The problem with modern firearms and BP is the fouling, looks like duplex can make a dwindling supply of smokeless go a lot further. As in more shots per pound. Great info in this one!

I'm glad someone had the courage to test this. IIRC, back in the 1970's when I first got into BP, I read that some long range BP match competitors used duplex loads for matches however it was strongly worded that such "practices" were not recommended. BP is a great propellant and anything lowering the amount of fouling (and ostensibly the corrosion factor) is a great idea. Especially those of use cowboy shooters who shoot expensive original firearms and replicas. Yes, being in my 20s' during the 70s' make me old LOL.

With straight black, I cannot get through its 13 round magazine without it getting fouled so badly that it loses all accuracy, so I (gasp - don't tell my mom...) shoot smokeless in it most of the time. By way of contrast, I can shoot my '95 Marlin or '86 Winchester in .45-70 all day long without cleaning with no loss of accuracy, so long as I'm shooting my favorite duplex load ( 7 grains of Reloder 7, 53 grains of Swiss 1.5 Fg, .030 v.f. wad, Lyman #457193 cast from wheelweights and lubed with SPG).

Thank you for this presentation. I've never hand loaded my own ammunition using any kind of a cartridge. Although I have considered investing in something simple to start with. I would not have considered using the duplex loading option to clean up the fouling for the dirtier black powder, just because I don't know any better. A friend of mine had a black powder cap and ball revolver, and we loaded it with about half a cylinder of 3f and topped it off with cornmeal before loading a .36 caliber round ball. It was such a low velocity load that we reused the bullets. We used a powder measure, but I don't remember the load size. That would have been a duplex load, wouldn't it? I'm now thinking the longer rifle barrel might have more time than the seven inch revolver barrel for a more complete burn of the black powder. I'm thinking the revolver will smoke quite a bit more using this same powder recipe. It might make more muzzle flash, too. Was this a compressed load?
@Everythingblackpowder9 ай бұрын
No, since cornmeal doesn’t burn I don’t think that qualifies.

Since you used a "Big Lube" (Mav Dutchman) bullet and SPG, fouling "should not" be a big deal anyway. That was the whole point of why I had the original PRS bullet made (the 45 Colt version upon which the other sizes are based). The idea was to get a bullet, when lubed with a good black powder lube, that would not foul out (lose accuracy) in a two day CASS match when not cleaned at all. That was using GOEX or even Elephant. It will foul the barrel, but not enough to "foul up your accuracy". Have you found different? My only 44/40 is a Winchester '92 DeLux and , gulp, I have to admit that I use Unique in it with the Mav bullet powder coated. I set my charge to yield just at 1,400fps which is safe in the '92. The powder coating prevents leading with my casting alloy. Did you find some leading with your duplex at that speed? PRS

I'm wondering if you use an over powder wad in your b.p. cartridge loads? I've found them to be essential for top accuracy in my large caliber b.p. match rifles. The .60 thick poly wads & Swiss 3f give me the outstanding results in my 40-65 & 45-70 rifles out to 700 yards. I haven't done much black powder experimenting with the pistol type calibers in my rifles though i.e. 38 & 44 wcf.

Sorry if this is slightly off topic . I was looking at formulas for rocket candy, and they speak of the use of red iron oxide as a catalyst to speed up burning. The Haber Bosch process also uses iron oxide to split nitrogen pairs. Has anyone tried to use iron oxide to accelerate the burn rate of black powder? The following was copied from a rocket candy forum. There are many different approaches to making rcandy. The basic formula is potassium nitrate and sugar in a 65:35 ratio. To this you can optionally add 1 to 5% rust (red iron oxide, Fe2O3) Caution: These are not the same, rust is more correctly refered to as hydrated ferric oxide. Hydrated ferric oxide will no catalyze the propellant properly, use true Iron(III) oxide or ferric oxide (Fe2O3) to properly catalyze the fuel. to act as a catalyst. The potassium nitrate (KNO3) can be easily obtained from your local Home Depot in the form of Grants Stump Remover (other stump removers work as well, just read the bottle and look for potassium nitrate). This form of KNO3 is prilled and must be ground to a fine powder to be used. Not if dissolved first which The Haber Bosch process is described in Wikapedia with a section on catalysts.
