www.RoadTestTV.com 1/4 mile drag race between a rare 1970 Cougar Eliminator powered by the legendary 428 Cobra Jet big block and a 1969 Chevelle SS 396 powered by the high winding solid lifter L78 396 rated at 375 horsepower. The Cobra Jet Cougar is 1 of only 182 428 CJ 4 speeds produced in 1970. The L78 Chevelle is also rare as it is 1 of only 1487 turbo 400 L78 Chevelle's built in 1969.

Agreed. 3.91 for the Cougar vs. 4.56 for the Chevelle. If they had the same gearing you have to think the outcome would favor the Cougar.
@SealofPerfection
@SealofPerfection 2 жыл бұрын
@@gordonipock9385 Not really. It's only .55 a turn from 3.91 to 4.56. That's not going to make up an over .3 second differential, and the fact is, the Chevelle still ran more MPH, so it was pulling away at the end. That doesn't change with gearing. Plus, with the power range of the 428, it really doesn't need 4.56 gears. The 396 is a higher revving, smaller motor, which naturally needs more gear than a bigger motor with more torque. Gearing isn't a magic potion where "more is always better". The Cougar was pretty close to the optimum gear, and when you're close, changing it a little doesn't make as much difference as if it had say, 3.08's.
@twasbrillig33
@twasbrillig33 2 жыл бұрын
@@SealofPerfection what would be the magic potion? why did the cougar lose with a bigger engine?
@SealofPerfection
@SealofPerfection 2 жыл бұрын
@@twasbrillig33 It's pretty simple. The Chevelle had a better power to weight ratio. Now whether that means that the Chevelle is lighter or the 396 makes more horsepower, I don't know. I suspect the weights are pretty close, so my guess is the 396 is making more power. Could possibly be a combo of the two. There's no doubt the 396 has better heads so it may well be making more power despite being smaller. But clearly the power-to-weight ratio favors the Chevelle, as evidenced by the higher mph Edit: The 396 is simply making more power. BBC heads are much better than FE heads. So it can give up some cubes and still be making more power. You just can't make an FE run with a BBC, not if you put the same effort into both motors. You'd be better off with a 429/460, as their head were copied from the BBC and are a better design.

Mopar guy here but I love both of these cars...especially that 428 CJ Cougar. First gen Cougars are beautiful cars. Truly an "executive muscle car" like the Buick GS/GSX and Oldsmobile 442/Hurst Olds. And it's really cool to see an L78 in a base Chevelle 300 post coupe. That's a super rare car. They were basically Chevy's equivalent to the Plymouth Roadrunner/Dodge Super Bee and the Ford Fairlane Cobra/Mercury Cyclone CJ...a stripped down 2 door hardtop/coupe with a high performance driveline and little else as far as options. They didn't even have carpet...just rubber floors and a bench seat

There are so many absolutely incredible cars produced by teams of brilliant engineers and design artists, that make automotive history so fascinating. They all must've had so much fun and lead such satisfying lives from a career aspect once the 50s came especially, I'd say. 👍😎🇨🇦 Cheers Buddy!

The L78 was a beast. The 375 peak horsepower factory rating was laughable. I saw a bone stock L78 on an engine dyno and it peaked at 425 horsepower at 6000 rpm. Chevy gave it an honest rating in the 1965 Corvette and the 1965 full size lineup when they rated it at 425 horses but they only rated it at 375 horses in the 1966-69 Chevelle's, 67-69 Camaro's, and the 68-69 Nova's even though the engine was identical to the L78 found in the Corvette and full size cars. They had solid lifters so they didn't have the best street manners but there were also 325 and 350 horse 396's available that had hydraulic lifters for better streetability and lower maintenance. I think the L78 was marketed more towards drag racers. You had to have some mechanical skills to even own any of those high compression solid lifter big blocks

To all those claiming these cars "aren't stock": They are. They've been blueprinted and tuned, but they have stock heads, intake, exhaust manifolds, cam, internals. I'm sure they have shift kits for the auto transmissions. They've been fine tuned, and they have modern rubber and are running on modern track prep, but that's it. Proof is easy: For the Chevelle: It ran 113 mph. 113 mph in a 3400lb car = 378 hp. It was "rated" at 375, and it's well known the factory ratings for most muscle cars were deliberately low. For the Cougar: 110 mph at 3600lbs = 369 hp. They were rated at 335. They are stock, with great tuning.

@SealofPerfection
@SealofPerfection 5 жыл бұрын
Love how you "ignore" those extra 32 cubes the Cougar has and mention the gears the Chevelle has. That wasn't the difference in this race. The Cougar likely had pretty close to the optimum gear already. Chevelle had the gear to put its motor in the RPM range it made power in. So did the Cougar. Adding more gear doesn't just keep knocking huge chunks of time off...the returns are very much diminishing after you get up in the 3.50+ range. Another gear might have taken a tenth off the Cougar, no more.

I love the 69 Cougar. If I found a roller, I think I’d build a nice 400 Ford for it. I wish Ford had offered some different level packages on the 390. The 390 cars could hold their own against the comparable basic 396, but without the solid lifter cam versions and better heads they got eaten up by the higher level 396s. Guess Ford figured if people wanted to go faster they’d get the 428.

And 68-69 is my favorite Chevelle body style. A 70 LS6 is probably the baddest Chevelle ever made but I'll take a 69 Chevelle COPO 427 or a 68-69 Chevelle SS 396/375 over an LS6.
@SealofPerfection
@SealofPerfection 5 жыл бұрын
What else is funny about this one is the Ford fans crying about the rear end gearing. It wouldn't make that much difference. Not the difference between these two, that's for sure. Ask anyone knowledgeable who races a lot and they'll confirm it. First off, you don't pick up that much time going from an already-steep 3.91 to 4.56. Reason why is, you're already pretty close to the optimal gear for that 428, which is the 4.30 gear that was also an option. So when you're not close to the "best" gear for the quarter, like say, a 3.08 gear, changing to that same 3.91 or 4.11 might get you a BIG jump. But when you're already pretty close, it's like any other mod you do to a modded engine....diminishing returns. You're not going to have that huge jump when you're already running 3.91's. So going from 3.91 to 4.30's likely only gets you about a tenth at most. That's not going to catch the Chevelle here. Second: You folks seem to not realize you're crying about gear ratio being the difference when your Ford already has 32 more cubic inches. So the smaller Chevy still won the race, despite being out-cubed by 32" and you guys are talking about gearing? How about we make the gearing AND the engine size the same then? What do you think will happen now?
@SealofPerfection
@SealofPerfection 5 жыл бұрын
Here is proof about the gears: 429 Torino with 4.30's gets outrun by a 442 with 'only' 4.11's AND 29 less cubic inches. I guess having lower gears doesn't mean that much after all? kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYmVaoCNZ66haas

Matt, though the likelyhood of of finding a 67 Fairlane with a 427 SOHC on the street is remote, Ford did indeed build a 427 SOHC and debuted it in 1963. It was rated at 650HP in single four barrel form. I still have the Hot Rod magazine issue from 63. It was on the cover. It was never put in a production car, but Holman and Moody built a couple 67 Fairlanes. www.dragzine.com/news/original-ford-427-sohc-crate-engine-on-ebay-for-65000/

I have to give my opinion. Growing up and driving Chrysler product through the 60's and early 70's. The one car that had to me a superior engine was the 1971 Mercury 429. I had one in a big Mercury Marquis. That 429 2 bbl was equivalent of any 440 I had in a comparable New Yorker. Think it was like 320 hp. Thing about that 429 was the 50 mph to unlimited, power or pull it gave. My buddy made the mistake of buying a 72, same motor. With the emissions and lower compression, it turned to shit, was like a dog. Fun cars up to 1972.
