44 mag uses less gun powder to reload and the types of gun powder used are cheaper and there's more different selections of powders than the powders used for 30-30. Non expanding homemade lead bullets are much more effective in 44 mag than 30-30 and because 44 mag is a straight walled caliber there's no need to trim the brass.

agreed that the 44 is easier and cheaper to reload. plus with full power loads you give up very little if anything in power to the 3030. out to 75-100y they are virtually the same. obviously the 3030 will take you much further out without having do dramatically adjustjng elevation. but you do get 10+1 with the 44. in the end it might just be personal preference. but i went with the 44, mainly because i had a rught srh already

Great video, thanks. I have a 336BL carbine in 30-30 and love it, it is still a lot heavier than a 44 mag, but the 18 1/2 inch barrel makes it really handy and it points really nicely. The advantage of the 30-30 over the 44 is that if you are hunting meat with a soft point, it does virtually no damage to the meat apart from the hole. I reckon it is seriously under rated in Australia for that application. Between that and the extra 50 yards it is my favourite round for the sort of mixed game state forest hunting that I do, but can see your point on the utility of the 44 for pig control. Clearly I need one of each :-)

Not because the guns won’t do it, but that’s about where I limit myself as I’m getting older these days. 😊

I've had my winchester a94 in 44mag for 2 years (props to mainstreet guns, Lilburn, GA). I've had other rifles that shoot handgun rounds, my ruger american chambered for .357mag was easy to shoot accurately with little kick, but the energy of the 44mag round out of a 16" barrel at sub-100yds would def make Harry Callahan's day, it strikes with extreme prejudice. One drawback, this gun is probably the LOUDEST i've owned, my earplug slipped halfway loose once before I fired and my ear was ringing for two days!

Lower velocity and greater weight projectiles are affected less by the brush. They tend to just keep on trucking. Although, 30-06 simply cannot be stopped. No matter what you're shooting through. But then again, 30-06 isnt in the same league as 44 mag and 30-30. So its unfair to compare. Personally, for within 80m the 44 mag is the better option. I'd rather run a 357 over a 44 purely for cost of ammo. 357 is as effective at 50m as 44 magnum is at 80m. So just again, depends on your hunting distances. Good vid mate. Love em.

I find my Winchester 94 a good middle ground, I've used a rossi 92 in 44 mag, fully loaded they both feel around the same weight. The benefits of the Winchester over the marlin in 30-30 is weight and the extra round you can fit in the tube making for a total of 8. I just run a red dot on my 94 which is perfect for scrup hunting. I've found the action smother on my 94 out of the box compared to entry level 336, mind you my Winchester was made in the late 70s. I guess a benefit of the 336 is the side eject as apposed to the top eject of the 94. I mainly run ppu 150gn soft points which I usually get for less than $20 a box.
@HuntShootOffroad5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I saw the PPU at the LGS for $25. The Winchesters are definitely smoother/faster that's why all the cowboy action shooters use them. They are a nice light gun! Top eject eject doors limit some optic choices. I'm all about that magazine capacity!

I own both of these 1894 and 336 rifles. I also have the 1895. I prefer to use the 1894 in 44 magnum most of the time. Light and handy with plenty of punch. My 1894 loves 240 grain RNSP Winchester white box ammo. I don't know why but it loves them. Shoots quarter size 3 shot groups at 50 yds from a rest with iron sights. I rarely put more than 3 rounds in any of my lever rifles. I think the most I have shot at an animal is twice so why lug around the extra weight. I'll keep a few more in my pocket, but never needed them on a hunt. I like a large heavy bullet for hunting. Small bullets at high velocity tend to do massive damage and destroy meat. I'm in central Florida so lots of thick brush. Love my big bores and 50 yards is a long shot for me. TY.... MH

No you cannot hunt any native Australian animals. Some farms get "mitigation certificates" to cull kangaroos. But part of the rules are you must leave them where they lay, unless they are on a road. They are extremely easy to shot at night under spotlight, which is legal (under certificate). A 223 bolt action would be the firearm of choice (semi autos are pretty much illegal here). Man, 45-70 is a very slow and heavy bullet which means it make a small hole that goes through the animal with almost no hydraulic shock. The shock is what causes tissue damage and bleeding. If you want a deep hole with not much tissue damage, then you can go for a shotgun slug, it will do amazing job :D My opinion about 45-70 is it's an expensive gun and ammo. I would go for .460 or even a 44 mag, but not for a 45-70, I don't think it's worth it :)
@exothermal.sprocket4 жыл бұрын
@@125varma There's a lot more to the cause of death in big animals than simply hydraulic shock. There's a very large variety of projectiles in .458" that accomplish a wide variety of uses. Velocity in 45-70 doesn't have to be very dramatic because the momentum the bullet carries is devastating. Doesn't have to be moving fast but will plow on through a car. Similarly with a thick, tough animal, you need deep penetration and that requires bullet momentum. Lightweight lightning fast bullets terminate quickly. Heavy slugs moving slow are like a ship that rips up an entire harbor before coming to a stop. Making a transverse lung shot on a big animal, you want to punch a large hole entirely through to incapacitate the animal being able to continue filling the lungs. That's the most ethical and guaranteed placement. The limitation on 45-70 is tube capacity, compared to 357, 44, 45, etc. But you can buy the Marlin Model 1895CB and it holds 9 (long and heavy however).

There has been some interesting research on wound channels actually. Pistols just don't do enough collateral damage. But the 44 mag doesn't really come under pistol calibre when reloaded. I definitely agree with you! Hence why it's my #1 choice!
@exothermal.sprocket4 жыл бұрын
@@HuntShootOffroad It's the angle at which someone wishes to approach application. 30-30 and 44mag are very similar in calculated energy. Very different in starting weight and velocity. I am not so concerned about having the flattest shooting trajectory because adjusting for bullet drop is a very simple process and shouldn't be a problem for most people. Gravitational pull is exactly the same on every projectile, so minimizing flight time provides for minimal drop and minimal rainbow trajectory. That's all well and good. But what happens upon impact is what I find most interesting. Usually a heavier and more blunt projectile carries greater momentum requiring less velocity. 44mag, 45Colt+p, 454 Casull, 475/480, 500, 45-70, etc all great examples of blunt, slow, big momentum stuff. The side benefit of pistol cartridges is the multi-use aspect. There are pistols in .30-30 and 45-70 but they are comically large and far less practical. But standard pistol cartridges down to 357mag really get a lot of help in carbine length barrels. So versatile.

@@exothermal.sprocket momentum =mass x velocity. Can't have one without the other. But I agree, a 150gn needs to travel twice as fast as a 300gn to have the same momentum. When we talk energy though, velocity is king, as it's value is squared in the energy equation. Of course, then there is sectional density/penetration angle too.
@exothermal.sprocket3 жыл бұрын
@@theowenssailingdiary5239 Velocity is king? I didn't think it was a struggle of kingdoms in physics. High velocity lightweight bullets can terminate their energy very quickly upon impact, making violent and shallow wounds. Low velocity heavy bullets can plow on through meat, organs, bones, hide, etc. and keep going. It's an important balance of factors to consider when choosing a handgun cartridge and particular load in that caliber. I have used the illustration of comparing a lightweight speedboat vs. a slow heavy barge. The speedboat will explode on impact and the barge will rip up the entire harbor before stopping. Of course physics doesn't care one iota about people trying to separate aspects of momentum, energy, velocity, trajectory. The earth doesn't care anything about the news media trying to say everything needs to be at an average global temperature of X. It's silly games we all play to quantify stuff.

So... Using the 160-grain nylon-tipped Leverevolution, there's no comparison. 44 mag just can't keep up.

I'm sorry but I was over halfway into the video and still nothing that I would consider that would evaluate the difference in the 44 and the 30-30 to say which rifle actually is the strongest.

Magazine capacity, cost of ammo, range, deflection, none of that matters? Or did you want science and targets?

Maybe watch the rest. Give the guy a break lol.

30-30 has as much power at 100 yds. as .44 mag has at its muzzle.

I think you mean velocity.

@@HuntShootOffroad Nope, foot pounds of power. 30-30 is all over the 44 mag.

@@anton1949 3030 @150gr 2150fps = 1540ft.lbs at the muzzle. 44mag @240gr 1700fps = 1540ft.lbs at the muzzle. Based on figures from Nosler #8. So the same "Power" at the muzzle. Please check your maths and come back.

Good points on both rifles and im happy the 45-70 made an appearence! I just picked up the 1895 SBL today and some 325gr FTX boolits, still surprised how big the bore is on these firearms. I have a Marlin 30-30 limited edition and its very nice on deer, never shot a 44mag from a lever gun, perhaps thats where i will venture next! Keep up the good work blingbling.

I just couldn't get the big loop it just didn't feel right and the stainless was just way to heavy. Have you checked out the midwest MLOK foregrip? Nice piece of kit!

@@HuntShootOffroad fair enough, im loving the big loop it feels really nice to cycle it also feels nice and light being 18.5". Yeah i saw that rail but i think the fit and feel of the factory foreend is very comfy.
