No wonder BS marketing companies are doing so well on the other side of the pond. There will be no 5 times jump in the energy density of li-ion batteries, because the current ones are already at 70% of the theoretical maximum. Li-Ion batteries are a mature technology, well in the territory of small-incremental gains and diminishing returns.
@alesksander
@alesksander Жыл бұрын
@@astro-snake 5× is volumetric density number because battery is bigger. Currently this 4680 is aprox 244 Wh/kg vs 270-290 Wh/kg for 2170. There is a reason why 2022 Model S uses 1865 battery cells.

This is cool as hell.. for everyone making jokes in the comments, if you don’t understand why something exists then it obviously wasn’t made for you. Lots of people work in very remote places, off grid and still need a warm lunch. No one is going to climb down a massive windmill or drive 5 hours into town from a logging site to grab a hot burrito from the convenience store. Being able to have something hot to eat is huge deal when you work hard or are miserable… it’s a small comfort that makes hard work bearable. Sure, it’s expensive and niche.. but it’s probably bulletproof and made in small numbers for now. That doesn’t mean the idea itself isn’t good. Again, this wasn’t made for everyone, if you think it’s ridiculous that’s fine. It obviously wasn’t made for you! It was made for the guy who saw it and instantly started checking prices because he’s sick of cold coffee, and food. This is also a cool option for vanlife/campers. When the weather is nice just bring the whole microwave outside with you to cook and eat wherever you want!

If there was an option to use a mains power adapter/ genset/ powerstation i would go for one. But only using only 40v batteries is a piss poor design choice considering the runtimes it would be a poor onsite choice. Considering the number of extra batteries you would need onsite, not to mention recharging the bloody things. Thanks for the video, interesting if expensive novelty item really without alt power choice.

Only use this could have is medium range job site (if it's 15 minute drive home, then you just go home for dinner, if it's in middle of nowhere then you have a generator...) where there is no power because of a fault, or unanticipated need to turn off power to do work safely, and you didn't bring a generator. It would be nice if there are also going to be the XGT coffee maker and cooler. No need for different batteries for your lunch break appliances.

This microwave is clearly aimed at the tradie market, for job sites. It takes 40V batteries that dont have (at the time of this review and my comment) a 12v charger. Which means, when you're on a camping trip, its one and done, then its just dead weight.

Although I admire Makita's ambition I would put this in the same invention category as 3 other ambitious inventions 1 the chocolate teapot 2 the motorcycle ashtray 3 the canoe handbrake Not for me but great review

2x 40v batteries clocks in at around 500 wh total, and this unit seems to be speced for 500w, so about 60 minutes of run time on the equivalent of medium on a normal microwave. Adjusting cook times this is about 24 minutes of "Cook on High for X minutes" cooking on two batteries if trying to figure out what you can make in one charge.

Cool! Now I could just pop that microwave in a backpack, weighing ”so little”, and then buy some cheap hotdogs during a nice bicycle ride with the family. And it’s so small…AND cheap also!😉 I love the video, just my kinda swag.😉 Still, in a car, maybe a small 50€ microwave and a 12-to-220V converter would function and be a little cheaper?

If you have a adjustabe power supply..buck boost system. You could run on ac if you tech it out. Maybe at least over 1000 watts at 40 volts power supply. More watts the better for efficiency.

Is there a way to turn off the insufferable beeping sound? All microwaves suffer from this, but some you can at least turn it off.
