The Cold Steel XL Tanto Voyagers have been my go to Mega Folders to carry for about the last 15 to 16 years or so. I own all of the different Voyagers that have been made in the Large and XL Sizes. The Voyagers are some of the Original, Andrew Demko/Cold Steel, Tri-Ad Designs that Andrew made for Cold Steel; they're true Cold Steel Classic and Staple Folders. And, they're one of my All-Time Favorites! Great Video! These are great Folders to recommend for Hard Work and Self-Defense. I think for these purposes they're extremely hard to beat at any price. In my opinion, it's the Best Bang for your Buck! The Voyagers are an exceptional value. Again, great Video, Bro! :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

I've carried the 5.5" ColdSteel Talwar for 10 years. Nutnfancy called it the pocket sword 😅. The talwar serves as my pistol back up, or for use in close-in situations like an animal attack for example. It still has its factory edge (which is WICKED SHARP). In 10 years the edge has only touched 1 post-it note and 1 tomato to test sharpness. Amaizing blade.

I don't leave my home without an Cold Steel XL in my pocket, for over 2 years now AND that Tanto right there, is definitely in my rotation!!! Great video Daniel... Oh, and I've iced picked the HELL out of the tri-ad lock (had to see for myself on my old, heavy punching bag!)on just about ALL of my XL's and LG Cold Steel knives and man, not a PEEP of play on "any" of em!!!

I remember that Cold Steel video. Lynn Thompson mentioned that a big knife can do what a small knife can do, but not vice versa. Anyway, I own 4 Cold Steel XL folders (Voyager XL Tanto, Drop, Clip and Counter Point XL). They stay at home, while their 4 inch "little brothers" I EDC in the streets. I like keeping my Cold Steel folders in the family! You could possibly icepick grip a Voyager XL, but a knife with a straighter handle, like my Counter Point XL, would be more comfortable. The curved handle Voyagers are better suited for forward handle grip styles, for utility or self dense, in my honest opinion. Great video!

I like folding knives cause there's no sheath to lose. I just got a cold steel t lite and Frenzy 2 and I am enjoying them. They are such a pleasure to play around with in the woods where no one can be scared by a Goth with a giant pocket knife. I usually wear a full face of makeup as well the clothes and accessories of Goth fashion so people can get really freaked out by vampire playing with Big knives.😊 Love the videos 🖤🩶🤍

That's my EDC and I have two of them. It sits in my right hand pocket of my jacket. I do not use pocket clips, ever. Sometimes I carry it in my back pocket on certain pairs of pants. But it's always close by. It snaps out fast into action and I close it with one hand also. Point it on a 45 toward the ground and push in the back lock. When the blade breaks just bring it up and the blade will drop in closed. Pointing it down prevents it from swinging closed on your fingers. And when you bring it up your fingers are clear. Opening and closing is fast with this knife. I do the same with my two Cold Steel SR-1 Lite models. Years ago when they came out with the original Cold Steel Tanto Voyager. It was an impressive like 4 inch blade. There wasn't really anything much this big at the time. I got one right away and they were pretty pricey. I removed the pocket clip and carried it in an on your belt case with a belt loop and a cover that closed with velcro. I loved that thing and carried it everywhere, everyday for years. Haven't used it for years but it sits with many other of my family of Cold Steel Knives in one of my display cases. I was in Home Depot one winter and I needed to buy 6 feet of this plastic trim I was going to put on the edge of a table I was making. I looked around for about ten minutes and couldn't locate someone to cut off what I needed and write me a ticket with the ID number to present to the cashier. I had some kind of Flu Bug and wasn't feeling so good. So I was in a hurry. I decided to do some self serve action. So I wrote the product number down, then I wheeled off the length I needed measuring with my tape measure. A twenty five foot tape measure is also one of my EDCs. Just as I was preparing to cut the length of trim I needed. Along comes this young chick asking me what I'm doing. I told her that I couldn't find anyone so I'm helping myself. She said, "I couldn't do that." I told her that she was too late. I very quickly brought my original Tanto Voyager out and snapped it open, cut my trim. And her eyes bugged out and she stepped backed without saying another word. I took it to the cash, gave the number, paid and left. I guarantee, no matter what the situation. You snap out that Voyager XL, with that loud click as it opens, what comes with it is instant respect.

Great video. I’ve been a fan, Collecter and User of Cold Steel since 1997 and I Absolutely Love them Knives. I Carry an XL Drop Point Voyager Every day and yes it does scare a lot of people and whenever I get Questioned why I carry it my Answers are always the same and people do understand. I carry an XL cause I’m able to Cut and open Objects Easily, I Prefer to carry a blade that can do everything that small knife can’t and my Favorite Answer Cause I can. I’m so use to carrying my XL Voyager now that all my 2.5”-4” blades feel like Mini’s. I would Highly Recommend not to Deploy and Cut your Meals up out in Public with the XL Espada though. I found out why that is a Horrific Idea.

I’m not a voyager guy, more of a talwar guy. The handles are similar in shape, though different materials. I wouldn’t hesitate to use it icepick grip edge out, aka reverse grip edge out. It’s the most comfortable way for maximum stabbing power when long reach isn’t necessary and you can get in close. The triad lock’s the strongest lock and I trust my fingers on it. I might be a bit worried if I had to penetrate through something hard and slippery like a car hood. Against a living target? Not worried at all. The edge in ice pick grip’s not the most comfortable, so I’d not use it ever.

I own both a Ti-Lite VI and a Luzon XL,and love them both. I also had a Luzon Medium as an EDC utility knife but has gone MIA. The Ti-Lite is all metal and fairly heavy. The Luzon is much lighter, like the Voyager it opens quick. Cold Steel has done an excellent job on all their XL folders. The only problem is there are too many options! Deciding on which one you want is difficult 'cause they're all good.

I love my XL Vaquero, as I mentioned before. To be honest a 5.5" blade isn't cartoonish at all in actual use, and it's not that hard to choke up for say peeling a fruit or something. What really kills some big blades for finer tasks actually is the weight, not the length, and Voyagers are pretty light considering the size. The only issue preventing me from using XL blades more as a standalone EDC are the long handles. Sometimes you need to use your knife in confined spaces and when you choke up all that extra butt ends up banging against all sorts of stuff (try peeling an apple in your car for example). I keep a small Opinel or something like that on me as a secondary for that kind of situation, but overtime carrying two blades can get annoying to some.

To open this dialog, I'm a BIG fan of Cold Steel. Cold Steel and Spyderco make up the major share of my "kept" blades. The balance of the collection are mostly all pretty handles and such, but the two majority share holders have been with me starting in the mid 1980's. Then again, I'm old enough to remember buying my first real KaBar Mk2 Fighter at $30 retail, just out of high school. Pastimes like you and I enjoy are not very welcome in the place I live; they have very curious and often conflicting laws out here, many of which are classified as damned if you do and damned if you don't type laws designed to make one either run afoul of a city law, or run afoul of a state law by simply obeying one or the other law, like open carry in a sheath. So folders do rule the day out my way, at least in the most populous county which is my neighbor. That said, the Voyager XL class is the one class of CS tools that I have zero of, which does seem a bit strange upon reflection. My two most frequently carried tools are both serrated, though they are never carried alone. One tool is for emergencies only and the other EDC item is a slip joint folder for public display if called upon; only ne'er-do-well's with bad intent might see the emergency tool, though hopefully not, while John Q may see the other tool slicing a steak, cutting some twine, or opening a letter. There is one Voyager XL that is on my mind though, that is a serrated Vaquero model. Again, nothing but an emergency tool out this way, but like you so eloquently stated, it has a presence when deployed, which might render further unfortunate events unnecessary. After all, nobody really wins a knife fight; one participant goes to the hospital or morgue and the other, well, to prison or gets sued out of existence. Such is life in the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia. Ice pick, or as I call it, hammer grip, is a last choice for any brand of folder. That said, if it became an only choice for some reason, the one brand that might allow one to keep their digits would most likely be a Cold Steel product. The Pocket Bushman comes to mind first, but the grip sucks, then any large folder with a Tri-Ad lock comes in next and is the last possibility for this chicken. There are other tools with double locks, CRKT's M16 or M21 with their auto-lock come to mind, but for the most part, with other double locks you need to slide something into place to engage it, by the time you deploy that extra step, you've probably been cut. As always and in most pursuits, practice makes for fewer screw-ups. May God have mercy on us all.

Good video as usual. I wholeheartedly agree that using a good folding knife in the ice pick(sometimes called the reverse grip) is not something I prefer because of even the remote possibility of the blade collapsing/folding. You posted a video a while back about an OTF(Out the front) knife and you alluded to not being comfortable using stabbing techniques with it and again I agree. I carry various knives(folding/fixed blades) depending on what I'm doing that day. I also train in Escrima every day with the particular blade I'm going to carry. Being retired has its' perks...:) The Raja II is a future purchase because I like your review on it and I think it will be a good addition to my current carry rotation. One thing that is nice about a good longer folding knife that sticks out of the ends of your hand when closed is that you can use it to give hammer fist strikes more impact. There are Escrima techniques that use Pocket Sticks and it's worth researching if you want to learn more about this topic. I think the Raja II will give me options I don't currently have considering that all my current folding knives have blades of between 3 to 4 inches. Keep up the great work. Frank in South Texas.

The triad lock is the strongest locking system imo. It doesn’t have the weird button that you can accidentally disengage like the shark and atlas lock. If you aren’t stabbing into a brick wall or a car hood, why worry? All my xl folders with triad lock are sturdy.

I have both the voyager xl Kris and xl vaquero serrated. What you said about reach is right on. The way the handle is configured you get a rock solid grip holding it at the furthest back position and it makes for over 8 inches of knife extending out past your gripping hand- that’s like having the reach fixed blade with an 8 inch blade. You’re also right on that anyone seeing that length pointed at them is going to have their animal survival brain go- “NO.” We instinctively know in our guts if there is a very high likelihood of getting cut. Still looking forward to when you get an xl espada in your hand and you I’ll feel that safety factor you feel with the voyager xl be multiplied a few times brother!😢

I've been thinking about getting this one because I want a large folder. Where I live, I can carry any size folder concealed but fixed blades need to be sheathed and fully visible at all times. I don't really want people to know that I'm carrying a knife in public, it can freak them out. Those are the reasons I carry a folder and not a fixed blade.

What do I think... What do I THINK! I made a promise to myself and a good friend to not buy any more knives. I've already broken that promise. So I might as well go whole hog. So, what do I think. I think it will be in my collection soon :)

It's a great knife but It's illegal in most countries to carry this length of knife. I carry a CS mini Recon Tanto knife on one end of a 18-in dog choker chain. Basically it's a chain that has two 1-in steel rings at either end. That way I can carry the legal length knife and when I flick the chain the blade automatically opens and I have a knife at the end of a steel whip. There is a Chinese martial art that uses a knife at the end of a rope.

I like folders, but I can’t see any point in carrying a folder that big when I could just carry a fixed blade and in most places folders that big aren’t even legal to carry

When I was bouncing in clubs years ago, I always carried a xl voyager tanto every day. One night about 3, two meth heads tried to force their way in, with framing hammers as weapons. They wanted to rob the place. It was after close so the doors locked and would only open from the inside, so the attempt to rush the door didn't work. I came out because people were shouting for me and found myself face to face with two dudes holding framing hammers. They both jumped when I pulled the knife out, which I did immediately. When I walked at one of them holding the knife, they both broke and ran. Tried to hit me with their car. The knife scared the hell out of them and they literally ran.

Knives are supposed to be felt , not seen. Especially in the U.S where people carry firearms. Dangerous!

a large folding knife is stupid. could never be better than a fixed blade. where you going to carry it? Won't fit in a pocket?

This one fits nicely. Im primarily a fixed blade guy, but I can see the allure with this. Dudes walk around comfortably with folders bigger than this in their pockets such as the rasha and espada
