I’m with my man Charlie on this one. Stop censoring content of a different era. How are we to know how much we have evolved as a species if everything gets censored and we aren’t able to have discussions regarding it. A trigger warning for those easily offended can also work like how The Boys did with their last eps of season 3.

I would clarify, 'how much our opinions have evolved as a society', as a better way to state this sentiment; although I find much of modern society recently to be regressive. Evolution is defined wrong in all our dictionaries, or perhaps has no coupling to the Darwinist theory, so I understand why people constantly misuse it but the misunderstanding of it can cause some real problems as we have seen in the theory's short history. Evolution is slow and we are hardly different than anyone from thousands of years ago, evolution does not have a direction unless you believe in intelligent design, more evolved does not mean better but that changes occurred and were adapted to.
@tekeguy682 жыл бұрын
It's because we transitioned to a society that no longer relies on a "reasonable person" interpretation---how would a reasonable person react. We have shifted to "most offended person" level of interpretation which, shocker, makes everything offensive to at least someone. As it gets worse, somebody with more resources than myself is going to make a fortune creating a media outlet that accumulates and provides a censor free reruns and movies.

I agree with Charlie. People should be able to watch something for themselves, and decide how it fits into their life. And if they find it offensive they can just not watch. Not a single person on this earth is forced to watch It's Always Sunny. Sure some people will get the wrong message, but that isn't the show's responsibility. But taking episodes down in an attempt at moral grandstanding, while the company that took it down, funds talking heads to complain about "cancel culture" or "wokeness" or "PC culture" or whatever the buzz word of the week is, seems more wrong than anything the episode had, even out of context.

The Auto Motion Plus thing is basically for sport and TV. It's a frame rate smoothing thing that fakes a picture that looks higher refresh rate than the source. If you're trying to make something look real then higher frame rates help sell the illusion, so someone watching the news on their TV will see a live broadcast, notice how "real" it looks, and then think the TV is great. They don't understand that movies deliberately use a lower frame rate to achieve a specific feel...so that setting that's making the football look weirdly lifelike, is also making their movies look like soap operas, because auto-motion is upscaling their frame rate to normal broadcast televisions 59hz. Most TVs specifically have a button that will change it to "Movie" mode that turns auto motion off. And the auto motion setting is usually called something like sport. The reason they are usually on that mode by default is that it's what makes stuff that they usually play on TVs for sale look good. News, sport, videos of nature.

I'm so happy you guys are talking about that soap opera effect. I do not know why TVs do this, and literally all hotel TVs are like this now, no option to change.
@fugchugson2 жыл бұрын
Motionflow/automotion plus/etc. just interpolates frames to 60 fps. Most TV is at 24 or 30 fps, but having sports at a higher framerate makes it much easier to watch. Everything else doesn't look right, or like how the creator intended it to look. It also doesn't do a very good job of interpolating, and often doesn't have the power to deliver a consistent framerate, so there's lots of hitches. It's also a default setting on most TVs now, which is really stupid because the average user doesn't know how to turn it off. They're essentially trying to make it a thing by forcing it on people.
@Joe90h2 жыл бұрын
I remember seeing some sort of behind the scenes of a film production documentary in 4k at a friend's house very briefly (It might have been Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, I genuinely can't remember), and it was obvious the cameras from fifteen/twenty years ago wouldn't have had that level of detail or the amount of frames so everything was sort of smoothed over and it had automotion plus... It just seemed so weird that they would put in all those after effects on that, of all things.
@rars0n2 жыл бұрын
60 FPS is only the tip of the iceberg. Most TVs are "120 Hz" now, which means they're adding even more interpolated frames. A lot of newer TVs will advertise 240 FPS or 480 FPS. These are TVs which insert blank frames in between the interpolated frames in order to lower the image persistence. The bigger problem with modern TVs is that "turning everything off" no longer avoids all of the processing. That's why Charlie still notices some of the effect even after he's turned everything off. Generally, the more processing the TV does to the image, the larger the latency is. When you're watching a movie or a TV show, the latency doesn't matter, hence manufacturers will leave the processing on by default based on whatever "looks best" (obviously a VERY subjective opinion). For gaming, you want the lowest latency possible and the processing adds nothing. That's why most TVs have a "gaming mode" that you have to actually enable to turn the processing down to a minimum. The first (and only) HDTV I bought was in 2010, it's a cheap 39" Emerson that actually looks decent after some tweaking. It's not nearly as thin as Dennis' flatscreen TV, or as big, but it has zero "smart" features and doesn't screw with the image. I refuse to buy a smart TV since I mostly use my TV with my computer connected to it and I have no need for built-in functions that get in the way of the TV's normal operation, never mind the fact that said functions are inferior to standalone devices and act as additional attack vectors on my home network. Soap opera effect is actually very low on my gripe list when "smart" features exist. Luckily computer monitors have increased in size and work great for barebones displays that don't have any of the smart crap or useless processing of modern TVs. That's the way to go now. TVs are, ironically, cheaper, but in this case it's worth it to pay more for less.

As a creator who is older than 21 in present year, I remember when it was a given that works of fiction are orecisely that, and that fiction did not have to be a morality play - in fact, some of the most nefarious creatures exist in fiction. Does it mean that the creator should be censored because the villain was too scary? Pfft. Might as well censor Lord of the Rings because Sauron was gonna destroy everything, and we don't want anyone getting any bright ideas 😂

I think the two most important things with any joke is who/what are we laughing at and are we, the audience, supposed to laugh at them/it. Lets take Dee's blackface. Like you guys said, the joke isn't on the minorities in the scene or race in general, but on the ignorance/racist character of Dee. We as the audience know the joke is on Dee with everyone's reaction to her speech. On how crazy it is and the palpable awkwardness/cringe we as the audience feels. Another example is when Robert Downey Jr did blackface in tropic thunder. Same premise. The thing is, should the nuance matter. In the end, yes it should. We should be able engage in the conversation first and explore the nuance before we decide whether we take down media/content. One of the problems though is that nuance is complicated. We perfer simple answers to complex questions. Only with hindsight where we love nuance.
