The long awaited return of LNER A4 Class 4498/60007 Sir Nigel Gresley is finally here as Gresley takes her first tentative movements on the Severn Valley Railway after a lengthy overhaul. The locomotive is due to her run in her black wartime guise throughout testing and on the Severn Valley Railway's Spring Steam Gala at the end of April. The A4 is seen arriving at Highley where we also get some closeup shots which showcase the fantastic design build of the A4 locomotive. There is also two brief passing shots on Eardington Bank, where her wheels are finally seen in motion for the first time since late 2015.
I hope you enjoy the return to steam of 'Sir Nigel Gresley'

As a kid in the 70s I was fascinated by steam engines, and had a particular fondness for the streamlined locos. I read all the books I could from the library. Now I have a memory of something I saw in a book showing Sir Nigel Gresley being destroyed in WW2 when an engine shed was bombed. There was a photograph of the wreckage. If I remember correctly, this book stated that the engine was beyond repair and that "the seagull" was renamed Sir Nigel Gresley. I could have mis remembered, this book may not have been correct... I don't remember which book this was. Anyone out there know anything about this or read the same book?
@brianwhittington5086
@brianwhittington5086 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about which book it's in, but the only A4 Streamline Gresley Pacific I've read something similar about, happened at York. During the so called Baedeker Raids, so named because the Luftwaffe targeted notable UK tourist and historic places, highlighted in a guide book of that name. York Station and the North Shed were hit when York was bombed. At least two different types of engines were damaged beyond repair, by a direct hit from a German bomb on the night of April 28/29th 1942. A direct hit through the North Shed roof, landed between two engines, but they shielded many others from major damage. One of the two engines was A4 Pacific, No 4469 Sir Ralph Wedgwood. It was later taken to it's Doncaster Works birthplace for assessment to repair it. Only it's tender was salvageable, the engine was beyond repair and was scrapped. As far as I'm aware, but could be wrong, no other A4 got renamed/ renumbered as No 4469 Sir Ralph Wedgewood to replace the destroyed original.

@@EwanSmith05 Isn't much of a bother to me either. And BR Blue suits the A4's much better than BR Green. It was recently revealed by the owners that the Gresley did a 117mph run in the 1950’s, 5mph faster than its well known post-war speed record. The 117mph run was kept secret because the crew/inspectors would have got into trouble. So Gresley has beaten the LMS Coronation speed record of 114mph.

I find it interesting that the A4's could on a good day with a good crew do 120 mph plus.A modern GWR or Pendilno can still only match that kind of speed.And the timescale is 80 odd years?.Hitachi can run must faster but our tracks and their curves cant handle that.The french and Japan had their "HS2" rails in place decades ago.The "Bullet" locos were good for 160mph while in the uk we were still mixing steam and diesel electric workings for passenger and freight on the same rails.

How well I remember the cry of “STREAK❗️❗️” on Doncaster station cattle dock 70 years ago. I used to be taken by my older brother trainspotting on the way home from School which was very close by. The Streak’s whistle was very distinctive and made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Happy days😁.

Yay! Sir Nigel Gresley is back in action! I actually went on him at North York Moors, when I was 8.
