Hey kids, namely Cynthia and Gordon!! My war with the British is over and has actually turned into an empathetic trek to find a brother! Skipping politics, moving straight into the hope that Mr. Manchester, Mr. New Castle, whomever and I can learn Spanish together and honestly, I feel wonderful about this decision. Estaba bajando las escaleras cuando TE vi (a ti). Se necesita el pronombre 'Te'; luego 'a ti' es opcional, si quieres enfatizar :) Cx

Well, there isn't usually a fixed unbreakable rule with Imp/ Pret. Typically for thing thet you did as a routine, we would use the Imperfect.

Ustedes sólo hablan del preterito indefinido y del preterito imperfecto. Pero están usando marcadores temporales como "este mañana" que según mi escuela exigen el preterito perfecto: Este mañana he hablado con mi madre. Feliz Navidad

Jorg: Si todavía no ha terminado la mañana, puedes usar el Present Perfecto. Pero, fuera de ese periodo, deberías usar el Imperfecto y Pretérito. para usar el Perfecto, tienes que estar en ese periodo de tiempo.

'De repente' is mostly followed by preterite, but not always. The best option is to know if it's a finished action or an ongoing one within the story :) Cx

Esperad un minuto! Siempre me enseñaban que hace falta usar *siempre* el pretérito perfecto con esta mañana, esta semana etc., que decir "tuve" aquí no es correcto. Hay que decir "esta mañana he ido al parque". No?? (Cuando fui a Chile tenía que aprender a usar estos tiempos de una forma distinta como ahí no se usa tanto el pretérito perfecto. Aaaargh!)

I understood maybe 50% of what was said. But the concept of which one to use is still so confusing to me. I can only think the preterite is something that happened just once and is finished. But the imperfect is an action which WAS being done but we don't know exactly when or it is used when something else happened. I went down the stairs and fell - fell when you got to the bottom of the stairs. I WAS going down the stairs AND I fell. Two actions, going down the stairs but we don't know when and I fell while going down the stairs. Oh lord that explanation is very complicated and no doubt wrong.

If you say: Bajé las escaleras y me caí = The action of going down the stairs is finished and then, you fell. If you say: Bajaba las escaleras y me caí= You were still in the process of going down the stairs when you fell, so you didn't complete the action. Cx

Gordon, please allow me to make this observation for your Spanish. U and I are weak when we are learning Spanish. What am I saying? The vowels U and I are weak, meaning, when combined with a strong vowel, A, E, O they no longer make TWO sounds. Tiempo. Tiem-po. If I say it the way you say it in this video, it is Ti-em-po and that´s not correct. Es-ta-ción because an accent doesn´t invalidate this rule! We still have only one syllable Es-ta-ción. U and I are weak. A, E, O are strong. Two strong vowels are two separate syllables, always. Fe-o. Bien. One syllable.

Pretérito es un termino difuso. Cuando os referís a pretérito, os referís al indefinido por lo que veo. Utilizáis mal la terminología : pretérito perfecto: he hecho, pretérito imperfecto: hacía, andaba, pretérito indefinido:hice, fui, probé, pretérito pluscuamperfecto: había hecho.

Hola :) Utilizamos la terminología que se usa en los libros de gramática anglosajones. El pretérito ( indefinido): hablé, dije... El imperfecto (pretérito imperfecto): hablaba, decía... Al pretérito perfecto lo llaman el Presente Perfecto. Seguimos esa terminología :) Cx
