I have a Henry X 45-70 with a Rugged Obsidian 45 silencer. Everyone gets a kick out of it (literally) when I break it out on the range. It's so unique, being a classic lever gun with modern furniture, fiber optic sights, and a threaded barrel. Subsonics are so fun, it's about as loud (and fast) as throwing a hammer down range slamming a steel plate. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I too have one Italian Sharps and two Shiloh Sharps.....a Hartford model and a Montana Rough Rider, all in 4570. I run only hand cast lead bullets and black powder in those guns. In the Marlin Guide gun (magna ported) I run mostly 300 grain HP and 405 grain Remington government bullets. I have taken deer with both style rifles. I have even taken a whitetail with my Hartford Shiloh Sharps with a custom made mold, hand cast, paper patched 500 grain FN bullet.

One of my favourite calibers. Been loading and shooting for almost 40 years. I have a few different rifles in this caliber, enjoy BPC but use my level gun with smokeless for bear defence on the ranch, it’s a close quarter, heavy brush, no messing around caliber. Yup like my old 45-70. It's one of the Marlin 1895 straight grip stock. I have a Leupold 3x on it. The 350 Hornady is one of my favorite bullets to load and shoot from mine also loaded with IMR 3031. Great job Guy!

I'm a little late to the game, just discovered this video. I have a Henry 45-70 X model. As much as I wanted to stick with the factory open sights, the front very bright fiber optic bead is so large that it covers up a pie plate at 100 yards down range. I opted to put on a Vortex 1.5x4 red dot scope with very tall mounts that give me an open sight "window" below the scope. Last week I took a whitetail at 30 yards while it was walking briskly away from me at a 4 o' clock position by looking under the scope because I was about 2 seconds away from losing it into a thicket. Dropped the deer on the spot. I was using hand loaded Hornady 250 grain monoflex solid copper bullets loaded to shoot at 2250 fps. Loading the Hornady pointed rubber tipped projectiles (Monoflex and FTX) requires that you trim the case length down substantially before seating the bullet. All of my Hornady stamped brass is trimmed to that shorter length to avoid confusion during the reloading process. Standard roll crimp and factory crimp dies will not complete the job because of the shortened brass. Unless you know a machinist who can modify a standard die to perform the crimp on this shortened cartridge, the work around I found is to stand the seated bullet atop the shell holder and carefully ease it upwards into a factory crimp die using a lot of finesse and "feel" as not to crush and ripple the casing. As you lower the press you discover the cartridge is stuck in the die. No problem. You simply pop it out with a thin bladed flat screwdriver stuck between the cartridge rim and the bottom of the die. This process wouldn't make a good KZbin video because you'd likely scare the audience with the work around tactics. As far as cast bullets go, the performance cast 405 grain gas checked bullets are great standard fare for this rifle. Also the powder coated 405 grain cast bullets from SNS are excellent performers downrange. Thanks for this video, I found it very interesting.

Have shot 45-70 for many years and still grin when shooting. Ruger #1, Marlin 26"cowboy and Marlin guide gun. I tend to use 300 gr. hp in the Marlins for most uses but do load 350gr. for larger game (or steel) and 350 rn in the Ruger #1 and push the limits and am confident it would stop anything. My load for the Marlins is 48.5 IMR 4198 for a 300gr, a very accurate load with lower pressures. You need to trim after 2 or 3 firings and if you use the Hornady flex tip factory loads for your initial brass supply keep them separate as they are much shorter then standard brass. Cast bullets are also accurate and fun to shoot.

Enjoyed the video. I have a Marlin 1895 stainless with the big loop, which is great for hunting with gloves. I installed a set of ghost ring sights since hunting in thick brush in my area rarely involves a shot beyond 100 - 150 yards and many within 50 yards. I love the feeling of nostalgia while hunting with this rifle, and the six round capacity of 45-70 combined with quick target acquisition of the ghost ring sight provides confidence hunting deer in bear country. So far I have not reloaded the 45-70 but this video has me itching to try it. I've been hunting with the Hornady LEVERevolution 325 grain FTX and saved all my brass. I may try the round nose but it's good to know Hornady also sells the FTX bullets for reloading.

Been shooting 45-70 for years out of an original 1884 Trapdoor Springfield. Started reloading for it about two years ago using basic Trapdoor load data with cast lead bullets and a few different types of smokeless powder. Haven’t gotten around to black powder yet. Last year bought a Miroku Browning 1886 lever action and a Pedersoli Remington Rolling Block, both in 45-70. Working up loads for accuracy.

Great rundown on loading for an old favourite. I’ve had good luck with magnum primers lighting up H4198 behind a cast 350g for 1200f/s target loads. Actually gave a little less velocity over the standard long rifle primer, but tightened group and lower SD to boot. Unexpected and happily received. 1895 SBL topped with the Leupold VX.R 2-7 and Firedot reticle. I have been an avid reloader for 40 years but have never reloaded for the 45-70. I have shot some of the Federal ammo when I first got it but since then have been shooting the Hornady Leverevolution 325 gr FTX. A lot of fun to shoot and and look forward to taking game with it.

I am a little late in watching this video but it was very helpful. I am preparing my Henry Repeating Arms Model H010CC in 45-70 for a second Roosevelt Elk hunt in the Olympic State Park in Washington State this November. Last time I did this hunt I used my McMillan 375 H&H bolt action rifle. With some experience under my belt in this area I realize I need a lighter and shorter rifle to make the stocking a little easier. By far the most difficult and rewarding hunt I have ever done. An absolutely amazing area to hunt. Thanks for the video.

I have found when loading that if one pushes the loads ammo into the magazine, leave the rim end sticking out of the tube on top of the gate helps next load enter easily. Gotta love the 45-70, as you know GUY!. 525 grn PILE DRIVERS from Bear tooth Bullets is my go to when in bear country. My 45-70 is a Marlin 1895 BL, blue with brown laminated stock. It has skinner peep and a custom blade front sight I made that resembles the Ruger single action front blade.

I have a Marlin 336 in .35 REM which I use the hornady leverevolution 200gr. FTX. I purchased this rifle for a Whitetail season in Pennsylvania several years ago. I was successful taking a resectable 6 pt buck on opening day with open sights. I was the talk of the camp following my success, as I was the only hunter that year using a traditional non-scoped lever action. I really enjoy owning this original Marlin firearm, as they of course are manufactured currently by Ruger and prior to that Remington. Fun rifle gentlemen.

After a couple of decades loading the .45-70 I've realized that for most shooters and hunters, the top-end loads are not necessary and can in fact be detrimental to the shooter. Cast bullets are what the .45-70 thrives on. For deer I like the Lyman #457122 mold which drops a 330 grain HP. Driven to 1600 fps with RL7 or IMR4198 it's well inside Trapdoor pressure limits and will most certainly give Bambi a very bad day. For bigger game a 400 grain LBT style flat nose @ 1500 fps is again inside Trapdoor pressure limits, and there isn't anything in North America that will survive a well placed hit with that load. Neither load will beat you up, something I appreciate more and more as I age.

I concur that lead is less wear on the gun particularly the barrel and I don't want to wear out my 1886 Winchester, so I want be shooting the brass bullets that I loaded in 45-90 on a regular basis.

any more, all I shoot is lead. 1625 fps with a 425 gr Beartooth, or even the 525 gr Beartooth, is a devastating load. they beat me up on the bench, but off sticks or free hand, they're kittens. a 350 gr bullet at 1900 fps is only a whopping 2" flatter at 200 yards than a 425 or 525 exiting the muzzle at 1600 fps. and at 200 yards, the 525 gr BTB is still over 2K ft-lbs of energy, and the 350 is down to about 1200 ft lbs at 200 yards. there is no comparison in potential lethality between "fast" 45-70 300 or 350 gr vs slower 405 gr or heavier. the heavy bullets, even at 300-500 fps slower, are still the kings.

I’m definitely going to deer hunt with the 457122 this year. I’m also using IMR4198, but am actually looking at 1400-1500 fps. Here in east Ohio, it’s highly unlikely to have a shot over 75 yards, so I’m sure this’ll be more than enough juice.

I reload for my 1895 for mv 1600 - 1800fps. It s my fun rifle and many other fire it as well, so for their comfort I use lower pressure. Plus I shoot 450gn round nose lead pills and also load up with black powder on occasion for the wow factor. Also own its big brother, 45-120 Sharps, another beaut. I load for an 1895 Guide Gun and an 1895 Cowboy. A 405gr hardcast lead bullet at 1600 fps will punch a clean hole through a large deer or pig, without the punishing recoil. IMR 4198 and Reloder 7 are both excellent powders for my purposes. That 56gr 3031 load had to rattle your teeth a fair amount.

I shot a decent buck (about 170#, nice body size for south Louisiana) closing day of rifle season a couple weekends ago with a 425 gr Beartooth Bullets Piledriver, Junior. There was almost no blood-shot meat, and I was literally able to eat right up to the hole. MV on that load is 1625. I like the results I get with both RL7 and Ramshot XTerminator. I get near identical velocities from identical powder loads, and the same accuracy, which is to say very good.

It was a serious learning experience loading that cartridge for the first time...especially in the differences between mixed Starline & Hornady brass case lengths and the COAL of the round for a lever action vs. single shot

Howdy, Guys! Great video, and lots of good information! I shoot a Marlin 1895 SS, and usually use the old Sierra 300 grain JHP rounds in it. I use Remington brass, and WWLR primers. For powder, I like the IMR 3031, and IMR 4198. My most accurate load (in MY rifle) has always been 43 grain of IMR 4198, and that Sierra 300 grain JHP. Out of my rifle it averages 1,882 FPS, with 2360 FPE. I usually mount a 4X scope on my Marlin, and though the drop at 300 yards is huge, I can fairly easily drop those slugs into a one gallon water-filled milk jug at that range. The bullet expansion, even at that range, is awesome! (Disclaimer: This load has been proven safe in MY rifle, and with the components I have listed. I have NO idea how they will work for you, in YOUR rifle.) As an aside, I process my cases exactly as shown in this video, though I do trim my cases before first firing them, and check them, often, to see if they need further trimming. Very nice. I knew this was going to be a great video when i saw Guy in the thumbnail and 45-70 in the title. I love Marlins, but don't have any big bores. Been wanting a 45-70. I like the Henry Single Shot too. There seems to be dome powder overlap with 30-30 (3031 being the obvious example), so that is a good thing. I know i have 2 or 3 good powders already on hand, whenever i can start reloading. The 45-70 does not seem to need a max load to be effective; even Trapdoor level loads are useful. Something like the Buffalo Bore levergun load, 405 gr JFN at 1600-ish fps is probably great for most uses. They swear by the 45-70 in AK. As Guy mentioned, it is excellent for bear, moose, etc. Keep up the great content. Thanks

Thank you! Yes, the 45-70 is a terrifically capable hunting cartridge. I'd use it for any big game in North America, and you're absolutely right, maximum, heavy-recoiling loads are not necessary, that's a big ol' hunk of bullet moving downrange. :)

Ahhh. This was good for my soul. Nice video. 45-70 is mellow round to reload. 45 Long Colt is also a nice round to reload and shoot. (I like that I can use the same bullets as I use for 45 Automatic reloads). I have a Rossi M92 copy of the Winchester Model 1892 that can shoot smiley faces on my paper targets. Lever Actions really are fun shooters. Tip: Hornady flex tips bullets use cases that are shorter than standard 45-70. If you buy factory flex tip ammunition keep the brass separated from the standard full length cases. This saves on headaches when checking overall case length or possibly seating a bullet too deep.

The Hodgdon Reloading data shows the IMR3031 minimum charge of 56.5 grs. and a max charge of 60 grs, compressed. Data shows the minimum charge should produce MV of 2022 fps. This is specific to the Lever Action rifles of Marlin and Henry. I find Hornady brass will not work in the Lee dies for crimping. Remington and Winchester brass is the best unless you get new Starline brass. I find Federal brass to be rather less than durable. I reload a 300 gr. Combined Technologies/Nosler bullet that is coated in molybdenum. 53.7 grs. of IMR4198 (starting load) has a MV of 2400 fps and 3400 ft.lbs of ME. This puppy is a handful. Fun video. Thank you.

I had a problem also with the Hornady brass - I was loading BOTH Starline AND Hornady...didn't realize I was dealing with two different manufacturers and couldn't understand WHY some of the bullets fit snugly into some case mouths while they slid completely into the case on others...it took a while for the light to go on. THEN I separated the cases but never miked them to understand that the Hornady cases (my friend's ) were shorter (it took someone on another forum to clue me in) than the Starline cases (MY cases) and to top it off they wouldn't crimp in my Lee FCD...I called Lee and they told me to send the case and a bullet and they'd MAKE me a die - Cost me a whole 25 bux but by that time I wouldda paid a hell of a lot more...I finally separated my Starline from his Hornady brass, finished mine and waited for the the new, custom (short) FCD to arrive then finished his after I got the die...I still have a huge amount of his Hornady brass along with almost a full pound of AA5744 and a bunch of Hornady flex-tip bullets...both he and I forgot about them - he committed suicide last year and I only found this stuff this past April...he was a good guy and I miss him...Brownells has been out of Starline brass for a very long time - I've got it on my wish list and will get a notification when it becomes available...in the meantime I've got that Hornady stuff that I despise plus 100 405 grn cast lead bullets...

Owned an 1895 Guide Gun that had the cuts in the barrel to reduce recoil. That rifle was the only rifle I ever shot that hurt my ears. Barrel blast was significant. Shot one bear on the East side of Chinook Pass and a couple of deer and one elk around Bumping Lake with it. Traded it for a BLR in .308 and never looked back.

I had one of the factory ported 45-70 Marlin Guide Guns about 20 years ago. I liked the rifle a lot at the range when I was wearing ear protection. Then I shot a deer with it... Without ear protection. I think my ears rang for an hour! It's interesting that Marlin stopped porting them, I think I understand why. :)

I love the straightwall cases. I got a Marlin in .375 Win which I enjoy immensely. Great crossover for bear , or yeti "what if" while doing deer hunting. Think I recall using 4895 in the loads. Even with a 4x scope I still get bench rested 1.5 - 2 moa repeatedly. (At the full 100 yds.) I agree with the 200 yds and in best space assessment on big bore. For non lever carbine enthusiast info, what I call hunting, usually involves climbing and dropping over plus or minus 30-40 degree inclined hills. Clawing, climbing, swearing,and even falling occasionally. That's a great reason why lever carbines are not extinct. Not much to hate about it. (Except you'll never buy Remington ammo for it at Walmart....) Thank you both for the presentation.

I am shooting the 1895 Cowboy with 26 in barrel, I use AA1680 with Barnes 250 gr X bullet. It will print 3 touching at 100 yards. When I bought it new I had an issue with the barrel, sent it back to Marlin and they must have installed a premium barrel because it is a tack driver. I also asked them about buying a stock with a recoil pad. They installed the stock and forearm at no charge along with returning my original. Great Company for sure. I hope they do that for loyal customers with the new owners.

Which gun are you using and what's your speeds? I shot a 165 lb field dressed buck. And at 110yards lung shot it didn't exit with no blood trail. He only went 50 ish yards into the woods. But this was a factory 325 grain hornady load.

The marlin 1895 lever action.. its one of the only guns that's made for HOT reloads.. 🔥.. you will notice it has is own sections in reloading manuals like hornadys. I love octagon barrel original 45 70 gov. But the marlin has a special place in my heart

I shoot the same rifle and several others in .45-70. I have an H&R Single Shot that I load upto the Ruger #1 loads with great success also. My 1895 is the Guide Gun version, however with the 18" barrel and is really nice length for woods hunting. I use a 2-7x32 scope that has an etched reticle and doesn't break from the recoil and I upgraded the sights to the Tru-Glo fiberoptic sights designed for muzzle loaders (the metal ones, not the plastic). My goto load is a "book" mid range load of Reloader7 at 47 gr. with the Hornady 350 gr. RNFP or the flat point version Guy was referring to. This load is about equivalent to his 3031 load in power, but takes less powder (thankfully with current shortages I have a bunch stockpiled). I have also loaded the 300 gr. Gould bullet, RCBS 240 Gr. RNFP, Remington 405's, Lyman 270 gr. RNFP and Dardas 250 gr. RNFP cast bullets. I find the Reloader7 perfect, because you can load from Trap door levels at 31 gr. to Ruger #1 levels at 54 gr. My other lever guns are a .32 Winchester special that I shoot the Hornady FTX bullet out of. It's a model 94 Winchester that was my Great Grandma's "porch gun". She used to have it setting by her rocking chair and when a deer would run across the road, she'd shoot it and send Great Grandpa or my grandpa as a boy out to round it up. It has the old flip up sight and was purchased in 1926 prior to scopes really being popular. Longest shot on a deer for me was with that flip up sight at 600 yards. This was before we had range finders, so I guessed based on the number of steps it took me to get to him and was about 25 paces short on my estimation. The bullet went right between his legs and I'd missed the biggest buck of my life. He'd already seen me though, so you could say it was a hail mary. Finally, I have an 1873 Marlin 40-60. Fairly rare compared to the Winchesters and other Marlins, but it was the first rifle cartridge designed to be made with a small rifle primer. It was able to use semi-pointed bullets and was ahead of it's time as it could compete with the sharps for velocities and trajectory. Unfortunately, Winchesters were more popular and after the fire in their manufacturing facility in the 1880's, they stopped making it. The ammo was dropped from production in 1892, but luckily, when Winchester came out with the 40-65 (they won, because people thought it would hold 5 more grains of powder than the Marlin, but it held less and was just a marketing scheme). The 40-65 is only about 3/16" shorter than the Marlin 40-60, so most people that owned one, including my great-great uncle (whose gun it was originally), were able to still buy the ammo. I have his original loading tool, which has the bullet mold, crimper and you could do all your loading over a camp fire. He was employed by the rail companies out west as a shootist to help with the buffalo culling, which is sad in retrospect, but he was a great shot and regularly made 400 yard plus shots with this rifle. This rifle was a cast iron frame though, so no modern powder goes through it. I load it with BP only and shoot only lead 240 gr. RNFP cast bullets through it.

Bought my 1895 in 1989. Love it. Favorite bullet for it is the 250gr Barnes triple shock. With AA1680 the bullet comes out the barrel at 2600FPS, turns the gun into a true 300 yard rifle. With the 400 grain bullets I like H322. My favorite rifle/cartridge.

In my 1972-era Marlin 1895, Ramshot Exterminator and 405 gr Belt Mountain Punch Solids work really well. Not sure if that slug is still available but the combination produces single digit extreme spreads. I have played musical scopes with this gun. Leupold VXIII 1.5-5X, Leupold Ultralight 2.5X, and will try a red dot of some kind next. Thanks for the vid!

I'm shooting a Marlin Model 30 in 30-30. Loading BLC-2 with minimum charge from the Lee Manual with a 150gr soft point. It sure is fun to shoot, and nice to see the same setup available in 45-70.

I have a Marlin 1895M guide gun bought new in 2005. Bought one a few years earlier but didn’t like the ports. I shoot 350gr Hornady bullets with H4198. I haven’t shot it in years but starting to get motivated watching lever action videos. Wish I would have got the 45-70 now because there’s not as much reloading data compared to the 450 Marlin. I do like telling people what I have and seeing the confused look on there face as a lot people never heard of the round. It took a back seat to all my AR platforms but like I said I think it’s time to break it out again.

The 45/70 is my favorite cartridge. I've owned an 1873 Trapdoor Springfield, a Marlin 1895, the Henry 45/70 Bigboy, and arriving this Tuesday a JM Marlin 1895 Cowboy. With the 26in octagon barrel with Ballard rifling. Oh, and I have a Harrington Richardson Buffalo Classic in 45/70. Let me tell ya, there a hoot to shoot. Thanks for the video. I've been reloading 45-70 since the mid-1980's. I had a Ruger #1, never should have let it go. Currently have an original Trapdoor, and a Pedersoli Sharps. Both of them get only black powder loads. I also shoot the 50-70, which was the predecessor to the 45-70, and I consider it to be even more fun than the 45-70. It gets shot in an original Remington rolling block with a new barrel.

Good video, Informative. Mine is a Henry 45-70 with side loading gate. My standard target and plinking load is: LR primer, 30 grains of IMR-4198 with a 405 grain cast lead bullet. I usually use a Miester brand lead bullet. As I recall, the pressure is under 17,000 CUP with muzzle velocity of about 1370FPS...I do the same load with a Berry plated 350 grain bullet (rated for 1950FPS) and ballistics are about the same. Accurate! The recoil is tame enough for recoil sensitive shooters. Love this rifle

My favourite is my Marlin 1895 SBL in 45-70. 6+1 with only 35grains of Vhitavouri N130 and a hard cast 405 grain pill. Powder is topped with a card wad to keep it on the Magnum primer. Great gun to shoot, very accurate up to 50 metres and people just love shooting it if given the chance. Big holes, Big noise, Big smiles!!🙂

I have a Marlin 1895 CB 26” I load for with 400 gr Speer SP with RL7 and get great results, but my favorite lever action is my Cimarron 1876 28” in 50-95 Winchester . I found a great load with .510” 450gr Barnes SP and IMR 4198 I have some 1” 5 shot groups at 50 yards. She’s a blast to shoot with Swiss 2F or IMR 4198 and .513” 440 or 480gr lead too. One cool thing is she hold 13 plus one rounds and I’ve named her Bertha …

Some of my favorite loads for 45-70 are low recoil loads since it’s so much fun to shoot. Low recoil loads is great way to introduce new or young shooters to the sport. I enjoy using lead bullets 300 grain and up and I use Trail Boss powder. Trail Boss is one of my favorites for everything and I appreciate its safety. When I started reloading I started with 45-70. It’s a hobby that grew and grew and I enjoy it particularly in the winter months.

Gavin, I bought a modern production Winchester 1886 take down model with 26" octagonal barrel and pistol grip in 45-70 because I got into reloading and always wanted a lever gun. With the prices of guns all being relatively comparable I went with the big bore. My economical, shoulder friendly pet load is 14.5gr of trailboss in a starline case, WLR primer, and a berry's 350gr plated bullet on top. Even this light load thumps steel at 100yrds and is easy on the body. I do have some of the hornady ftx projectiles on hand but haven't gotten around to trying them. I for one would be very interested in you doing some testing compairing berrys bullets new version 350gr projectiles against the FTX and a standard 405gr lead cast projectile.

My only lever gun at this time is a stainless Rossi in 45 Colt. It sports a Vortex scout scope to help these old eyes. I bought it as a companion to my Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt. I've been reloading for 45 years now and only shoot 250 gr RNFP cast in both with a moderate dose of Unique powder. They're my 2 favorite guns.

My first introduction to the .45-70 was purchasing a Thompson encore many moons ago. I remember grabbing 2 boxes of ass kicking high haas stuff for it not knowing the difference. I recall the store owner asking if I wanted to get the barrel ported and said no not knowing what this cartridge is really all about. I figured the recoil couldn't be much worse that shooting my M82A1 or my DE in the .50 AE, boy was I wrong. After getting the pistol home to clean and lube I proceeded to the range. My father went with me as he was inquisitive what the cartridge was all about. The part I will always remember was the first time I shot it, holy hell, felt like I got my hand smashed with a sledgehammer. My father asked how the recoil was and I said not bad. I proceeded to shoot it again without flinching knowing what was going to happen when that hand cannon went boom. My father wanted to shoot it and handed him the cleared out pistol. I'll always remember his facial expression when he fired it and was quick to hand it back to me saying "he'll no, that thing beats the hell out of you." I didn't realize at the time they had specific hand gun loads for that caliber at the time that made it more manageable to enjoy/shoot. Fast forward to today I picked up a Ruger made Marlin 1895 Trapper and fell in love with that caliber all over again. I been reloading various cartridges from the .223 all the way up to the .50 BMG and recently started reloading for the .45-70 and fell in love with that caliber all over again. Long live the .45-70
