Gread video. For older eyes, I always take my dads Eschenbach Fadenzähler as magnifier and a lamp - or the cheap stereo microscope. Since i'm living in an partment, i have tool boxes like your project boxes that can be stored away or put in the vincinity of the desk. I also take these boxes visiting the local repair cafe or family and friends by car. No need to re-arrange things and remember were something currently is. Examples are an old suite case for various stuff (screw drives, pliers, cutters, IFixIt set, hefty screwdriver for bits) aided by boxes to solder, do mains installation, or etherner. Sure I mix tools and exendables, but that works out. Going on an ham radio field day is still a a nightmare.

@@jmileshc I’ve found LED torches with AA/AAAs work very poorly with rechargeables. The torches seem to expect the higher voltages of non-rechargeable chemistries. So the torch is dim, and the minimum voltage of the LEDs is reached while the batteries still have a decent amount of energy left in them. Maybe higher end torches don’t have this problem, but I imagine higher end torches aren’t using AAs either. I switched to a rechargeable torch, and I pretty much always have a USB power source available.

Another great Video with interesting toughs, thank you Andreas! Regarding the Scope: I really like my PicoScope 2000 USB Scope. Its Really compact, the software is easy to use and it offers a lot of options, +-20V is usually enough for MCU Projects and it dosnt req. any aditional power. But for me the seling point was that it can decode many Serial Protocolls out of the box like I2C, SPI and UART. The MSO Models even have up to 16 Digital inputs, wich is great for Logic debugging (but also quite expensive).

I can't say enough good things about The Checklist Manifesto. I bought it in 2010 while doing research into the Apollo Space program. Checklists were (and still are) vital to any space mission. So do yourself a favor and buy the book. Also, powerpoles are great. I use them for my ham radio stuff. And because I have an M2 Macbook, I no longer need 19 volts to power my laptop. I can use USB-C to either *power* the laptop (15w) or *charge* it (30w+). And the speed of the laptop is better than most Windows computers. So yeah, the fewer watts used the better

The '63 item' project kits you can get on Ali etc. of breadboard, stepper motor and driver, encoder, keyboard, displays etc. etc. are a nice compact package that fits in a spare corner of a suitcase and may have that elusive item you need. Regtarding the scope... I work in the field most of the time, and for a scope, despite trying a number of portable scopes, both tablet (eg Micsig) and hand held (eg Owon, Hantek), by far my go-to scope when baggage is limited is the Analog Discovery 2 which includes an LA, waveform generator, pattern generator, and variable bipolar power supply albeit limited to +/-5V and low current, but it is suitable for almost all the MCU projects I work on. The best feature is the Waveforms software. True, as a scope, it has limited bandwidth, but for the vast majority of things I encounter on the road it's easily sufficient. Plus, if you're on public transport, you can pre-wire the AD2 to your development board and put it in a small box so you can develop on the train or plane journey. Sometimes I really do need a "proper" scope. Then it's either a Rigol MSO1074Z-S (nice and small), Keysight MSOX3104T, or a Tek MDO4104C depending on the requirement, but all are carried in the manufacturers' purpose made protective padded carry cases. But the Analog Discovery 2 is always with me.
@AndreasSpiess
@AndreasSpiess Жыл бұрын
I agree, the Analog Discovery 2 is very versatile and small. After some commenters I added as a cheap alternative a cheap logic analyzer. It is no scope, but in many cases, can replace it (digital work). Bandwidth, BTW, often is not important if you are on the road.
@electrobob
@electrobob Жыл бұрын
I strongly recommend an Analog discovery, in different flavors. There is no box that can do more for you: at last 2 channel scope, 2 channel waveform generator, 16 channel logic analyzer, 16 channel waveform generator plus these instruments can be combined together. I have been using the original one for years now and it is ideal for microcontrollers/sensors etc.

For those who like the XT60 connectors, note that they have somewhat recently come out with a smaller XT30 version. These are much cheaper per unit, but way more compact and are generally more than adequate for electronics type projects except in very high-current applications. Especially when traveling, a bunch of homemade cables and adapters terminating in XT30 connectors take up a lot less space than XT60s, and I'm quite comfortable using them up to 20A or so continuous (they're officially rated to 30A, but I prefer to be conservative).

I'm not sure I agree. I have one since backing it on kickstarter and it makes an excellent bluetooth presenter remote but the rest of the functions are much better performed with much cheaper in many cases, dedicated hardware. On the learning front, the documentation for developing on it is severely lacking or at least was when I looked a few months ago.

I too still use leaded solder but only because I use up most of my grandpa's "consumables". He is still alive at the rightful age of 91 but he doesn't do much electronics anymore. Even the single roll of solder I have all likely last for my entire life. I don't solder that much.

I have used a cell phone backup battery for my kit & found that it didn't have enough power drive my esp32 with a display. I had two others that also didn't work. ha! my comment might have been deleted for being too long (spam filter). it had a few suggestions in it, some thank yous. But the reason i cam back now was to remember something else useful, for mobile toolkit: what you can do, is get some mini glue sticks. (and there is maybe the normal translucent type, but also you can find on aliexpress a black color type, that is supposed to have stronger adhesion properties). Andhow... you can get a few little glue sticks + a cigarette lighter. Or something like the... "BIC EZ Reach Lighter", which is just a cool cigarettle lighter that you can use for longer periods (without burning your hands). And i have seen another youtuber, you can just melt the hot glue sticks with the cigarette lighter. And then you do not need to carry around with you any extra glue gun. And it does not even require a power outlet to make use of. That is another good tip. (sorry youtube lost my previous tips, if you get my message i can try to repost my original comment again, it's just a very long and verbose comment, including a few other specific suggestions). Ok, have a nice day
