The problem with modern firearms and BP is the fouling, looks like duplex can make a dwindling supply of smokeless go a lot further. As in more shots per pound. Great info in this one!

nice idea, but "I noticed" in the CDR,CA (communist democratic republic of Ca) BP is almost "Unobtainium" and has a lot more shipping or handling, or storage costs or drama. more like Smokeless can make your BP go farther, unless you DIY your AMP (antique muzzle loading porpel). BUT I LOVE IT All that goes Bang, Boom, or Bam!

I'm glad someone had the courage to test this. IIRC, back in the 1970's when I first got into BP, I read that some long range BP match competitors used duplex loads for matches however it was strongly worded that such "practices" were not recommended. BP is a great propellant and anything lowering the amount of fouling (and ostensibly the corrosion factor) is a great idea. Especially those of use cowboy shooters who shoot expensive original firearms and replicas. Yes, being in my 20s' during the 70s' make me old LOL.

Jake, your shooting skills are impressive around 200’! Putting the cotton bp in the duplex was a great idea, using what you have at the same time learning the result of the mix. I am all for a cleaner shooting, bc it allows for more shooting before cleaning. Another awesome video!

Brian don’t forget shooting BP need to clean that day but definitely thinking the same might get a long range day with duplex before that cleaning instead of because of all the cleaning between shots. I wonder if it would work with muzzleloaders. Maybe a few grains of Unique against the primer and the Black Powder charge. Certain CVA would adamantly oppose it.

I do duplex .357 for CAS. And that's where my failed powders go. Even if the powder is so bad everything squibs, I just adjust up the smokeless part to where it functions. I have made powder so bad it was little more than filler, and all it was there for was to be used up - and make smoke.

Another outstanding video that didn't suck. I love watching your experiments with the pistol cartridges, as it's something I have never done. I think I'm going to have to start playing with them in my '94 Marlin in .45 Colt. With straight black, I cannot get through its 13 round magazine without it getting fouled so badly that it loses all accuracy, so I (gasp - don't tell my mom...) shoot smokeless in it most of the time. By way of contrast, I can shoot my '95 Marlin or '86 Winchester in .45-70 all day long without cleaning with no loss of accuracy, so long as I'm shooting my favorite duplex load ( 7 grains of Reloder 7, 53 grains of Swiss 1.5 Fg, .030 v.f. wad, Lyman #457193 cast from wheelweights and lubed with SPG).

Thank you for this presentation. I've never hand loaded my own ammunition using any kind of a cartridge. Although I have considered investing in something simple to start with. I would not have considered using the duplex loading option to clean up the fouling for the dirtier black powder, just because I don't know any better. A friend of mine had a black powder cap and ball revolver, and we loaded it with about half a cylinder of 3f and topped it off with cornmeal before loading a .36 caliber round ball. It was such a low velocity load that we reused the bullets. We used a powder measure, but I don't remember the load size. That would have been a duplex load, wouldn't it? I'm now thinking the longer rifle barrel might have more time than the seven inch revolver barrel for a more complete burn of the black powder. I'm thinking the revolver will smoke quite a bit more using this same powder recipe. It might make more muzzle flash, too. Was this a compressed load?

No, since cornmeal doesn’t burn I don’t think that qualifies.

Next I want to design a tool that goes inside a 44 wcf casing and creates the balloon head case like the original casing was designed. It’ll be a lathe tool and will cut the desired shape. Since you used a "Big Lube" (Mav Dutchman) bullet and SPG, fouling "should not" be a big deal anyway. That was the whole point of why I had the original PRS bullet made (the 45 Colt version upon which the other sizes are based). The idea was to get a bullet, when lubed with a good black powder lube, that would not foul out (lose accuracy) in a two day CASS match when not cleaned at all. That was using GOEX or even Elephant. It will foul the barrel, but not enough to "foul up your accuracy". Have you found different? My only 44/40 is a Winchester '92 DeLux and , gulp, I have to admit that I use Unique in it with the Mav bullet powder coated. I set my charge to yield just at 1,400fps which is safe in the '92. The powder coating prevents leading with my casting alloy. Did you find some leading with your duplex at that speed? PRS

Sorry if this is slightly off topic . I was looking at formulas for rocket candy, and they speak of the use of red iron oxide as a catalyst to speed up burning. The Haber Bosch process also uses iron oxide to split nitrogen pairs. Has anyone tried to use iron oxide to accelerate the burn rate of black powder? The following was copied from a rocket candy forum. There are many different approaches to making rcandy. The basic formula is potassium nitrate and sugar in a 65:35 ratio. To this you can optionally add 1 to 5% rust (red iron oxide, Fe2O3) Caution: These are not the same, rust is more correctly refered to as hydrated ferric oxide. Hydrated ferric oxide will no catalyze the propellant properly, use true Iron(III) oxide or ferric oxide (Fe2O3) to properly catalyze the fuel. to act as a catalyst. The potassium nitrate (KNO3) can be easily obtained from your local Home Depot in the form of Grants Stump Remover (other stump removers work as well, just read the bottle and look for potassium nitrate). This form of KNO3 is prilled and must be ground to a fine powder to be used. Not if dissolved first which The Haber Bosch process is described in Wikapedia with a section on catalysts.

@@Everythingblackpowder Thanks. I use Unique because I have a lot of it so I think I'll try tweaking the load just a bit. Maybe 1 or 2 grains unique for 30 grains of pyrodex. Then I can switch to actual BP once I give making my own a try.

Have you experimented with faster burning smokeless powders? why reloader 7? I tried researching this topic and I see people referencing Unique, and bullseye. I have CFE pistol and would like to use that potentially. I'm wanting loads that can hit 1400 fps in a 20" 1873 lever action safely. Do you have issues with leading with the faster velocities and pure lead bullets? Thanks

I own a uberti 1866 yellow boy 44/40 new unfired interested on your views regarding duplex loads for this gun. Is it feasible when considering the brass action. Could a load be developed that is stronger than factory Cowboy action Also like the idea of less fouling

@@NormanKrogstad-y5i I have a uberti 1866 in 45 Colt that is shoot duplex loads in and it performs great. I do t see why a 44/40 model would be any different.

Given your videos on “upside down” duplex loads, any reason why you didn’t do that here given the higher velocities with that in your 303 experiments?

**help!** I have a bit of a long story, but to shorten it, I have a friend who got a extremely abused pre 1899 12 gauge double barrel. Took a bore reader and it reads .835....so he ended up with an 8 gauge. The top of the barrels are stamped "cast steel" I was hoping you might possibly have an idea pertaining to load data?

Jake, are you not aware ..... as a social media, black powder influencer, it is not necessary to be an excellent shot. What's important is to be good looking, entertaining and maybe unbutton two more top buttons on the shirt 😳 PS ... nice smoke ring.
