"Arcarsenal" as the album opener for "Relationship Of Command" is one of the biggest statements they could of made. An absolute epic album.

I agree acrarsenal is an amazing song, one of their best imo. I don't think relationship of command is a great album though. i think it's got a couple of great songs, a couple of ok songs and a bunch i would just skip. i'd gladly take in-casino-out or vaya over ROC.

Let other people decide what they like, no need to hide opinions as a fact. wow they're really on good form here. i remember an interview from noctourniquet era, cedric said atdi for years did opening sets on tour and were at their best with 20 minute sets. Then Relationship made them blow up, and they were asked to play for an hour or more at every gig, and he was completely unprepared to put on good performances of that size. I guess he compensated later with those ridiculous volta sets.

They were sharing tour dates around the Big Day Out shows (along with PJ Harvey) & I think it was actual genuine ‘chumminess’ rather than ironic. In one interview at the time there was some amusing chatter about them collaborating on a country record. ATDI struck me a pretty open-minded bunch so I don’t see why they wouldn’t have got on with Martin & co... who are similarly open minded. I saw Coldplay tour with a bunch of screamy Welshmen called Terris in 2000 & there was plenty of love going back & forth on that tour too.

Oh to listen to them now, talk about the weirdness of the new GWB administration and their hopes that the electoral college will be abolished and a new voting system put in place... I remember those days and how hopeless, fucked up, and dull it felt in the US, especially after 9/11. I would give anything to go back to a time pre 9/11 and pre ATDI break up. Things felt so much lighter then; so much so that most of the things we had to be angsty about were petty bullshit. There were SO many great underground bands and bands like this that came up through the underground scene by touring like mad. I miss that so, so much. I feel like the entire energy of the world was irrevocably changed just a few months after this. And it's just gotten weirder and weirder. At least they're back to help us through this new administration.

Dude... the burning-in-effigy of Bush Jr. was gold, but I really love the jam band-y instrumental parts of this set. I really miss them & that era of music. Mars Volta's fine & great (never got into Sparta), but the raw emotion & power ain't there. To me, Mars Volta seemed like a quest to be "respected."
@sseltcarT8 ай бұрын
But it was the 2000s, man… Going noodly with “prog” and incorporating elements of other stuff like jazz, dub, and salsa into your music for the heck of it were pretty much a suicidal move by marking yourself & your band for ridicule & insults by the public, much less gaining any modicum of respect (maybe unless you were Radiohead); it was actually pretty impressive that they were pretty well received and found an audience back then. I think rather than being “respected”, it seemed to be more of a quest to wing it and be COMPLETELY self-indulgent (which I believe Omar & Cedric themselves would earnestly agree with). Possibly as a retaliation against the strained dynamics within At the Drive-In at that time where every creative input needed the approval of the other band members. Speaking of which, maybe the palpable “raw emotion & power” that we all felt can be credited to the actual tension within the band itself 🤔
