I have been using this method: 1. connect headphones to headphone jack. 2. make sure the volume is turned up on corresponding headphone knob and button beneath it is set to Main 3. if you ONLY want headphones (no monitors) turn off or set volume to zero on the monitors themselves (not mixer). this is annoying, but it's the least convoluted solution

you can check page 55 to change the functionality of the solo button. Although still not intuitive, the solo button can act as a true solo. the default is pre fader, in order to hear a mix before it hits the mains (pan, eq, comp etc) check the updated manual. I also assume that you must have the latest firmware.

Thanks for the demo. They should have left more room on the deck of the Model 12 for post it notes, taped labels and instructions for using it effectively. Tascam's directions assume a larger knowledge base than I have. For some odd reason, when using the solo bus, the Aux 1 knobs can be used to set headphone levels of each track, sometimes. It's more confusing than it has to be with not much info on the PLF/ALF buttons. I'd get it working for playback, hit the wrong button and lose the sound. The Model 12 is more live mixer than recording mixer. Too many bus switches, too many routing choices, a confusing array of on/off switches scattered around, a block diagram that is made as small as possible. It tries to be all things for all occasions and makes it confusing to sort out how its supposed to work if you don't have a live mixing background. My learning curve includes determining which functions I will never use and turning them off or out.
@RecordingStudio9
@RecordingStudio9 3 жыл бұрын
Model 12 being digital, and looking at the signal flow diagram, it shouldn't be that hard to add (program) a new option to have the headphone Amp pre/post Main Fader and this will solve all the problem. Having 2 headphones and not being able to use them, is a short sight by Tascam, especially when they are aiming this model for 'Home Studio' setup. Having said that, most live mixers would work this way so the live mixing engineer can solo PFL/AFL of each channel without interrupting the main outputs. But not in a multitrack recording and mixing environment. Hope they'll have an update to solve this issue. Thanks for the video.
@424Recording
@424Recording 3 жыл бұрын
100%. It's cool that it is setup for a live setting but for home recording, it is confusing, especially coming from the 424 or a DP. This seems to be the biggest point of confusion for a lot of people. It would be cool if an update could help solve the issue! Cheers!

Hey why not just connect the monitor speakers to a separate channel strip and just switch on/off? No need for headphone amp saves space and outlet?
@424Recording
@424Recording 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that could work. I guess I didn't like the idea of constantly powering the monitors on and off; I'm also used to being in a mixing environment where they can be muted. Depending on mix session and what's going on, the monitors would need to be turned on and off dozens of times. But that's another workaround for sure! Thanks for watching

3rd option: Get a Mackie Big Knob and turn knob down when you only want to hear audio from headphones. It works great for me. Plus, the Big Knob is completely passive (non-powered) and has 2 sets of switchable inputs and outputs. Best $50 I ever spent! 😎
@424Recording
@424Recording 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, Matt! I've been thinking about you, man. I hope you're doing well! I take it the Big Knob has a separate headphone level knob, and you're running the monitors thru the Big Knob? That sounds like I really good way to do it!
@schizoinstereo
@schizoinstereo 3 жыл бұрын
@@424Recording I'm doing good man. I hope you are too! The Big Knob has 2 pair of 1/4 inch inputs and 2 pair of 1/4 inch outputs. (oh and a 3.5mm audio input) It has selectable buttons to pass signal from/to whichever source you want. Like INPUT A or B to OUTPUT A or B (in any combination) It also has a very useful MONO button to check if your mix sounds right in mono, a mute button and a DIM button to lower volume quickly. I run 2 recording units into it and just use the headphone out on whichever recorder I'm using at the time. I will eventually connect my other pair of reference monitors so I can switch back and forth between them to see how my mixes translate. I know that was alot haha but it's super simple but makes my setup easier with everything hooked up at once.

Thanks for the video, I also struggled with that. I somehow found how to route it but I wouldn’t even be able to explain how (probably the solo bus method), I just figured it out at some point and I thought « man why is it so complicated just to route my setup to headphones while not playing on the monitors ? ».

Yessss, I ran into the exact same issue. Thought I could brute force my way through without using the manual. I think I am starting to understand it now. Actually, using the sub output really shored up my understanding. I guess I am also spoiled coming from digital interfaces, where the headphones have their own set of knobs and you plug in and go. I'm going to do a full run down of the solo bus in my next Model 12 video. I was going to include the info in this video but there was a lot to cover. I'm also still not sure I understand it 100%. Because the headphone outputs are internally wired to the main output fader as well... very annoying and a major flaw. But it's not complicated though, to have more flexibility, headphone outputs and volume, you could use headphone distributor. Or use the sub out for your speakers, if you would like to use the device's headphone output.
@alexandrosroussos
@alexandrosroussos 3 жыл бұрын
@@pjsnijdersmusic I kind of managed to have headphone/master separate volume with some routing, but to be honest, I don't even remember how I accomplished that. Most monitors don't have their own volume adjustment and it's not very practical to have another piece of equipment in the middle just for that. They should really make a tutorial specifically about that use case which is quite common on a home studio.

I want to master my compositions from Ableton live to my Akai GX-4000D tape deck in DAW mode. But no matter what routing or configuration I attempt, NO SIGNAL comes out of the sub outs. None, zero, ziltch. What the heck is the sub out even for if I can't get a signal out of it? What am I doing wrong? This should be a very simple thing on a mixing board. There should be a sub output engage button that sends sub out signals to whatever we have it plugged into, or is this just too much to ask? lol Thanks in advance for your help!
