I well remember being in Barkerville.. in 1958, Dan... it was just opening up at that time.. Not certain if you are that old.. but Century Sam was here [he was our neighbour in Courtenay at the time.. He took my mother up on stage at the Theatre Royal and gave her a 'difficult' time... all in jest though... Sid Williams was a real character. The town was not much in those days... only a very few refurbished buildings... but the seeds were there

What a great living museum. Always a treat to visit them. This one seems very interactive. Nice. We have one near me in the UK called Beamish. It has a mine of black gold (coal) that visitors can go down as well as 2 historically recreated towns, a brewery and working trams from the late 18's/early 19 hundreds. Great fun

We (finally) had the pleasure to visit Barkerville in 2020 (Sept). we met Mrs. Hodgkinson and she was a wealth of information for the area (she referred to my Sister and Brother in law as "Overlanders" because they were visiting from Ontario). We were there right between the 1st and 2nd wave of Covid so not everything was open to see, however it was a fantastic and memorable trip for sure. I Highly Recommend it.

Seeing Barkerville's Chinatown brought memories back for me. My wife's grandparents emigrated from China to California and Oregon. Her paternal first came over when he was 12, worked for a couple years around Sacramento, then went back to China for a wife... During his first time over here, he developed a reputation for honesty, and with some prospecting and mining still ongoing at the time, he was tasked with bringing in their take from the miners ... nobody expecting a Chinese kid to be carrying gold with him. Barkerville sounds like a great place to visit for a day or three.

If you haven’t heard it’s a small little place near Durango Colorado and the operation that’s there in Silverton is quite historic and valuable to mining history. I miss Barkerville has been 21 years since last vist. Yes I was 12 years old and didn't appreciate it as much as I would today. But now I have kids and need a second black and white photo to update the wall. Very much so wish I was a little older to be able to remember most of the stuff I saw/heard. All I do know is that is where I first learned to pan for gold and definitely started my gold fever. That and on the same trip went to Atlin bc and also went to Skagway. And saw the Graves from the famous chillkoot avalanche. And held a 30oz nugget. Good stuff love it. Thanks Dan for the childhood memories!

I haven't visited there since I was a teenager travelling with my parents. My Grandfather Thomas Parsons of Victoria donated a lot of the tools and equipment of the cabinet shop to Barkerville. It had belonged to my greatgrandfather Alfred Henry Knott who made player pianos back East early last century. We had a Knott player piano while I was young but my parents sold it , apparently to Spirit Lake Lodge , which was buried in the mud flows when Mt St Helens went up. I do have memories of one of us kids pumping the pedals and the other pretending to play. Wish we still had it.

This is basically my back yard. I grew up very close there still in a very high gold rush neighborhood from there. You were right about the Chinese when you mentioned they would follow old claims and re work the tailings. I was working this one claim in Hixon B.C, just North of Barkerville, and the excavator picked up two stone carvings for human feet that were carved by the Chinese back in those days. We also unearthed old picks, and other tools. My claim is 48 km North of Barkerville if you continue the back roads, and I am very fortunate to have found Virgin ground in this area And if any viewers haven't been to Barkerville, and live in Canada, or is going to travel through to Alaska, I highly recommend the trip there. It is just about an hour East of Quesnel British Columbia Canada. Packed full of entertainment. Great for the whole family. And last time I was there, it was wheelchair friendly also for the most part. My dad was in a wheelchair and he was able to see most things back in the late 80's, so I am sure it is much better today Barkerville also used to do a mail run in the winter with sled dogs for Canada Post , I am not sure if they still do that or not ??
