410 TSS/Steel Duplex Pattern Review!!! Multiple 410 Duck Hunting Bird Smashing Patterns!!!

Hey folks,
Today we'll be looking at several 410 patterns that I've shot over a period of time. Patterns using 10 TSS as well as 8.5 TSS. Also some duplexed with 4, 5 and 6 steel. All show similar but different results.

I am working on some 3/4 ounce. loads of 7 1/2 shot lead using the steel 410 BP TPS wad . so far it looks promising not letting the pattern open up as fast from my Mossberg O/U.

Those were all very good patterns. I am going to pattern my 1/2 oz #7 tss - 1/2 oz #5 steel 28 gauge loads tomorrow. Going to try C, IC, and M just to get some references.

Yes, Try them all at the range you intend to kill. I normally pattern at max lethal range for steel and 40 with TSS. Every gun will pattern differently for sure. You may get great results with IC or Mod in your 28

@@bullet225ho So I was running a #5 steel and #7 duplex and I tried Skeet and IC. I had a hard time differentiating the steel from the TSS, and the pattern was still a little too open for my liking. I am going to load a few more and try Mod. I don't think I would go any tighter than Mod.

Which do you prefer more for ducks and geese - the 28ga or the 410? Might be a good idea for a video. Thanks for the info.

Can you share a 2.5" win aahs hull load with #9 tss and tps wad? Wad trim length etc? All i can scrounge up are tons of 2.5"

Love your video on the 3” 410 duplex. Do you have a recipe for 410 duplex in the 2 1/2” Winchester HS hulls?

Not yet! I'm heading out for an elk trip on the 29th of Aug. I should be back around the 15th of Sept. At that point I'm going to be submitting lot's of different stuff for testing and making available at my site bullet225ho.com

Do you find much difference in the pattern if the steel is below the tss? Also have you found tighter chokes blow the pattern or just make it too tight?

Yes, Steel on top always produces a larger spread quicker. In the 410 yes, Cyl is a little too open for me (others have claimed that Cyl gives a good pattern) In my gun I/C is great and tighter chokes do tend to make it too tight.

Are you adding the steel to take up the extra room in the hull due to the density of the tss? Can you load straight tss with filler ? Thx for sharing your knowledge

Yes and yes. For waterfowl the steel on top helps the pattern open up quicker with the TSS. Without the steel you end up with a super tight pattern well past 50yds. I'm working on a straight TSS load in higher velocities that hopefully will open the TSS up. Keep an eye out for it.

Have you ever used stretch wax instead of tps wad. I get mixed info. Close buddy of mine has shot many rounds with tss through stretch wad with no issues.

It's a personal preference thing. If you feel comfortable shooting TSS or HW-15 through your gun with no wad then a stretch wad will be fine for him or anyone else. It may take a long time (depending on the number of shots) but TSS will have it's way with forcing cones and chokes without TPS wad protection. I'm ok with steel shot manufactured to SAAMI spec through a bare barrel, but I'm not ok with TSS or HW-15 through a bare barrel. I'm experimenting with some milled TPS wads and TSS duplexed loads. I'm not going to publish anything as of yet as I just haven't shot enough.

Where do you get your reloading data that allows you to make these duplex loads in a 410?

Some I've gotten from friends....others i've devoloped myself. I have pressure testing equipment that gets me close. Then I send loads off to be tested using SAAMI approved methods.

Steel BBs gets 1.5" of gel penetration at 71 yards, tss 9s gets it at 73 yards
