Mike, Watching this video one of the important instructions I didn't see was at what db level do you recommend setting the monitors at. I have read with analog mixers it is Unity and with digital mixers it is negative 18db to a negative 20bd. Perhaps you covered that in one of your other videos that I have yet to watch. @dirkpehrke99092 жыл бұрын
So true. I like the Tascam a lot, if you have a bit of experience with mixers it is very convenient and easy to operate. But the monitor section including the headphone outs left me confused more than once. The main critical issue I have with the otherwise really brilliant Model 12 is that you can't mute the main out and still have the main signal on headphones. This makes it necessary to switch your monitors off, if you just want to listen with headphones. I know that one could use the sub out for the monitors, but if you need the sub for other purposes you're forced to use an addiontal headphone amp or monitor controler or really climb behind your monitors and switch them off.

Hey, so I made a discovery and am happy to report that the headphones does not need solo sends to have sound work through it. The headphones work off of the main fader just like the main monitors. Sound happens simultaneously through the headphones and the mains. If you have all buttons off except for the main sends on the channels you will get sound through the main out and headphones at once. Just unplug your mains if you want headphones only. I think people default to turning down the main fader in order to use the phones. They aren’t separate. Main fader is needed for both.

Thanks for the detailed video. I thought the SOLO Bus was a mono bus, ok during tracking, but any stereo playback on the MTR or PC return will also be mono. Am I correct?
@424Recording3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Honestly, I get confused about this and I hope that it isn't confusing in the video. SOLO bus is a mono bus. The one thing I forgot and didn't mention in this video is that you can hear the headphones as well as the monitors on MAIN but the issue is if you want to only hear the headphones, you have to power down your monitors. For my workflow, this doesn't work very well. The benefit of using the SOLO bus (even though it is mono) is that you can have your headphones on a separate bus, independent of MAIN. I should have mentioned in the video that you can also use the headphones on MAIN while the monitors are playing and they will be in stereo (or you can get a headphone amp and use the SUB bus so the headphones are independent). But yeah, SOLO is a mono bus.

Another great video! I have been using my Model 12 in tandem with my Tascam 414 cassette recorder and your videos have helped me to discover some excellent functionality in both machines and home recording in general. I too was confused about the solo buttons on the Model 12 at first. Until I went into the mixer section on the main menu and discovered that you can assign the solo buttons to function the traditional way (one track playing alone) Or, assign it to AFL/PFL. I didn’t really know how AFL worked until watching this video. I have been using the sub out to go into my 414 and using that as a head phone amp. That or just not turning the monitors on when using the main mix to headphones. Thanks again for the fun videos!
@424Recording3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad it was helpful, Aaron. Tbh, I'm still confused about the Solo bus! I need to do more reading and experimenting. I definitely have them set to AFL. My big thing is needing to mute the monitors when listening back on the headphones, so your 414 solution is brilliant. I'm doing something similar with the headphone amp through Sub. That's something I should have mentioned in the video: you can still hear the headphones through Main without routing them to Solo bus, but there's no way to mute the monitors if you're tracking with headphones. Like you said, you can always turn the monitors off, but it's not always practical with how I record and mix. I'm definitely going to do a dedicated PFL/AFL video once I wrap my head around it! Cheers and thanks for watching! More to come for sure!

It's a shame that this mixer, after a few months of domestic use, began to malfunction as many as 3 knobs, which among other things have non-removable the external plastic parts (if I pulled harder I have the clear feeling that they would break); in practice they only maintain the frequency they indicate if my hands remain in contact with the knob, otherwise as soon as I leave them, they always return to the flat position. If anyone know what the hell could be the problem, hit up. ah...and it has never suffered accidental damage. Unfortunately I immediately noticed an evident fragility of the components.
