.410 Brass Shotshell Follow-Up

I have an entire bucket full of fired .303 Berdan primed brass. What I have been doing is drilling through the firing pin indentation, and subsequently, the Berdan anvil with a #4 countersink bit. This gets rid of the Berdan anvil and creates a shoulder for the flange of a new 209 primer at the same time. Then I finish by drilling with a letter B drill. This creates the right size hole for a 209 primer. Then, since .303 rims are a little too thick, I trim the rim on the case very slightly so that it will chamber. Usually enough to take the headstamp away. It may be best to do this prior to drilling, so that one can get the correct depth with the countersink bit for the 209 flange. One can fire-form, but that wastes powder. I anneal, then gradually size up, and up, until it's 'close enough'. Then I just let a shot load do the rest of the forming. This may be complicated to some, and it takes some time, but it's a way to re-purpose the Berdan brass.

Use 9.3x72R or .303 British bases with large pistol primers. Works like a charm.

I reload them with same data as 2 1/2" and they shoot just fine.😊

I use cardboard over-powder cards, then a Claybuster wad in mine. Produces nice patterns that both bust clays and kill squirrels well!

+Drpermer Thanks for your suggestions! I have pattern tested the load I use and it performs as well as most factory .410 loads on the market at typical squirrel distances. I haven't tested using any sort of shotcups or plastic wadding. One main reason is that I don't like the look of wads laying around in the woods. I heard about people making their own over-powder and overshot cards but I haven't done that yet. Cheers!

Can they hold a 45 long projectile with the shotgun load

I don't know if they will hold them OR if that would be safe to fire if it did.

Lets see. A 45 round is .452 in dia. A 410 is .410 in dia. I'm not sure you could get the 45 down the 410 barrel with a steel rod and a hammer.

I wish magtech brass shotshell hulls came with 209 shotgun primers instead of large pistol primers

I find large pistol primer better. I don't have to stock as many of another primer type.
