I am probably old enough to be your grandmother and an African-American but I can remember in the 80s ladies swooning over John Lone, Russell and Micheal Wong. Joan Chen was considered one of the most beautiful women in the world. Janes Shigeta was gorgeous, however, few writers, especially on the West Side of the planet seemed to have faith in these actors to lead films. There is also Will Yun Lee who stole hearts in the witchblade series and in later movies. I imagine much depended on what films you followed -and I personally was not into Sleepless in Seattle.

For people that ask, "What's so important about being famous?" Doesn't really understand when your group is being under-represented in the media and that hurts the entire minority group. Because when you have lack of representation, you have a lack of empathy for that group, and that leads to more hate crimes. Let me quote Yoda from Star Wars for a moment: "Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering." And having more representation in the media helps push that fear away.

For me, I mostly know Asian actors who aren’t from the USA past and present. Toshiro Mifune, Rinko Kikuchi, Ken Watanabe, Hiroyuki Sanada, Song Kang-Ho, Donnie Yen and Lee Byung-hun. These are actors who may not be Americans but played a huge role in America due to their movies.

I had to heavily research this because AAPI month was always not really celebrated to it's full potential where I'm at. When I was growing up in the 80s and 90s the famous Asian Americans I knew were Ernie Reyes Jr., Ke Huy Quan, Dante Basco, and Pat Morita. I did idolize legends who were not American but did have a heavy impact in America such as Lea Salonga and Bruce Lee. Current famous Asian Americans are Sung Kang and Awkwafina. There are other famous Asians but many are from Canada. Other famous people who are not known to be Asian American but are include Olivia Rodrigo, Bruno Mars, Hailee Steinfeld, Vanessa Hudgens, and Lou Diamond Phillips.

I think the phenomenon of recognizing a face but not the name makes sense. Usually people will need to be a vehement fan of a celebrity to be incentivized to look them up and if most Asian actors are only occupying minor supporting roles, then they may be more apathetic compared to learning about the name of a protagonist that they may find physically attractive.
@darrylt8502

64% is pretty good, imo. Ke Huy Quan is an American celebrity but who can remember his name when it is difficult to pronounce. That's one of the challenges of being Asian American with a homeland name. Jeremy Lin can be easily recognizable if he was able to maintain his top notch performance into his mid 30s. We just need consistency. In cinema, like Jackie Chan (not American), it's his unique performance that people recognize and want more of. His name is also easily notable like a brand of a product. I'm enjoying the reboot of Quantum Leap and hope to see more of the lead actor in future movies. It's a shame that he appeared in Top Gun: Mavorick for only a few scenes.

There are certain periods in Hollywood when they have a go-to asian actor/actress, and thats usually who the general audience might remember. Lucy Lui was the go to asian actress at the time. Lately its been Michelle Yeoh and Akwafina. For male actors lately its been Donnie Yen and Hiroyuki Sanada. You cant really expect everyone to remember the new faces

Surprised people couldn't name at least one SEA performer, you'd think Dante Basco would be a freebie with his roles in Hook and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Also Manny Jacinto, but let's be honest, how many people who watched The Good Place saw Filipino right off the bat; knowing how people are, they'd be like Hank Hill, "are ya Chinese or Japanese?" And that's just Filipino, you got other ones like Tony Jaa, Kelly Marie Tran, Jeeja Yanin, Reggie Lee, and Hong Chau. That's only a few off the top of my head, I'm sure there's a lot of others that people aren't aware are SEA (or half), like Bruno Mars, Lou Diamond Philips, Vanessa Hudgens, and surprisingly Mark-Paul Gosselaar.

If it weren't for superhero movies Tom Holland would not have gotten that huge, nobody would even know who Simu Liu is. Hollywood in general cant produce young stars anymore on the levels of fame that Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li got.

I'm Chinese Canadian, and at one of my previous job, me being the only Asian and visible minority working there, I had a realistic perspective of how they see Asian in cinema. I said there's this new movie (Crazy Rich Asians) coming out. The response was, is it martial arts, I said no, it's a comedy, and the response is they're not interested. If it's drama or comedy, they just can't wrap their head around this. Frankly, Everything Everywhere All At Once would haven't gotten as far as it did, if there weren't martial arts, imo.

@@goyam2981 It's putting on a very specific expectation just because it's an all-Asian cast. We all watch Caucasian people in movies, so what should be the difference, it's not like a choice considering white folks are in most films in the Anglo-speaking world. I literally saw a comment in another thread about Netflix Beef from some anonymous person saying they weren't that thrilled to watch so many Asians. This series is so darn good, yet, they'll pass it up based on race. I haven't passed up a series that seems interesting if it's a Black cast.

@Rob I've flown Turkish Airlines 3 times and I never care to watch their scripted shows. I've watched some documentaries about Turkish food in different cities though, and would love to stop over in Istanbul sometime. You see, who would like to watch shows from what culture just depends on their interest and liking and it shouldn't be an obligation. White people didn't ask people of other races to watch their shows. We watch their shows on our own accord. Some people may like martial arts so they are open to Asian martial arts movies. If it's rom com or drama they may not be interested. That's okay. Myself black comedy series I watch. But black drama series about slaves I'm tired of. Hispanic shows I watched Jane the Virgin a little bit but couldn't get into it. But I would love to visit Mexico and Latin American countries someday. Hope you see my point.
