After waiting over 2 years to get the new mid-engine corvette finally this month; there is something that I find fascinating and nostalgic about the big block mopar engine . That is why I am AGAIN watching this series! I had a 1970 Dodge Super Bee that i sold in 1976 with a pistol grip Hurst 4 speed and I miss it so much. Nice videos!.

I use silicone mold release spray on my wires during assembly. It dries fast and works much better than other oils, just spray the wire end and boots then slip them together easily. Power guess: 455 hp & 475 tq.

Try using baby powder as a wire/boot lubricant, a liberal dusting on the wire jacket and in the boot works exceptionally well, is less messy than WD-40/silicone oil/grease, is non-conductive, resists carbon tracking and is rubber/insulation friendly.

What are your thoughts on routing the spark plug wires underneath the headers and routing them to the distributor? I had never considered that until I purchased an 82' chevy pickup last year with 10,000 miles on it. its appeared unmolested and i was curious if that was how the trucks came from the factory. i have began running wires on my builds that way and have had great success with wires nor being damaged or effected by heat from the headers. I do however put the wires in a heat shield. I believe the additional wire length has not effected performance.

When priming the oil pump you mentioned turning the cam to get the oil passes to line up, priming both rocker assemblies. In this video when installing the distributor you say your engine is still at TDC. Did you go back to TDC after priming? how did you do it with the heads on? or did you not turn the cam to prime the rocker assemblies?

Yes, after priming the oil pump I turn the engine to #1 at TDC compression stroke.

Hello Pete, I did a similar 440 build (stroked to 512, 10.5 compression, roller lifters, 584 hp on engine dyno after break-in). Saw your video about viscosity which was very informative but was wondering what type of oil you would recommend after break in? I drive my car on the street probably less than a 700 miles and at the drag strip about 20-30 runs a season. Thanks
@PetesGarage5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michael, there is no need to change viscosity after break-in. Just use the same oil. I run 20W50
@Dodgechallengersixpack4 жыл бұрын
I use driven racing HR6 it has rust inhibitors and zddp. Its full synthetic. Main thing is to heat oil up to prevent/boil off condensation from forming. This breeds issues and turns oil acidic. Then oil breaks down from acidity.
@alanr50064 жыл бұрын
Apologies if this has been asked before, but is this a CVF bracket/pulley set? I'm putting a set on a 400 motor in a 74 charger. With power steering and air. I didn't hear any mention of a thread sealer on the bolts. Is this needed? I'm about to attach the 440 source housing to the block and looking forward to seeing it all come together. Thanks Pete.
@PetesGarage4 жыл бұрын
It's a billet bracket from 440 source. Thread sealant is only required on bolts going onto coolant cavities like on the water pump

HI Pete! what is your reason for dyno testing a rebuild engine. I know its a must do thing I just to know your opinion. Thanks

I do it for three reasons 1) To make sure the carb is jetted exactly right and the engine is not lean or rich. 2) There are no leaks anywhere 3) I know exactly power it's putting out so I can choose the rest of the drivetrain components

My guess is 593hp, those heads are moving 310cfm at 0.500:). Great videos Pete, been watching for years...finally clicked subscribe. I was wondering if you're using mufflers on the dyno, or running with an open exhaust. Seems like it should peak around 5500-6000rpm. My gut is telling me that it should make over 600 easy, but with the water pump, alternator, air cleaner and carb with a choke, it might struggle to get there, but I hope I am wrong;). Can't wait to see how much torque it puts down on the dyno.

Hi Pete, form Sydney Australia. Love the 440 build, I’m just about to build a 440 stroker myself. Have just bought the trickflow 240’s and manifold, looking to make 650hp/tq, any tips on a combo to achieve that? I’m keen to know what pulley setup that is, I already have the same alternator and bracket, but those pulleys took mint! Where does one get them from? Cheers, Mick
@PetesGarage6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mick...650 is a big number that will require a big cam and high compression. This one has 531 HP and it is really pushing the streetability factor. The pulleys are just serpentine pulleys, it was not a system. I got those from 440source.com

Pete's Garage I am aiming for around 12:1 comp, my brother has a 360/408 stroker with just a tad over 12:1 comp on pump fuel, with absolutely no issues drag racing and street duties. Im looking at a 500+ stroker and a cam in the 260 duration range. As I am building the engine myself, with all the research I have done and books I have bought, I cant seem to find information on bearing clearances (main and rod) and ring gaps etc. i can find plenty of info on engine combos (size, comp, cams, heads etc) and I can see what kind of power they make or times they run, but I can’t seem to find the finer details
